Always excited to try a new beer from Great Lakes, one of my favorite breweries. Poured from a bottle into a Goose Island tulip. Really nice looking pour. Beautiful clear rusty gold color with a touch of haze. Nice fluffy off-white head. The nose is really nice. I get lots of over-ripe tropical fruit and hibiscus flowers. Oranges, grapefruit, lemons, and a good, astringent, piny-sappy smell.
Medium body, firm oily feel, and loads of fruity bitter goodness. Nice biscuity flavors up front, then flavors of orange marmalade, peach preserves, fresh grapefruit, and lemon zest barge in and brighten the flavor. The beer is super fruity and resiny, but doesn't seem all that bitter. It is well-balanced and very fresh tasting and yet never seems to punish your palate. It has a faint flash of a syrupy sweet note on the finish that is very reminiscent of Bell's Hopslam. The alcohol is nowhere to be seen.
What a terrific new beer from Great Lakes. An entry that stands its own with Hopslam and other top shelf seasonal IIPAs. This is definitely one I'll seek out every year. I only bought one 4-pack and I should have bought more. The 4 cases my local store got sold out in only 3 days. Nicely done Great Lakes!
