12 oz bottle served in a Libby globe porter glass. Best by 08/31/13.
Appearance: Deep bright copper color. Thick white head upon pouring slowly died back. First sips give plenty of lacing - thick walls and delicate strands in some places. Bubbles moving up very very slowly through the glass when held up to the light. Great looking beer.
Smell: Loads of aromatic hops. Grapefruit citrus, pine, pineapple, fresh cut tropical fruit, and another smell which I can best describe as a fresh mint family plant pulled or cut in the garden. Wonderful smelling beer.
Taste: Lots of flavors going on here. Quick hop flavors at the beginning of the sip - citrus, tropical fruit, floral. In the middle you get the malt sweetness. It goes fast to complement the hops at the beginning. Maybe a bit biscuity but it goes so fast its hard to sort it out exactly. The finish is bitter, but not strongly bitter. Citrus tart bitter, with a hint of pine. All of these flavors blend together in quick succession - 1, 2, 3 and then it's gone. The most is some lingering hop bitterness at the end. A well balanced and very flavorful beer.
Mouthfeel: Carbonation comes out late in the swallow on the tongue. Some stickiness on the teeth from the hop oils. Above average.
Overall / Drinkability: Hmmm....the hop profile of this beer is all American IPA or even DIPA, and if the bottle didn't say Lager I doubt I would have known it was a lager. But, much like a lager, the hop flavors and malts are crisp in this beer. So perhaps there is a lager to all of this. In a way, it's probably rather amazing that the hop aromas survived a lagering process and the aromatic hop molecules didn't just wander out of the beer. So maybe it really is a India Pale Ale / Lager crossover. Regardless of the proposed style, this is one well done beer. I've had two now completely by themselves without food, and this beer stands alone really well. Further, it's a very drinkable beer. In both separate occasions, I found myself wanting to pour another one. Maybe tonight I will....
A very good beer. Here's to another 25 year Great Lakes!

A- Rich copper in color and clear. A one finger head reduces quickly to leave a light halo.
S- Sweet malts, tropical fruity hops. Smells great!
T- Strong sweet bready malts come on first with a hoppy kick in the middle. A dry peppery hop aftertaste lingers on.
M- Lighter than medium bodied. Nothing crazy or unexpected. Goes down smooth.
O- A great tasting IPL. Easy to drink with a huge helping of hop bitterness.
