Finally found a few 4-packs, and I'm glad I did. Served chilled into an IPA glass.
A: No head, lacing, or retention on this beer. It's a brilliant golden honey color.
S: The aroma is hop forward, with a slight citrus and fruity scent.
T: Sweet, citrusy, and fruity with notes of orange, passion fruit and grapefruit.
M: An effervescent, medium bodied beer that is slightly astringent.
O: One of my new favorite IIPA's, it's like an Imperial Fresh Squeezed IPA from Deschutes. The Mosaic hops and sweet malt profile make this beer extremely drinkable.

Served from a bottle with drink before date of 5/8. I've got six days to drink four beers, better get started with a rare Thursday pour. Into a tulip--a beautiful, golden to amber with some chill haze and a foamy, tan head. Head vanishes instantly, leaving a ring around the glass and some fine lacing and alcohol legs.

Smell is more subtle and malt forward than what I've come to love in a DIPA. Then, apricot, Pine, grass, and alcohol with biscuity malt sweetness. Smells like a very well balanced beer. Time to take a tug.

Taste is outstanding--again, so balanced. Hop bitterness to sweet, honey like malt, and then another hit of grapefruit at the finish to remind you of the style. Such a complex beer. I would say this blows the 2013 model of Hopslam out of the water. I'd love to do a side-by-side.

Mouthfeel is medium. Fizzy at first but mellows quickly. I'm savoring the last quarter-inch in the glass and it is warm, smooth, and delicious. I don't want this to end.

Overall an exceptional beer. Great job, Great Lakes. Love the label and theme, too. Surfing in the Midwest--right on.

I fondly remember Alchemy Hour as one of the best beers I have ever tried, and was eagerly awaiting the release of Chillwave. This year's batch is as great as I remember.

It has a Carmel malt backbone with a light citrus kick and lingering bitterness. The mouthfeel is almost foamy, smooth yet airy.

Have tried it side by side with a few other highly rated DIPAs and IPAs, and this is superior. Has a complexity and drinkability that most others can't compare with.

12 ounce bottle
Served in a tulip glass

A - This beer is orange to amber in color with golden highlights. It is capped with two inches of off-white head.

S - The aroma is amazing. I smell oranges, pineapple, mango, pine, and alcohol.

T - The taste lacks the pineapple, but it does have citrus and tropical fruit flavors. The finish is warming and has the perfect amount of pine.

M - Medium with some biting carbonation.

O - I love this beer. I have bought a dozen or so four packs. Great Lakes = great beer! This is one of my favorite DIPA's. I am sad that it's time is passing for this year.

Wow.

Poured from bottle, nice golden to light copper color, great lacing, short head that dissipates, but light foam remains. Smells awesome, inviting light and sweet. Taste is mango, apricot, light grapefruit, followed but crisp, but not biting piney, Mellow. Not bitter.

Simple put blew me away. I expected good, got great. an absolute must try. Great Lakes puts out some amazing beers, spot on, but this may very well be their finest work to date, and that is saying a lot!. As good as if not better than any DIPA out there, get it, you will be very pleased. Others may have more love and notoriety, but this will stand up against any of them.

Way to go Ohio, you nailed this one!!!

Hazy amber orange with a skein of off white foam and curtains of lace. Powerful pineapple, mango, star fruit and alcohol are noticeable in the nose. Taste does not disappoint. Bouquets of mango, papaya, orange peel, pineapple, substantial malt presence tames, overall bitterness is moderate. Lightly sweet and juicy, chewy well crafted body, perfectly carbonated. Dry medium bitter finish with lingering tropical elements. Very good.

A: An aggressive pour resulted in a two finger head in the snifter. Bright white with mixed soap like bubbles. As it slowly receded a cotton looking lacing was left in its place. The beer is a medium dark copper color with small amount of haze and a constant stream of bubbles climbing to the top.

S: Wow. Large citrus hop aroma. Pineapple is the dominant scent followed by grapefruit and mango. A light graininess from the malt and no detectable ethenol or off characteristics.

T: Great big juicy citrus hop flavor on par with the aroma, pineapple and grapefruit dominate. There is also some pine and berry notes. The bitterness is firm but round and not harsh at all (lots of late hopping I'm guessing). The malt backbone is nice and subtle coming in with a toasty grainy character. Balance is hugely on the hop side. Clean fermentation character, no esters to speak of.

M: A juicy oily sensation left on the tongue like most late hopped IPAs. The carbonation is on the medium to moderate side maybe a tad high coming of a bit bitting. The body is meduim with the hops giving the impression of much more then it probably is.

O: The bottle I had was very fresh and very delish. I've had a lot of GL over the years and they have been solid, but this one blew me away. Big juicy aromatic and a great combination of hop flavors. I would compare it to Head Hunter or even Dirt Wolf with less dank.

A nice clean Double IPA that leaves you wanting more. Nice Hops blend. If you have had the Rock Bottom Double IPA, this hands down beats that brew.

Higher alcohol content so drink with caution.

I had it with meatballs and it was very good.

Probaby good with Steak, cheese plates, or deserts.

On tap

Appearance: Dark amber color with a thin off white head

Smell: Very citrus, pineapple, mango forward. I smell the 9.4% as well

Taste: Huge citrus and pineapple as with the nose. as well as pine notes to balance it out.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, even for a double; Syrupy. I can also pick up some of the abv as expected

Overall: A wonderful DIPA. Full in favor and body. For a true hop head, which i happen to be, you can't ask for much better. I will be reaching for this more often

Delicious, rich, balanced, and just one of the best of its kind.

I'm not usually loving the fruit-forward thing going on the beer world these days. But this one's is not overdone. And the way the flavors grow in complexity over the course of 45 mintues or so is really a special experience. To each his own, of course. The main thing is this one is balanced, rich, creamy, complex, and definitely worth trying.

Poured 12oz bottle drink by 5/18/14 into New Belgium globe

A-Pours a bright, clear, orange color, with small off-white head and some strong lace.

S-The aroma is clean and hoppy, fresh mango, pine/resin, and some grapefruit.

T-The flavor is clean hops, medium sweet and medium bitter, balanced and flavorful

M-The mouthfeel is medium, it has nice carbonation, and a clean, mid-dry finish

O-This is a really nice DIPA. It has fresh and clean flavors, and a well-balanced taste overall. It isn’t the most bitter example of the style out there, but just a really tasty and nicely made example. Really enjoyed this way to go Founders I need to find some more.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Orangish-amber with moderate off-white head and minor lacing.

Smell: Holy tropical goodness! Lots of peach, mango and grapefruit. Aroma is both sweet and dry.

Taste: Fairly sweet upfront, from both the malts and the hops. Layers of tropical fruits, with peach, mango and grapefruit most prominent. Finish is not so sweet, with some spiciness and bitterness. There is also a light berry taste, that I also noticed on New Belgium Rampant I had previous to this. I have heard that Mosaic hops can have a berry-like finish.

Feel: Both full and light bodied at the same time, which I sometimes get from higher alcohol beers with honey. Very smooth. Finish is nicely dry despite the initial sweetness.

Overall: This is an extremely good DIPA that I think is much better than the more boozy tasting and borderline cloying Lake Erie Monster. Actually, this is about the closest beer to Hopslam that I have had, albeit with different hops. Fantastic job, Great Lakes!

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a wine goblet.
Chill-hazed apricot in color, with a short-but-sturdy cap of off-white foam.
Aroma-Aromatic boquet of wildflower honey and bold juicy hops. Close your eyes and winter disappears for a brief, fragrant moment.
Taste-Honeyed, toasted malt, brown- sugared tangerine, with juicy, tropical hops providing a snaking, underlying bitterness that weaves nicely between all the flavors. Very smooth for the high ABV. A hophead's tasty treat. Excellent.

Serving type: 12 oz. Bottle poured into spiegelau tulip. Bottle courtesy of fritts211.

Appearance: Pours a darker shade of orange with half-inch head.

Smell: Mostly aromas of citrus - specifically heavy orange/tangerine smell.

Taste: Follows the smell with almost no bitterness from the hops. Malts balance the hops perfectly. Almost no hint of the 9.4% abv.

Mouthfeel: Overall good mouthfeel but could be improved by a bit more carbonation.

Overall: Fantastic imperial IPA that is not just for hopheads. I am fairly new to IPAs but this is definitely one I would seek out again.

Best before 04/30/13. Poured in to tulip.

A - Golden orange; translucent. Half a finger of cream coloured head.

S - Peach, tangerine, mango and passion fruit hop bouquet. Some sweet honey provides a good balance. The bitterness does not appear to be overly assertive for the style.

T - Well balanced. Moderate bitterness for the style accompanies peach, tangerine, mango, passion fruit, peach and pineapple flavours. A fairly prominent honey malt sweetness.

M - Medium body. Creamy. Sticky hop oils.

O - This was an excellent beer. Would love to try this more fresh but this was great nonetheless. The mosaic hops add a great flavour profile to this.

Acquired as an extra in a trade. This was close to its "best by" date when I got it, so I let it settle in the fridge for a few days to combat the shipping trauma, then enjoyed.

A - Pours a darkish, copper orange, with a beautiful chunky white head about two-fingers. Good lacing. Absolutely beautiful appearance really.

S - Hops come on strong, with citrusy freshness coming on too. Sweetness of the malts is apparent, along with some earthy quality to it.

T - Nice resiny hop taste to it, also some definite orange in there with some other citrus. Sweetness from malts balances it all out nicely.

M - Medium bodied, great resiny aftertaste. Fairly smooth, but also has a bit of a bite.

O - Great DIPA, overall superb. Would love to get some freshies and re-review.

12oz. bottle poured into a snifter

A- A gorgeous, perfectly clear amber-orange. A thing off-white head dissipates quickly.

S- HUGE tropical notes. Tangerine, apricots, mango, passionfruit, pineapple abound. Aroma just jumps from the glass.

T- Sweet hops. Follows the nose, but there's a bit more grapefruit than there is on the nose. A little bit of everything from the realm of hops, mainly tropical, some grapefruit, a hint of earthy notes and pine.

M- A nice medium body, which dries just a bit on the finish.

O- Like Heady Topper and don't have access to it? This will at least scratch the itch for Heady a bit.

Crystal clear copper hue with a nice sticky finger and half tall white head. Lots of papaya and mango on the nose along with other tropical fruits, smells great. Incredibly incredibly smooth. Sweet tropical fruits , a bit of pine and grassiness, some sweet caramel and and sweet breads beneath it all, well blended flavors , balanced but overall sweet with bitterness just keeping things in check with a touch of alcohol heat. I lived in Cleveland for four years in my 20s and probably have more experience with Great Lakes than any other brewery. I've tried all of their regular beers and many of their seasonal beers. I've also been to the brewery twice. This is by far my favorite beer of their's. Usually I find Great Lakes beers too hoppy and bitter. This one is just right though, which is funny considering it's a double IPA. I love the way it looks in the glass. It's just gorgeous. A sort of orangey yellow haze that makes me excited just looking at it. The taste is almost fruity. Tropical fruit. In a good way though. I don't know what else to say. Just try it. I buy it whenever they have it at the grocery store.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle to a snifter glass 5/25 enjoy by date

A- pours a deep burnt orange, with a 1/4 head, that thins to a lace with some visible carbonation

S- Oranges, mangos, pineapples, grapefruit , tons of citrus, loads of heavy floral scents packed mid sniff, a touch of pine and grapefruit skin on the end

T- Pungent orange and grapefruit right up front, again very floral mid sip, heat from the alcohol can be found also but not overly aggressive, finishes very very bitter.

M- Full bodied, medium carbonation, soft and juicy in the mouth, leaves the tounge dry and wanting more and the palate destroyed from bitterness

O- Really good DIPA from GLBC, this beer took me by suprise, huge citrus notes, huge floral notes, just all around classic DIPA every thing fits just right.

Pours a darker orange color with a minimal head that dissipates right away and leaves a thin ring of lacing. Smells of tons of peaches, light juicy orange, mango, maybe some papaya or guava, stonefruit, along with some carmel from the malt, and light honey. Somewhat dry aroma. Taste starts with lots of sweet, juicy fruits. Peach, mango, papaya, and some grapefruit. Sweetness from the honey shows through already. The middle brings more honey sweetness as well as some carmel malts that really balance the fruity hops. Starting to get the resinous bitterness from the nugget hops. The finish a wonderful combination of fruity hops, sweetness, and slight bitterness. Lots of juicy peach, mango, some tangerine, papaya, stonefruit, little grapefruit peel, honey, and carmel. Slightly dry and bitter, but the sweetness cuts the dryness and bitterness wonderfully. Full body with a creamy and oily mouthfeel. The mosaic hop never disappoints, and the nugget hops provide a nice resinous bitterness to contrast the fruity qualities of the mosaic hops. Hoppy, yet very balanced and the flavors the hops bring are pretty complex. One of the best showcases of mosaic hops I've had. Excellent double ipa.

12oz bottle in Sam Adams glass
best by 5/2/13

A: Crystal clear dark gold color with a slightly off-white head that leaves a surprising amount of lace.
S: Tropical fruits with an underlying malt sweetness
T: A distinct malt sweetness combined with a mix of tropical fruits and a little bit of pine, as it warms I get a hint of orange or tangerine. There is a distinct hops sharpness at the end, but it is well mixed with the malts. A honey-like flavor that I assume is from the honey malt mentioned on the label.
M: Very crisp, slightly round and creamy with the hops leaving a residual dryness on the tongue.
O: Holy crap this is a great beer. This may rival Hopslam for the DIPA crown! An excellent combination of hops and malt, so much more than "hoppy" like the average DIPA. I just looked at the GLBC website and it appears this beer will be back next year.

Poured into my Maui/Jolly Pumpkin Sobrehumano snifter.

Appearance- Robust orange color, not too bright, but strong. Like an overripe orange in the bowl. Lots of bubbly head leaves a lot of lacing.

Smell- straightforward double IPA- big, pungent, bitter and acidic. Tingly on the nose with lots of pineapple, guava, fig newtons, alpha acids. Smells like its gonna be yummy.

Taste- big passion fruit creamy tang up front. Robust bitter hop attack comes next and hangs out past the swallow. Mingles nicely with a malty backdrop, but keeps the bitter long and strong. Very tasty stuff. A great DIPA for warm weather.

Mouthfeel- slightly fizzy, but dense and smooth. Leaves the mouth coated for lingering taste.

Overall- one of Great Lakes' best offerings in my opinion. Bummer that it is a limited seasonal. They should keep this on a bit longer into the summer months. And if Widmer actually sued over the name, it will be a bummer that this will be gone- hopefully the recipe stays and the only the name changes. Can't wait until the next release of this one
