2014 bottle into a tulip glass. Bright syrupy amber, with a head of tiny bubbles that dissipate quickly.

The aroma is killing me. Clementine and honey, altered by some umami scent (mixed butter and jam?) Caramel. Yum. Wait, I've got it: it's popcorn!

Intriguing anonymous super-fruit flavor, like a peach/navel orange/banana hybrid. Sweet middle. Bitter finish is straight-up pith of lemon.

Medium-bodied, smooth, sticky, and sweet. Sure, the hops rule, but they're nearly shown up by the sweet, bready malt. Finishes medium-dry.

A masterpiece of balance.

I don't know how many people actually surf in Lake Erie as the picture on the bottle and label suggests, but I do believe that this is a very well done DIPA (and my expectations for DIPAs are high).

It pours with very nice lacing and a sizeable head with good retention. The smell is all about tropical fruit and with a touch of alcohol. The taste is bitter but with a touch of sweet malt for balance, and there's lemon and melon in there. The mouthfeel is pretty much spot on, with perfect thickness and carbonation but also some burn from the alcohol and overall astringency.

Overall, this is a very worthy DIPA. I'm not familiar with Mosaic hops, but this is a bold beer, even for a DIPA. It has the bitterness DIPA drinkers look for and enough flavor to appease any beer drinker, along with some sweetness from some good tasting malt that provides a touch of balance just to say that it tried.

12oz bottle best by 5/6/13 poured into a FFF teku today 4/30/13, received as an extra from powz87

Aroma: Smells like tropical fruit and citrus but mostly the tropical fruits like mango accompanied by grapefruit and oranges. So it kind of smells like tropical fruit juice, like spiked Snapple. It also has a resinous, sticky hint to the nose. (4)

Colour: Pours a hazy, dark amber body with a 1cm white head that dissipates fairly quickly into a white collar. Lacing comes in spots, nothing particularly awesome but at the same time, the dark amber body gives it a nectar-ish quality. Not a bad looking beer, certainly more interesting than the average DIPA, but not awesome either. (4)

Flavour: Pretty smooth and tasty. I basically get sweet maltiness up front- toffee and honey are the primary contributors. Then there's a nice bitter juicy component that kicks in- mostly bitter mango and oranges. Pretty interesting balance. (4)

Mouthfeel: Thicker side of medium, feels rather resinous but doesn't dry out my palate. Just OK carbonation. Aftertaste is mostly honey maltiness and a little bit of pineapple bitterness. (4)

Overall: Pretty tasty DIPA, not the best I've had but it's pretty good. I think I need a fresher bottle- although I agree its still a pretty damn good beer. I'll take a few other DIPAs over this but this is a pretty good one on its own. (4)

Re-review: So this year, this beer is known as Chillwave. Not as cool as Alchemy Hour, but still this is a pretty fresh bottle. Enjoy by 5/11/2014. So I'm guessing it was brewed 2/11/2014. Poured into a Bell's snifter today, 2/28/2014.

Appearance is the same; dark copper body, more or less clear with a nice two finger white head with good retention, not a ton of lacing. Smells like passion fruit and pineapple, very intense and pungent. Flavour is nicely balanced, with passion fruit, citrus and pineapple vying against the bread and caramel malts. Really well balanced beer that is a pleasure to drink. Mouthfeel is as good as it needs to be, with just the right bit of carbonation, actually not very bitter for a DIPA, nice and dry with a passion fruity finish. Overall, this is a really nicely done DIPA that needs to be drank fresh. I loved it and for $9.99 a 4-pack, I would buy this any time over a $8.99 bomber of Toppling Goliath Sosus, which is another Mosaic DIPA that hit Madison at the same time I picked this up. Don't get me wrong, that is clearly a superior beer, but until Toppling Goliath starts bottling 4/6 packs, I'm going to choose this one 7 times out of 10.

Great lakes Chillwave

Surfers on Lake Erie ?

Poured into tulip glass

A: Good lookin' brew here. Dull copper color with that subtle glow I like to see from dipa's.

S: Tropical fruit, mango and mosaic hops burst forth the moment I popped the top on this beer. Caramel too maybe ?

T: Delicious ! Hard to not want to drink this one fast because it is just as smooth as it gets. The way the mosaic hops and malts play off eachother in this brew is unlike anyother beer I can think of at the moment.

M: Sticky and a bit prickly. But again, very smooth dipa. Has that silky smooth feel that Hopslam and Hopranch have.

O: Great Lakes has really hit a homerun with Chillwave. One of the best dipa's out there and Ohio continues to turn out excellent ipa's.
