Poured Chillwave Double IPA into a Belgian Tulip.

A - Pours a clear dark golden with a finger of eggshell white head.

S - Tropical paradise, with mango, grapefruit, pineapple, a little coconut.

T - Wow, the brew is exactly like the aroma. Again, tropical paradise with mango, some honeydew melon, grapefruit, pineapple. The hops comes through mid palate with some bitterness and pine. On the aftertaste getting more grapefruit with sweet melon flavors. Too good to be true.

M - Just about perfect. Medium carbonation, with medium leaning towards a heavy on the mouthfeel.

O - This is now my favorite DIPA. I love Stone's IPA's; however, Great Lakes does a fabulous job on this brew. Highly Recommended ! Cheers!

Wow. Awesome beer...
pours a nice amber with a finger and a half off white head. Amazing smell, like canned peaches. Fresh fruit flavors follow in the taste with a nice bitterness. This beer is just about perfect imo and hangs with two of my other faves, dirtwolf and lagunitas sucks. Buy this!

Serving type: 12 oz. bottle. Best by date 5/20/14. As Great Lakes gives this beer a 90 day shelf life, the bottles I've had were a bit over a month old.

A: Poured a beautiful orange-copper, with a slightly off-white finger and a half head that quickly dissapated to a dense white crust.

S: Overwhelmingly citrus, with a hint of honey, fruit, pine and grass. Very pleasant and complex.

T: At first, I tasted the grapefruit and slight hint of pineapple up front, but subsequent sips showed grapefruit but quickly morphed into a intense mango and pineapple note. As it warmed, I also detected mango in the aroma. Despite its 80 IBU rating, the hops were very nicely balanced with a caramel and honey note from the hops. A slighty piney and bitter finish on the tongue, but very pleasantly so.

M: Slightly syrupy, creamy and smooth. Given the IBUs, not as dry as I would have expected.

Overall, this is my first encounter with Chillwave, but it won't be my last. I'm a guy that likes some type of balance in my IPAs. This one has it all. Even after one 4-pack, I would catapult it right up there with my other favorited DIPAs: Dogfish Head 90 Minute, O'SO Lupilin Maximus, Lagunitas Maximus and Hopslam. This is the first Great Lakes offering I've sampled, but won't be my last. This is an excellent example of the style.

Bright copper orange in color with good clarity. Poured with a dense white foam that quickly reduced to a wispy cap. Aroma was a well balanced blend of caramel malt, grapefruit, and ripe pineapple with pine notes at the end. Medium bodied with slightly oily feel beneath pleasantly robust, rich carbonation. A maltier, fuller bodied feel than expected for a higher octane DIPA. Grapefruit and ripe pineapple hop flavors over a sturdy caramel malt backbone. Minty hop flavor near the end with a musty, citrus hop aftertaste. Booziness is there but is superbly masked by the aromas and flavors.

Pours out a gorgeous deep clear amber with a nice big creamy white head. The head has moderate retention but a nice collar, leaving nice lacing. The aroma is big citrus hops (grapefruit ntoes) and a subtle hint of caramel malts. The flavor is good but a little one-dimensional when compared to the aroma, with the hops dominating and little depth from the malt. The mouthfeel is thinner than I'd like for a DIPA, but all in all, this is still a very good beer.

Best by 5/11/14 at 45 degrees into imperial pint
Aroma is very pleasant citrus
Head average (4.5 cm), off-white, creamy with large rocks, rapidly diminishing to a 1 mm layer with lumps
Lacing spotty – clots here and there
Body bright orange, clear
Flavor begins with some hops citrus, but not a lot. No malt, no alcohol, no diacetyl. Flavor ends with some pink/red grapefruit sourness, very short lived.
Palate medium, somewhat oily, carbonation lively.

A very nice DIPA – no flavor of alcohol – just a slow burn after it hits the stomach. The appearance and aroma are very pleasing although I like a little more lacing. The flavor seems muted to me, with the citrus being more pronounced in aroma, and just the grapefruit bitterness showing up a minute or two after swallowing. Overall, another good beer from Great Lakes in Cleveland.

Poured from 12oz. bottle into tulip.

Overall a nice double IPA. I've had it before and remember it being mud more flavorful, full or citrus and pine notes. However this bottle has too much alcohol in the nose, only slightly dissipating in the taste. Tends to overwhelm everything else. Still worth trying, though, since this brewery makes really great brews.

Doing a taste test of this Chillwave Double Ipa vs. Victory DirtWolf Double Ipa.
date of 05/05/14 on the label using a Chimay goblet.

A- Pours a nice dark burnt orange-copper color with a nice off-white two finger lacing which settles nicely into swirls of white on the top.

S- Has a really nice peach/mango/pine smell that is incredibly inviting, can't wait for the taste.

T- Not overpowering but definately very palatible, mellow bite for a 9.4 percent ipa, pleasant but not the best out there. It is damn good but I might be leaning towards the other dipa I'm trying at the same time. This one may have a little age on it compared to the Victory Dipa I am trying though.

M- Again, not terribly bright feel, more of a slow, mellow taste with a great smell that washes over really smoothly, Great Lakes knows how to make a great beer!

O- A really outstanding Dipa, not the best I've had but right up there, probably top 10, there are just so many good ones now...and so little time!

Bottle poured into an IPA glass

A - Pours a clear copper color with a big white head. Light carbonation. Nice lacing on the glass. Legs fall quickly.

S - Orangey citrus, grapefruit, a touch of dankness, and a hint of malt backbone.

T - Grapefruit and orange up front. A small touch of dankness. Really enjoyable.

M - Prickly on the tongue. Finishes dry. Very light bitterness. No trace of alcohol.

O - A very good citrus-forward west coast style IPA. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

A: An aggressive pour resulted in a two finger head in the snifter. Bright white with mixed soap like bubbles. As it slowly receded a cotton looking lacing was left in its place. The beer is a medium dark copper color with small amount of haze and a constant stream of bubbles climbing to the top.

S: Wow. Large citrus hop aroma. Pineapple is the dominant scent followed by grapefruit and mango. A light graininess from the malt and no detectable ethenol or off characteristics.

T: Great big juicy citrus hop flavor on par with the aroma, pineapple and grapefruit dominate. There is also some pine and berry notes. The bitterness is firm but round and not harsh at all (lots of late hopping I'm guessing). The malt backbone is nice and subtle coming in with a toasty grainy character. Balance is hugely on the hop side. Clean fermentation character, no esters to speak of.

M: A juicy oily sensation left on the tongue like most late hopped IPAs. The carbonation is on the medium to moderate side maybe a tad high coming of a bit bitting. The body is meduim with the hops giving the impression of much more then it probably is.

O: The bottle I had was very fresh and very delish. I've had a lot of GL over the years and they have been solid, but this one blew me away. Big juicy aromatic and a great combination of hop flavors. I would compare it to Head Hunter or even Dirt Wolf with less dank.

Bottle pour from recent batch nice fluffy white head solid good lacing and well carbonated. Nose is sweet malt, mango, alcohol and a touch of resin. Taste is vegetal, bready and boozy. The strength of the beer overshadows the hop profile which is a shame. Mouthfeel is great for a DIPA with great bubbly medium-high mouth coating. On the whole I am continuously let down by this one. I had it when it was released under another name and a few bottles of this year's and think the flavor is just a disappointment. I would not grab this on tap even if it was same day fresh.

Best by May 8, 2014; poured into tulip.

A: Pours a nice-looking deep, amber-orange color. Thin off-white head dissipates quickly.

S: Big tropical fruit hop aroma, particularly pineapple, that's fleshed out by resinous and earthy flavors.

T: Huge citrus hop flavors here, lots of grapefruit and tangerine alongside the pineapple that was so strong in the smell. Well balanced with a pleasant lingering bitter tone. Decently strong alcohol flavor, though it works with the hops.

M: Medium-bodied, smooth and very creamy. Really dry finish.

O: Solid DIPA from Great Lakes; well worth picking up.

Drank this our of a tulip
Look - copper color and you can see right through it. Good head that lasted for less than 30 sec
Smell - best smelling dipa I can think of. The hop and citrus aroma is incredible.
Taste - just like the smell but slightly hopier. Has a great grapefruit mango citrus taste. More mango than anything else and it sits in your mouth for a while.
Mouthfell - slight carbonation thick for how clear it is but fairly smooth.
Overall - one of the best Great Lake beers if not my favorite. I hope to find this in tap somewhere!

Pours a semi-opaque hazy copper with a touch of fluff gracing the surface. The aroma is wonderful: juicy fruits, powerful hops, almost a buttery note lurking in the depths. Not a trace of the ABV. Taste follows the nose: bright hops, grapefruit and mango, and a wonderfully sweet yet subtle malt backbone. An excellent brew, and one I'll keep an eye out for in the future.

Pours a golden amber with a thick, off-white head that dissipates slowly. Decent lacing. Lots of tropical fruit and citrus on the nose followed by pine resin and flowery notes. Lots of pineapple, grapefruit, mango, tangerine and orange on the tongue. The pine resin and earthy hops are not as apparent, but they balance out what is almost a too sweet beer from the malt profile. Full bodied with good carbonation. Overall, this is almost perfect DIPA, only the too-sweet finish keep it from the pinnacle!

Pours a clear dark orange with minimal/visible carbonation. A small off white head sat atop but quickly dissipated. The aroma is earthiness, pine and resin with some citrus fruit undertones. 12 oz. bottle poured into a Founders snifter.

Appearance: Pours a hazy amber-hued orange color with a half-inch white head.

Smell: Impressive. Bursting with citrus and tropical hops - tangerine, mango, papaya. No alcohol in the nose. Love it.

Taste: Very similar to the smell - big on the tangerine and tropical fruit hops along with some grapefruit. A tiny bit of caramel malt sneaks in to give some balance on the finish, but this is all about the hops. No real alcohol heat and a nice bittering hop presence on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Crisp and pretty dry, although the tropical fruit hop flavors do give a mild perceived sweetness. Medium-high carbonation. Bittering hops dry out the palate on the finish.

Overall: Great Lakes normally kills it and this is one of their best in my opinion. Phenomenal DIPA.

Appearance: Copper with a small amount of carbonation. Virtually no head at all.

Smell: Very tropical and hoppy with pine notes. Smells... serious. Like it's not hiding anything at all.

Taste: Big, bold IPA flavors abound here, with a bit more sweetness than what you'd find in your typical double IPA. It's different, and here, different is good!

Mouthfeel: Crisp, clear. No alcohol burn to report. Slight stickiness, strangely enough.

Overall: I'm glad I got a 4 pack of this before the liquor store ran out...!

Crystal clear copper hue with a nice sticky finger and half tall white head. Lots of papaya and mango on the nose along with other tropical fruits, smells great. Incredibly incredibly smooth. Finally found a few 4-packs, and I'm glad I did. Served chilled into an IPA glass.
A: No head, lacing, or retention on this beer. It's a brilliant golden honey color.
S: The aroma is hop forward, with a slight citrus and fruity scent.
T: Sweet, citrusy, and fruity with notes of orange, passion fruit and grapefruit.
M: An effervescent, medium bodied beer that is slightly astringent.
O: One of my new favorite IIPA's, it's like an Imperial Fresh Squeezed IPA from Deschutes. The Mosaic hops and sweet malt profile make this beer extremely drinkable.

A - Pours a delightful clear amber color with a small white head. Bubbles, bubbles everywhere.

S - Sweet citrus and predominately grapefruit smell. This is combined with moderately a sour smell and hits of hops.

T - A dominating sour citrus taste with a strong grapefruit presence. The IPA bitterness is present, but not overbearing. There is also a very pleasant sweetness to the taste.

M - Very smooth, crisp, and refreshing. The thickness seems medium to light. The alcohol burn is very mild.

O - Probably my favorite IPA, but I do not have much experience with Double IPAs. It is sweet and refreshing and not overly bitter, especially for an IPA. I could see enjoying this beer on a warm spring day, on a beach, or in a tropical location. Although, it is still enjoyable during in this winter that will never end.

pours a slightly hazy light amber with a quarter finger of head that left right away.

Smell is a lot of tropical notes from the mosaic, sweet honey, maybe some honeydew melon, grapefruit, pine, some minor berry notes, caramel malt

taste is bitter up front, heavy tropical notes of mango, papaya, orange, pineapple, some grapefruit and pine kicks in towards the end, a definite sweet malt base here with notes of caramel, honey, bread and biscuit.

Mouthfeel is full and sticky with medium light carbonation, dry an sweet on the finish.

Well this is a damn good beer, I really enjoyed this on, I will probably go through a few 4 packs of this while it is around!
