look: 4 | smell: 4.75 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

Poured 12oz bottle drink by 5/18/14 into New Belgium globe

A-Pours a bright, clear, orange color, with small off-white head and some strong lace.

S-The aroma is clean and hoppy, fresh mango, pine/resin, and some grapefruit.

T-The flavor is clean hops, medium sweet and medium bitter, balanced and flavorful

M-The mouthfeel is medium, it has nice carbonation, and a clean, mid-dry finish

O-This is a really nice DIPA. It has fresh and clean flavors, and a well-balanced taste overall. It isn’t the most bitter example of the style out there, but just a really tasty and nicely made example. Really enjoyed this way to go Founders I need to find some more.

Pours a golden amber orange with a thin layer of off-white and bubbly foam.

Juicy tropical fruit, namely mango, pineapple, and some citrus, resin, and some earthy pine notes.

The tropical sweetness in the aroma is slightly overpowered by the resinous, piney, and earthy hop bitterness, but the tropical flavors are not overshadowed, pineapple and mango come out to play with some slight caramel notes.

Medium-bodied, medium carbonation, slightly chewy, tropical tartness, and a fair amount of resinous hop bitterness.

Overall, this will sit in my top 10 favorite DIPAs for some time. This leans heavy on the bitter spectrum, but the tropical tart and sweet flavors shine just enough.

12oz. bottle poured into a snifter

A- A gorgeous, perfectly clear amber-orange. A thing off-white head dissipates quickly.

S- HUGE tropical notes. Tangerine, apricots, mango, passionfruit, pineapple abound. Aroma just jumps from the glass.

T- Sweet hops. Follows the nose, but there's a bit more grapefruit than there is on the nose. A little bit of everything from the realm of hops, mainly tropical, some grapefruit, a hint of earthy notes and pine.

M- A nice medium body, which dries just a bit on the finish.

O- Like Heady Topper and don't have access to it? This will at least scratch the itch for Heady a bit.

Appearance: pours a brilliant orange color with a 1" head that lasts a long time before receding. Spotty lace develops.

Smell: fruity, floral, and earthy tones are all detectable by the nose.

Taste: caramel, orange, grapefruit, big earthy bitterness, and some tropical fruit sweetness. Alcohol is slightly noticeable.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Lightly crisp throughout with some dryness arriving late. Long lasting aftertaste,

Overall: a well balanced DIPA that is nicely refreshing and enjoyable. One of my favorites from GLB.

Pours a brilliant copper color with a half finger of head that dissipates quickly but leaves some lacing behind. The nose is a fine blend of hops and citrus. The malt backbone on this offering is solid – in fact, this is quite a well-balanced DIPA. The finish has bitterness along with a hint of sweet, but it’s not super-hoppy. The biggest drawback is that the alcohol gets just a bit too much at the very end.

On tap:
Orange/amber beer, fairly clear, spotty head.
Nose orange candy (El Dorado-ish), minty greenness.

Nice mandarin orange sweetness, then rind, then grapefruit, all with a caramel sweetness behind it. In the end, pine/mint flavors take over, leaving a very green-leaf dryness on tongue.

Enjoyed more on re-review than initial thought of it being an under 4 beer (but maybe not 3.75 low). Warmth helps a tad, but not too warm on this one.

chillwave double IPA 4pk bottles $8.99(OH) aka known as alchemy hour double IPA.

12 oz brown bottle poured into an etched pint glass. freshest taste date clearly marked, as always.

pours a deep dark copper color. very crisp and clear, a two finger head that left good lacing.

the smell is amazing! i smell a robust outburst of hops. a sweet citrus smell with lots of hoppy action and a subtle pine smell. its telling me come on in and sit down for a while.

the taste is even better. the 9.5 abv is super masked. tastes no stronger than 7.5 abv. a hoppy outburst, followed by a grapefruit citrus taste, finished off very smoothly and with subtle piney souroundings. the after taste is less bitter than any IPA i have ever tasted. (80 IBU's)

mouth feel is rather light. i was not expecting this at all. feels half as thick/heavy as their 7.5 abv commodore perry. still i have no complaints here.

overall this is a great DIPA from the guys at great lakes. A very strong DIPA with moderate IBU's. I always pick up a few four packs when that season comes around. I like the taste of this better than rye of the tiger, but i like the IBU's of the tiger better than chillwave.

Appearance - Dark bronze color. Very clear, poured a two finger head with vigorous pour.

Smell - I'm getting a piney smell then get the smell of Mosaic Hops.. Smells good.

Taste - Taste seems less than what I smelled. Decent beer, but taste just seems to fade away.

Mouthfeel - At 9.4% ABV the alcohol is well hidden which is important to me.

Overall - A good DIPA, but not the best in my opinion. I enjoy Victory Hop Ranch more than this, but would put this ahead of Victory DirtWolf.

Appearance
Copper, clear, 2 cm head when poured, consistent carbonation throughout.

Smell
Sweet, floral and piney/honey

Taste
Hits more towards back of the tongue and roof of mouth, a bit sweeter than balanced.

Mouthfeel
Light, pops a bit I guess…

Overall
Solid beer, not great enough that it would be at the top of my list for a pick when sitting down for a strong double IPA.

A: Amber. Very orange-y. Uuummm. Not very pretty. Like, one of those (what's that birth stone that's that color? Amber? Is it amber?), I dunno that ugly birthstone that is amber color.

S: Grapefruity with some snot.

T: Plain to grapefruit taste. ALL IN ONE SIP! You can really feel it on the outside of your tongue; like a big dong on a Friday night. Like a good once a night beer.

M: Luscious and thick like an Italian man.

O: It won't give you a headache.

Bottle to drinking glass - alls I had.

A. Dark copper color with a finger egg shell head that retreats to a fine bubble rim. Some laces.

S. Nose has strong malt backbone. Hops are prevelant. Minor notes of cat piss, grass, grain, and pine.

T. Strong malt backbone. A noticeable sweetness. The hops come through as sweet pine. Notes of grass, grain, resin, honey, and multi-grain bread.

M. Not very smooth. Thick. Moderate carbonation. Full body.

O. I was a little disappointed. I felt the sweetness actually lended to the lack of smoothness. This ale was overshadowed by other top shelf DIPAs that came out this season. With that said this is a good beer and worth the 10.99 per 4 pack price. I recommend this but I won't keep it around.

A: Beautiful golden copper. Nice off-white that keeps for awhile. Nice lacing

S: Strong Mosaic hop aroma, really pungent almost a like a pleasant skunk to it. love it. Strong tangerine and hints tropical fruits in full force. Some grass. Alcohol is well hidden nicely.

T: Like the aroma good amount of tangerine with hints of pineapple and mango. Light bready and sweet caramel. Bitterness is soft, not even close to being harsh. Alcohol is still hidden.

M: Lightly sweet not not alot. Light to medium body that goes down smoothly. Really nice.

O: I really really love the mosaic hop, aromas and flavors are amazing. This beer is amazing, really easy to drink beer. An easy decision to be a new go to beer, hope to see this around more.

APPEARANCE: Bright, brilliant orange. Wisps, tiny wisps, of foam cover small patches of the surface after the half-inch head falls down. There is not a whole lot of lacing, but a few very small spots cling to the glass throughout.

SMELL: Yummy. This beer is FRESH. Very piney. Some grass and citrus notes sneak in behind the pine to round it out. The smell really whets the palate for this one.

TASTE: Wow. The taste is just as good as the smell. A wonderfully bitter (and quite grassy) backbone is the base for a wide array of hop and malt flavors to dance around on. The hops contribute pine, a touch of lemon zest and a hint of grapefruit, in addition to that nice grassiness. The honey and malt sweeten it to the point of almost making it a dessert beer. There is a lot going on here.

MOUTHFEEL: Sweet, but balanced. The body is medium to full and it has a very pleasant stickiness to it, reminiscent of Oskar Blues Gordon/G'Knight.

OVERALL: I LOVE Hopslam. This is on par with Hopslam.

S: Citrusy hops, hint of pine and lots of sweet smells.
T: Lots of grapefruit blended in with the sweet honey.
M: Very smooth with a bit of carbonation. Very easy drinking beer.
O: Its a good beer. Fruity and sweet IPA. Will happily finish the rest of this 4 pack!

Pours a crystal clear, sunset orange with a nice fluffy head. The head fades, but has not disappeared 10 minutes in. This just plain looks very inviting.

The smell has the usual DIPA suspects, pine, resin, grapefruit, citrus, mango and a deep dank herbal funk that lingers in the shadows. I picked this up as soon as I opened the bottle.

The taste is also the typical DIPA sensations, but slightly tempered. The malt takes some of the sharp edges from the high hop profile. Again citrus, pine and herbs are upfront, malt smoothness on the backside. Not the usual bitter aftertaste of most high ABV DIPA's. Maybe a tad sweet, but I'm not complaining.

The mouthfeel is slick, not as sticky as some of the other hghly rated IPA's. The carbonation is mild and this is very drinkable for the ABV. Beware! The alcohol is well hidden to my pallet.

Great Lakes has a winner with Chillwave. It might not be the best that I've had, but it can run withthe big dogs. I'm saving room in the fridge for more.

Had on-tap at Appalachian Vintner Asheville. Served in a Brooklyn Brewery pint glass.

A- Pours a medium amber color with a 1/2 inch off-white head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a full sheet of bubbly surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a thick ring behind.

S- Oh baby. Super dank grass and citrus rind notes ooze from the glass. Pungent with a slight booze fume.

T- Flavor stands up to the aroma decently with more citrus than earth though. Notes of juicy fruit, grapefruit and even a touch of guava spiciness. Malt works as a good balancer but doesn't have a large presence. Alcohol is insanely well hidden.

M- Tingly, prickly and sharp but at that great middle ground where things aren't too intense. Medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the lighter side.

O- I love it when a beer lives up to its hype. Just about every bit as good as I expected.

On draught at the Lincoln Tap House in Cleveland, appearance is burnt orange with a small off - white collar that leaves thin sheets of foamy lace.

Smell is hoppy pine, moderate intensity.

Taste is resinous, oily hops with a chewy malty back-bone of 2 row. Hoppier than the nose, tempered with an orange candy note.

Moutheel is sticky, slippery, chewy, medium+ body.

Drinkability is ok. To sugary sweet for my taste in the style.

12 oz bottle poured into DFH Signature glass. Best by 5/11/14.

A - Pours a bright amber color with thin whisps of bright-white head. Great clarity. Unimpressive retention leads to disappointing lacing.

S - Juicy grapefruit coupled with rich caramel on the forefront. Citrus and tropical fruits are prominent. Faint wet grains aroma hidden in the background. Very nice.

T - Tangy clementine on the tip of my tongue. Full flavored malts follow with caramel and brown sugar. The citrus flavor is present throughout, but doesn't overwhelm. Bitter hops on the back end with a sugary sweet linger. Tasty.

M - Medium-thick body coats the tongue. Perfectly light but bubbly carbonation. Smooth. Easy drinking.

O - This is one I have been looking to try for a while. We don't get Great Lake in Delaware, so I grabbed a 4-pack on a recent pass through New Jersey. I am glad I did. This is a fantastic double IPA with great balance. Citrus is probably the most prominent flavor, but I enjoy the caramel malts that it also offers. Reminds me most nearly to Evolution Lot6, which is among my favorite beers of all time. This is definitely one I will revisit, if given the opportunity.

A: Nice amber color with a 1 finger bubbly white head. Nice lacing remains after the head dissipates.

S: Powerful hop and floral scent. Very pleasant - strong but not overpowering

T: Taste follows the nose - great hop flavor and floral taste.

M: Really crisp clean mouth feel. Slightly dry at the end - but in a good way.

O: This goes down pretty easily for such a high ABV. There is no boozy taste and it would be easy to drink 2-3

I picked up this case from Breski beverage in Harrisburg enjoyed bottle chilled from a teku.

The color is dark amber bordering on copper with thick creamy head of ecru with fine bead and visibly carbonated. The lace clings well. The smell is mostly citrus fruit with a tropical accent of mango and light dank herbal hop aroma with very light malt sweetness in the nose. The feel is great, very nicely carbonated with medium bitterness that is gentle and ramps up toward the finish with moderatly low alcohol influence, sweetness is present but not excessive.

The taste is great - lots of hop flavor with more of an orange type flavor with mild mango and grapefruit accents. The malt sweetness appears in the taste more toward the end of the glass but really just supports the hops which have a lot more flavor than bitterness and the alcohol is practically non-existant in the taste, there herbal and light pineapple flavors inthe peripheral make this a pretty decent Imperial Ipa to sample in multiples. Overall I would say based on having this side by side with Victory and Goose Island Imperial IPA's as well as DFH it is pretty impressive -very flavorful and not harsh in any way.

poured 12oz bottle into snifter.

A - Clear and bronze with a 2 finger head on an aggressive pour. Nice retention and splotches of lacing around the glass.

S - Aromas of ripe pineapple and passion fruit. Honey covered bread gives it a big sweet scent.

T - The hops are big, juicy, and tropical. Ripe pineapple, passion fruit, with a touch of bitterness. Fresh baked biscuit drenched in honey makes it delicious. I think of it as a sweet, tropical Hopslam.

M - Medium bodied with good carbonation. A slick feel on my tongue.

O - This is a very nice IIPA that is more sweet than hoppy, but don't take that as a negative. The juicy tropical flavors come from the Mosaic hop that is complimented by a sweet honey flavor. Easy to drink considering the ABV.

12oz bottle, Enjoy By 5/11/14,
L - pours copper, topped with an off-white head that fades holds decent retention leaving some chunky lacing on the glass as it dissipates.
S - absolutely huge tropical nose full of tangerine, mandarin, pineapple, and fresh mango. Very sweet smelling with honey, caramel, and biscuit for malt
T - all tropical flavors here: mango, pineapple, mandarin, loads of sweet honey, some bitterness kicks in but it's short lived, as the ale finishes fairly clean. Booze is noticeable and warming but not too hot
F - creamy, smooth, low-to-ample carbonation
O - I like this and it is good, but I wanted to like it more; I like my DIPA's more bitter, more bready, more grapefruity, and more piny. This is really cloyingly sweet and overly tropical. Other than its awesome aroma, it's a disappointment for me.

I was so excited when my beer guy got this in at the store. Having not tried alchemy hour I was thrilled to sample chillwave. THIS ale pours a beautiful clear copper color with a thick white head that gives way to a nice film and lacing. The nose is a very fresh blend of citrus, pine, and tropical fruit. There are a lot of fresh hops here, supported by just enough malt to some what balance this beer. The mouth is medium bodied and coats the palate gloriously. As far as flavor, this one has it going on. It is a total hop bomb with tons of citrus, pine, and grass. There are significant notes of mango, pineapple, and grapefruit. This is way beyond what I expected from a nob west coast ipa. Beautifully bitter and hoppy and so fresh one can almost taste the tap. This is a brewery that I had long ago lost faith in but if they can produce s west coast style ipa like this than maybe I should rethink my opinion.
