American Black Ale |  6.30% ABV

Notes/Commercial Description:
A thoughtful congruence of flavour & attitude, this Black IPA was made with a lager yeast… Brewed with superior malted barley from our neighbors to the north. The kettle hops are Citra & Columbus & then dry hopped with Amarillo. Don’t let the colour deceive you, for the black as night appearance is devoid of any harsh roast bitterness.

Had a pint ($4.00) of this 82 IBU offering on 06APR12 while visiting with Alewife...

It was a deep, dark brown, nearly black actually. Had a creamy tan head, foamy and fine, lasting fairly well, and left good lace behind. Aroma was of rindy citrus with hints of roastiness; I found it appealing. It was quite smooth on the tongue, with some good heft to te body.

It had some light sweetness at first, followed by roasty notes and a bit of chocolate. A healthy whack of citrus was close behind, with some pithy character; the Amarillo was solid here. Somewhat unclear on the concept of "Black India Lager"... Is this a black IPA but using lager yeast and cold fermented? Unsure, but anyhow it was a tasty start to the proceedings at the Bobcat...

Prosit!

On tap poured into a pint glass.

Pours a very dark black with a small dark brown head. Nose is mellow, a bit chocolaty and lightly hoppy.

Taste is sweet - I'm thinking maple syrup! There's some chocolate, lots of fresh hops, and the maple finish, it's really good! I've never heard of a "Black India Lager" for all I know Mark is the first to ever brew it, and it's awesome!

Reviewed from notes.

Pours a very dark brown color with a thin tan head that sits around for a bit before falling into a collar. Not too much lace. The nose carries a fair amount of roasted malt plus a bit of piney hops. Hops take a backseat to the roast. The flavor is along the same lines. Nothing too complex or crazy, but within style. I would prefer the pine to punch through the roast backbone, though that doesn’t really happen. Pretty decent feel with a good 1-2 combo of roast and hop bitterness. Worth a try.

This was a deep brown pour that filled the glass, so no head report. No lacing occured as beer wa consumed.

Pretty light on the aroma, I got primarily roast frangrance and no hop.

The taste was almost that of a hoppy porter. There was the right amount of malt to balance the hop.

The mouthfeel was spot on, a little body, light carbonation.

I must admit for an unknown style in my book, I would like to see more of these.
