Visited 10/30/05

I've been visiting GLBC every autumn for the last three years, it's about time I give them their props. Last visited 10/29/05.

The atmosphere is damn cool. Real wood (mahogany?) original bar from 1901. The bartender let me walk behind the bar (after closing) and showed me 2 bullet holes from way back when. Tin pressed ceiling tiles, real wood paneled walls (going half-way up) with real cool old fashioned looking wallpaper to even it all out. Dark & cozy with a beautiful frontage from Market Street. I could go on and on, definitely the real McCoy of an old style, old world pub. The dining area is very much the same style as the pub of which I'm speaking. The gift shop has this very old real wood compartmental refrigerator where each 24" x 24" door showcases it's own separate beer - very nice. The poster selection was very cool, one for each beer label. Shirts, glass pitchers, glasses galore, yada, yada, yada.

Quality is top notch. Fresh, consistent and flavorful - doesn't get any better.

Selection is good. Nosferatu, Christmas Ale and Cleveland Brown Ale were the pubs showcase beers that night along with their original 6 (check their website). I was bummed they didn't have their Pumpkin Ale on tap, it had been brewed but not available for another week. We were informed they just ran out of their Rackhouse Ale (aged in bourbon barrels) - bummer.

Food is off-the-hook. A sausage sampler platter to die for. Bread pudding was the best I've ever had. Fish & Chips were stellar. Edmund Fitzgerald Chocolate Chunk ice cream paired with a fresh pint of the same, heaven. Spectacular in every sense.

Good value, but maybe I'm biased because I drive 8 hrs. round trip just to belly-up, stay in an affordable hotel and take off back to Michigan the next morning. Worth every cent.

I love the downstairs "dungeon" style set-up, lots of brick and wood. Solid beers available, but not much beyond their year round offerings, wish they had a little more. I didn't have any food so unfortunately can't rate anything there.

Almost always busy, but they have a unique selection of foods on their menu and have a few brews that are only available on tap at the bars (one in the basement, main level, and top level). Staff is friendly and willing to let you try samples if you ask politely and they're not swamped. Parking can be hit or miss but it's not too bad, and is nice that it's located across from the West Side Market so you can wander around after your meal and check out all the fruit, bakery and meats (some of which is used at the GLBC restaurant).

15 years ago I loved their beers but they have really gone downhill. The beers are shells of their former selves. Especially Edmund fitzgerald and Christmas ale. Not sure if they have changed recipes or brewmasters. I got the strip steak and it came with POWDERED mash potatoes. Big letdown.

Vibe:My folks and I were in town for the night as we were on our way to the Football HOF induction ceremony. The place was packed on a Friday afternoon. Outdoor patio seating looked cool. Up stairs and downstairs bars looked a bit cramped. We ended up at a table downstairs as it was the only room really available. The people seemed pretty cool and there were a few other out-of-towners.

Quality: The beers were really nice. Only had a couple duds that fell flat to me. We were lucky that they still had some of the Christmas Ale left over from the Christmas in July thingy they did. The Oktoberfest, Lake Erie Monster, and the Clevelander Weisse really stood out to me, with the last two really making a strong case for my favorites.

Service: was prompt and friendly. Pretty dang extraordinary for how packed it was in there.

Selection: I was pretty psyched for all 11 different beers they had on tap. They had a beer for everybody. Some safe picks like the Dortmunder and Eliot Ness Amber and some more challenging beers like the Clevelander Weisse and the Moondog ESB.

Food was pretty kick ass. Had a perfectly cooked burger and the grilled cheese is to die for. Though, my father is doing this whole pseudo-vegetarian thing to keep his gout at bay and the beet salad didn't do it for him.

I really enjoyed myself here and love that you can get a 5 oz sampler of all 11 beers for like $16. If I hadn't just gone from a mile up in elevation to about 650 above sea level I might have gotten a little drunk even. I will definitely return next time I am in Cleveland.
