12oz bottle (best before 05/03/13) poured into a Milkshake Pilsner glass.

Appearance: Initially hazy copper-orange-amber beer with bubbles moving up slowly through the beer. Off-white head about 1/4" thick upon poured died back to a persistent thin head across the top. Plenty of persistent strands of lacing noted. Some of the haze goes away as the beer warms up and the beer gets a bit brighter in appearance.

Smell: Pine, grapefruit, and some other tropical fruit under it all. Not papaya, not mango...I've smelled it but I can't place it. Ripe and inviting tropical fruit smell.

Taste: Well blended flavors here. Smooth hoppiness of front - quick burst of citrus and tropical fruit, then moves smoothly into a malty middle which serves as a counterbalance to the start and finish of this beer. After that, another quick but smooth transition into a longer hoppy piney finish. The flavors are distinct and move quickly one after another, but it's not abrupt. You get the flavor, then it goes away quickly as another one steps in to let you know it's there, and then it goes away again to make for another flavor. Only the finish lingers, but even that finish is not overpowering or dominating on the palate - you'll get the whole combination again with every sip. Or at least I did. Well crafted.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, nicely thick, just south of creamy in regards to thickness. Surprisingly not too sticky on the teeth and not a lot of hop oil all over the place despite how hoppy this beer is. Nicely done.

Overall / Drinkability: Overall a finely crafted DIPA - a good version of the style. Drinkability is quite good as well. Many DIPAs I usually need to stop at one due to the high ABV or the fact that the hops thrashed my palate and I need to stop, this one though, I want another, but I have to work tonight so I'll stop at one. My palate is not worn out by this beer either. The beer went well with food (burger and baked beans) and I'm glad I got a 4 pack. Time to save the rest over a few upcoming evenings. Quite a good DIPA.

Drank from a 12 fl. oz. bottle acquired in a trade with mps
05/15/14
Served in a snifter

The liquid poured a hazy, glowing orange and was topped by a super creamy and foamy, one-finger tall, off-white crown. The head slowly dropped to a bubbly mass. A sheet of drippy lacing coated that glass.

The aroma was hoppy and super fruity. Fairly sweet for the style. Candied orange peel dominated. Peach notes also came through strong. Good amount of juicy tangerine and ruby red grapefruit. All in all, punchy yet quite balanced.

The flavor profile was similar to the nose. Juicy and super fruity. Loads of candied orange peel. Good dose of brown sugar sweetness. The beer was anchored by a stiff, caramel malt backbone that provided almost a bit too much sweetness. Strong peach and apricot notes. Touch of grapefruit. The grapefruit-like pithiness carried into the finish. Some pinesap appeared as well.

The mouthfeel was medium bodied for the style. Creamy, soft and smooth. The liquid contained a fine mellow carbonation that made the beer feel slick on the palate.

Great Lakes Chillwave Double IPA may not be groundbreaking for the style, but it is a really solid and flavorful rendition nevertheless. Fans of more balanced, hoppy beers should definitely seek this one out.

Bottle to Great Lakes Snifter then Speigleau Tulip
12oz

Best by: 5/11/2014

Thanks for the tick Jake & Mike

App- Right out of the bottle this is a deep dark orange with bottom living golds and yellow. Big frothy head with an off creamy white head with some tans. A little bit of spotted cling down the glass. A bit of pond layer head remains.

Smell- This to me is a smaller version of hop slam. Big creamy hops and slightly malty with a backing tropical aroma and ends with a huge amount of honey and some nose tingling phenols.

Taste- This is a big sweet DIPA. I am actually pretty glad this comes in a 12oz bottle. The flavors are a mix of sweet, savory and tropical. The beginning is a sweet honey flavor that coats the tongue. After that is a bit of savory malts and finishes with deeper tropical fruits.

Mouth- A fuller medium body with a medium and dense creamy carbonation. The sweet of the honey lingers and the tropical fruits stick as well. Not at all what I was thinking this beer would be.

Drink- It's good, but wasn't expecting a Hopslam clone just smaller. A nice offering from a good brewery.

I lived in Cleveland for four years in my 20s and probably have more experience with Great Lakes than any other brewery. I've tried all of their regular beers and many of their seasonal beers. I've also been to the brewery twice. This is by far my favorite beer of their's. Usually I find Great Lakes beers too hoppy and bitter. This one is just right though, which is funny considering it's a double IPA. I love the way it looks in the glass. It's just gorgeous. A sort of orangey yellow haze that makes me excited just looking at it. The taste is almost fruity. Tropical fruit. In a good way though. I don't know what else to say. Just try it. I buy it whenever they have it at the grocery store.
