I had this on tap at the brewery in San Francisco, CA. It's a 9.5% ABV imperial porter brewed for Strong Beer Month (February). It was served in a snifter and had a deep black color, long-lasting bubbly, not creamy head, lots of lacing. It had a strong roasty aroma, good complex taste with coffee/chocolate malt tones, a little bite of alcohol in the aftertaste, but considering it’s a 9.5% porter it’s well hidden. Strong beer month is a brilliant idea.

Smell: Smokiness is abundant but has a light and gentle character and is quite reminiscent of smoked ham. Some apple and apple cider notes come through to add a little fruitiness and its also balanced by a hint of brown sugar.

Taste: Assertive smoke flavor throughout, but fairly well balanced by other flavors. Smooth roasty chocolate malts immediately give way to smoked ham flavors. Never too sweet or bitter, smoke pervades the middle taste section which is quite drying, a little woody, and has a hint of ripe, dark fruits. Roasted malts mainly provide balance rather than drive the flavor. As it warms a blunted sweetness emerges. Quite high carbonation for a porter in my opinion, but it remains smooth. Finish is dry, smoky (more of the smoked ham flavor), with a hint of chocolate but doesn't linger long and isn't too intense. Overall, quite drinkable for a smoke beer.
