On-tap at 21A

A: The pour is a slightly cloudy pale golden straw color with a fluffy white head.

S: A bit of corn on the nose which isn't really surprising, but after that, some nice bread notes take over. Some spicy and floral hop aromas. There's also a slight earthy note.

T: Good cracker and biscuit flavor in terms of the malt character, along with a mild apple juice sweetness. A pretty good hop flavor provides a bit of floral, earthy, and spicy complexity.

M: The body is fairly light, maybe approaching medium, with a medium level of carbonation.

D: Normally I'm not a big blonde ale fan, but this was quite nice. Had some nice kolsch and pilsner qualities to it.

Taken at the brewpub on 5 Feb 2013 during 'Strong Beer Month'.

The light golden beer had a slight haze within the body and a thin white head.

The nose was of floral hops and some grain notes: the taste was also hop dominated with only hints of maltiness if you searched for them.

Refreshing enough but no great flavours to get excited about.

The South Park Blonde was served in a standard pint glass. It is bright gold with an off white head.

The nose is of grains, a bit of citrus and apple.

The taste is crisp with moderate hoping. The grains are in the forefront and add a bready taste. Bit of plum late.

The mouth is sharp with good carbonation. This meets the cross-over criteria of a blonde.

It is served with a golden color and a thin head that quickly dissipates to a single island of bubbles. Not much nose on this beer but a little malt can be detected. The flavor is a milky-maltiness, a bit bready, but no hops. A slight sweet yeast flavor is detectable as well. The flavor leaves a lot to be desired as it has very little to offer.

The body on the beer is very light. It is soft on the palate and goes down without much notice.

Light yellow pour, with basically no head on draft at 21st Amendment. Smell is of mild malt and little else. Very tame, uninteresting nose. Taste is of light hop bitterness up front followed by an uninspired pale malt finish. Easy drinking average blonde overall.

Poured a rustic straw in color beneath a very whispy, off-white sheet. Little patches of condensed lacing.

Weak toasted malt aroma; slight biscuit nose. A very musty and earthy wheat profile; adjunctory grains.

A metallic-caramel flavor adding to an airy biscuit flavor. Astringent wheat character that leads to a dirty, earthen bitterness followed by an adjunctory-filled corn and rice aftertaste.

Light bodied; grainy, yet airy on the palate.

A disappointing blonde; the malt profile is off and the wheat profile is near offensive. Off-flavored and slightly out of balance leads to average drinkability at best.

Good stick to the foam that seemed to peel up onto the edges of the glass from the layer of haze covering the clear dark gold body. Very clear, and served very cold, which combined with the somewhat heavy carbonation, made drinking this take awhile. Hard to detect anything too interesting from the nose other than some spots of hops.

Not too much as far as taste in the mouth either, and anything that is there is overwhelmed by the medium sharp carbonation, which hits the mouth and is instantly double-teamed by distinctly bitter hops felt in the back of the mouth and throat. Very nice mouthfeel here. A sold, toasty biscuit grain taste comes across as well.

A little watery, perhaps for those who step into the 21 A looking for a macro. That said, not a bad beer, although the others available are superior. Very fresh.

On-tap at 21st Amendment, in San Francisco.

'South Park' refers to an actual park adjacent to the brewpub, not the Comedy Central cartoon, but you might just as well recognize this beer from television: as if made explicitly to be in a commercial, it's got that pristinely clear but frosty complexion, shimmering golden colour and fine powdering of snow white head. What a star.

When you’re brewing in large quantities - as is needed, I'm sure, for this very popular beer - the actual amount of hops thrown in the brew kettle must be pretty huge. But in relative terms, for a blonde ale, how much they really need for it to show is little and indeed this simple smell is that of bready, grainy malts. It's not exciting by any means, but clean.

A beer this basic and light-bodied that *doesn't* have any fouling adjunct taste must be an epiphany to Coors and Budweiser drinkers. It's a shame that I even feel the need to bring up those names because South Park Blonde, while ordinary and plain, is sure to be enjoyed not only by a mainstream crowd, but anyone who appreciates a good quaff.

Indeed, depth is just one attribute a beer can have, and it’s not always the most important one either (far from it when it comes to blonde lagers and ales). Plain beers are meritable too. The wholesome ingredients that went into this one make for something that tastes like a pilsner, but lighter and with no bitterness, and provide a clean, bready aftertaste.

South Park Blonde is catered to the baseball crowd that pack the brewpub before and after every Giants game. They love it - and why wouldn't they? It's an incredibly agreeable and pure beer, perfectly suited to most peoples' tastes. If you like bolder beers such as IPAs then you've ordered the wrong thing - lucky for you this brewpub has plenty of those offerings too!

This blonde ale is a nice pale gold. There's a nice mild bready/oatmeal aroma. The flavor profile is very neutral with a mild maltiness towards the end. Bitterness is low but sufficient. High carbonation. Light to medium bodied.

Overall: drinkable and clean. a little boring but that's the style. Good beer to convert BMC drinkers.
