Brew Free or Die (aka 21st Amendment IPA) smells fresh and citrusy straight from the can, bubbling up in a frenzy of grapefruit-bitter hops, orange, apricot, lemon, and lime. Only a good whiff of caramelized brown sugars belies the presence of malt; this brew is obviously biased in favor of hops.
On the tongue, the hops continue to dominate, coming across strong, but finely nuanced, so that the various bitter flavors from the six different hops meld together and provide a broad-spectrum whang, rather than the needle-point jab that IPAs brewed with only one kind of hops provide. From the malts, strong citrus flavors help balance the bitterness, bring in oranges and apricots, as well as caramelized brown sugars, toasted pecans, and hints of toasted rice. The aftertaste is largely hops, with some toasted pecan notes. Mouthfeel is medium-light, and carbonation is medium.
Overall, this is a good IPA--far better straight from the can than many are from the bottle. Well worth a try.
