This is the second year I have tried this seasonal release. I did find that for 2015, I got a better batch than in 2014. I don't know if they changed the recipe for 2015, but I found it better this year in 2015. Overall, this style is nice for those extremely hot days of summer. I wasn't blown away by either year though. This is a good beer, just not a great beer in my opinion. I think the hype of this beer overshadows the actual product. It seems that the more unique a beer is brewed the stronger the hype is that comes along with it. Sure it is great to break new ground in the brewing industry, but I often think people get too caught up in the hype of things.

This beer poured a nice hazy straw color with little to no head to it. The smell was of melon and sweet malts. You could actually make out the watermelon odor off the beer this year, which I didn't get last year. The taste for me this year was very clean and refreshing. The watermelon flavor seems to bring a slight hint of sweetness to the light bodied wheat finish. This is an awesome combo for a summer beer. Easy to drink and not too heavy on the stomach. The ABV is 4.9% so you can definitely throw a few of these back. The taste was clean and didn't leave any lingering aftertaste really. I did enjoy this beer much better than last year. Now I am wondering if I had a bad batch or a skunked beer from 2014??? Anyway I am still saying better than average. A good summer beer to try and experience. Pair it with your day at the beach or at your backyard BBQ or tailgate party. (1,574 characters)

T- grainy water mellon flavor up front, fruity pepples, tart sweetness that finishes with a wet cardboard funk.

M- light, light bodied, sweet & dry.

12 oz can was poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: A one finger head was poured that reduced to a thin layer quickly. It is a hazy pale yellow with some vision of bubbles coming up through the glass.

Smell: Tart, bready, and sweet malts with a faint watermelon aroma.

Taste: Same as above. Bland with a tiny hint of watermelon.

Mouthfeel: Light, refreshing, a little chewy, and low carbonation.

Overall: Not too shabby for a warm weather beer. (452 characters)

Pours pale gold in color with a big white head. Smells of typical wheat beer aromas with a little soapiness and some watermelon. Flavor is light and crisp with apparent, but not overwhelming watermelon notes. I like this, it's unique but well executed. Good summer brew. (270 characters)

Purchased in a six pack/can from a local bottle shop.

Appearance is typical for a wheat beer: cloudy and off-white/golden.

Watermelon is muted to low appearance. Muted lemon flavor to flat.

Honestly, this beer would probably be better if re-imagined in a Gose style. It lacks the salt-metallic base notes that would bring the watermelon forward in a fresh/true form.

Okay as a wheat beer, but for the price you can purchase a better fruit/wheat beer.

Overall, it stops just short of being refreshing. (506 characters)

Poured into a Florida Beer Co. tapered glass. Bottom of can says Enjoy By 06/30/14. Damn cardboard six-pack packaging...

A- Pours a hazy dark golden color very similar to the way cider looks with a 1/2 inch white head that retains a bit before becoming a paper-thin ring around the edge of the glass and nearly no surface foam. No lacing to speak of.

S- Weak wheat beer smell. Hint of generic watermelon.

T- Starts out with that standard light wheat taste and then comes the watermelon that's very apparent but also somewhat subtle. The watermelon is a bit artificial tasting but luckily it's not too sweet so it remains manageable. Easy to drink, almost too easy. Watermelon aftertaste is OK.

M- Slightly syrupy with medium carbonation and a light body.

O- This beer serves its purpose as an innocuous, inoffensive wheat beer with some watermelon flavoring thrown in to make it a bit different. It's a quaffer, great for music festivals and sporting events where you just want something semi-refreshing and accessible to gulp and share with friends. Especially good for the non-beer-loving females. In the overall scheme of things though, there are much better things to be drank out there. (1,196 characters)

12 oz can poured into a shaker pint.

Appearance
straw-yellow with 1 finger of fluffy white head. Moderate carbonation with a slight haze.

Nose
Wheat, spent grains, butter, and a slight whiff of watermelon.

Taste
Big on wheatiness with a light lemony twang. Spent grains along with a terrible butter flavor that I usually find in Blue Moon. Slight essence of watermelon that comes off quite artificial.

Mouthfeel
Medium-light bodied, crisp, and clean.

Overall
A boring wheat beer with buttery off-flavors. (509 characters)

A 12oz can - Finally getting around to rating this one

A - Golden yellow with clarity. 1 finger of head and not much lacing. Carbonation bubbles

S - Not getting much on the nose. Light malting.

T - Watermelon, and lots of it. Refreshing and light. Slight bitter hop kick, and some citrus

M - Light bodied, refreshing, smooth. Not much too it

O - A good summer brew for a hot day. And excellent if you like watermelon and beer I suppose (440 characters)

This is my first beer from 21st Amendment. I am a fan of both wheat beers and fruit beers; haven't ever had a watermelon beer so I'm curious about this one.

A: Poured from the can into a nonic pint glass. Color is a hazy light yellow. You can tell this is an unfiltered wheat beer. There's a foamy two fingers of head that is gone just as quickly as it came. No lacing. Half way through there is no appearance of carbonation. Doesn't even look like a beer.

S: Pretty subtle. At first I smell a light citrus bitterness, and then the melon comes in the nose. After a few more whiffs it smells more like a vegetable beer.

T: The very initial taste is wheat malt and then the watermelon rushes over the taste buds. It recedes to a melon rind and cucumber taste. The more I drink the more these tastes meld together and become less identifiable.

MF: Light and pretty crisp. It is easy drinking but not as refreshing as I'd like a watermelon wheat beer that comes under 5% ABV.

O: Not sure how I feel about this beer. I enjoyed it, but I don't think I'd spend the money on this brew again. There's plenty of other great session beer options. (1,141 characters)

I loved the way the watermelon added to this beer. Not overpowering sweetness, just some light melon flavor in the background, refreshing yet slightly dry. This is an excellent summer, hot weather beer. Nice wheat backbone, pale golden in color, light foamy head. (263 characters)

Had to get a sixer while on vacation,,,, Charlotte, NC .

The packaging is great. well done!! Ive read about this beer so had to pick some up

A: Pours straw cloudy yellow with a two finger head that doesnt stick around for jack.

S: nothing amazing.. Grainy, pilsner esq aroma, light banana and clove reminiscent of a hefe.. but very light.

T: Welp.. Wheat beer. Light and crisp. and the watermelon is here. this is the best part of the digs. Almost reminds me of a watermellon warhead-flavor ish. then fades to a wheat/grain/grassy flavor. Has a dry finish, almost like a shot of whisky.. odd.. smokey-bourbon flavor for a sec that fades quick. That was interesting,,, yet... random.

M: Light and airy. Comes and goes. not much body to this one folks. But it IS a wheat brew so this is expected.

Glad I gave it a shot. Interesting brew. Id imagine on a hot summer day this would be quite nice. Worth a try if you can get some. (932 characters)

12 oz can into a pint glass.

A: Pours a clear (by wheat beer standards) straw color. There are two fingers of white-colored head. Unfortunately, the texture is akin to soda...and so is the retention. Almost no lacing is left behind.

S: Watermelon notes are very timid in this one. The base beer, on the other hand, seems to be very buttery and sweet - I hate to say it smells redolent of a macro lager, but it freakin' does. Okay, now I'm getting some watermelon after this opens up. Just a bit.

T: There's more of a watermelon presence on the palate, being sandwiched by a malty sweet start and a faintly buttery finish. Not as macro lagery as the nose indicated. A rather mediocre beer, but at least it's not a syrupy, watermelon-induced nightmare.

M: Rather light and sweet on the palate. Not disgustingly sweet, thankfully. The carbonation seems powerful, but it's obscured by the sweetness somewhat.

O: Someone was bound to make a watermelon beer eventually, and I'm glad 21st Amendment did. This kind of beer isn't my thing - while it's refreshing, I can think of more enjoyable beers that do the same basic thing. Try it if you really like watermelon, otherwise get something else. (1,194 characters)

Pours out a nice yellow in color maybe a little darker than yellow but pretty close. Definitely a healthy two-finger white head with decent retention but really nice lacing.

Smell is pretty mellow with not much in the nose at all. Maybe a little sweet malts and that's about all I get.

Taste is quite different. There is a TINY bit of watermelon but I would not have guessed it if I didn't see the name. The backbone is sorta there but there really isn't much to this beer.

Mouthfeel is basically what I would expect from a wheat beer like this as it is quite thin.

Overall this is just not the beer I expected. It's not a decent wheat beer and I really only get a TINY bit of anything resembling watermelon or fruit. That being said it's not a bad beer but it isn't much better than a bud or something. I would not recommend this beer as it was a total letdown. (866 characters)

Poured into a chilled pint glass

A - Straw hazy orange...identical to a blue moon. Depleting one inch head and noticeably a wheat beer.

S - You get that wheat beer smell some fruit and melon too. No hop presence.

T - A perfect summer, easy drinking brew. In the taste you really get that watermelon flavor.especially after swallowing it... I don't understand why this beer got the rating it did....so lame.

M - easy drinking brew, medium carbonation.

A perfect beer for hanging out back with a bbq. easy drinking...slightly fruity. Some citra hop presence would have put this beer over the top....it would of complemented this watermelon nice. Go get it. (660 characters)

Nothing tastes more like summer than the unofficial fruit of watermelon. And when trying to use that refreshing taste to create an unofficial beer of summer the concern is whether the delicate and crisp taste could stand up- even to a light American Wheat Beer.

But as the beer pours, there's little evidence of the fruit inside. The hazy straw ale is nicely golden at its depths. A certain tilt of the glass can show a pinkish stain, but maybe that's also my mind playing tricks on me. Its foamy head rises with a character that's partly frothy and partly sprite. With retention and lacing both moderate, I get the impression that its head character would underwhelm if I allowed the session to last very long.

There it is! Not just watermelon, but all sorts of melon with strawberry and cantaloupe. And with supporting aromatics of bread and pulled candy- the scent hinges on hard candy flavor with those fruity scents front and center. Not all fruit, the beer's mild citrus and leafy aromas cast a hoppy note on the senses going into taste.

Its flavors start earthy and sweet as the wheat of the beer is mildly grainy-sweet and filled with shortbread. The melon flavors start moderate and continue to build, each sip more heightened than the other with a taste that hinges of the dripping ripeness of watermelon and that of candy. Yet its herbal, leafy and mildly grassy finish returns to hops as the ale crispens right up.

Light bodied from sip 'til finish, the ale is somewhat watery, but perhaps by design. Its creamy-dry upstart quickly sheds its carbonation to usher in a grainy and wafer-thin finish to prop up the taste. Its finish is herbal and grassy with minty warmth.

Akin to Abita's Strawberry Harvest, the ale underneath the fruit offers tepid support and the fruit, though truly seductive seems a bit contrived. If the balance is off, then it is beautifully off. I have a soft spot on my palate for these types of beer. (1,941 characters)

Normally, I stay away from fruit flavored beers because they often come across tasting like candy or are just too sweet for my liking. But not with Hell or High Watermelon. You get a hint of the watermelon and it doesn't over power other parts of the beer. It's actually one of my go to beers to bring to summertime BBQ's at the neighborhood pool. It's very refreshing to drink on a hot summer's day. (400 characters)

Interesting beer. It is straw colored, with a small head. Faint haze. Vegetal smell...not quite watermelon, but rather a watermelon rind and stem. The taste, though, is very summery, full of farm watermelon. One of the more unique beers I've ever had. Light and dry, but very genuine. Interesting and fun. (305 characters)

12 oz can poured into a tulip.
4.9% ABV,

A - Slightly hazed, Hell or High Watermelon is warm pale straw yellow in color with a soapy white head that relaxes to a ring of foam and little lace left behind.

S - Juicy Jolly Rancher watermelon aroma blends with pale malt and soft wheat for a simple but dry, inviting aroma that suggests faint tartness in the background.

T - Watermelon flavor is at the forefront and carefully teeters between authentic and artificial, but nicely blending with the one dimensional pale malt base.

M - Crisp and refreshing, Hell or High Watermelon is light bodied and effervescent with a slightly dry finish that trails off with clean drinkability.

O - It's been my experience trying to incorporate the flavor of natural watermelon into a beer without a syrupy, fake outcome is incredibly hard. That said, I think 21st Amendment has done a fine job producing such a beer; one with good watermelon flavor incorporated nicely into a (963 characters)

A pretty solid summer brew that it seems is becoming a love-it or hate-it beer around most parts. I get the complaints that it doesn't taste like real watermelon, but what really does? Hell, watermelon tastes like pure sugar sometimes depending on the quality of it.

Either way, this is an extremely sessionable beer that is light, smooth, and good for the summer. I can't imagine drinking this at any other time than on a hot day (and it's really, really, really good for working on cars in a hot driveway), so I should limit my review to that, I guess.

EIther way, I like it quite a bit in the summer but would never want to drink it at any other time. (656 characters)

12oz can into a tall pils glass.

A: Cloudy effervescent straw color with a faint wispy white head.

S: Light wheat beer aromas, yeast, some grassy notes and a touch of fruitiness...no real watermelon aromas.

T: More watermelon here but I'm not partial to it - sorta fake and funky, a bit sour. Musty and grainy as wheat beers go, but watery at the same time.

MF: Lighter body with moderate carbonation.

O: Not real good. I finished the glass but didn't really want to. Don't like the watermelon that is there, and there isn't a lot of it. As far as a wheat beer its light and pilsner-like, grainy and grassy and watery. Just not my favorite but not terrible. (662 characters)

12 ounce can, canned on 6/27/13. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours a slightly hazy gold color with about an inch white head. Head retention is decent, and there isn't much lacing. The brew smells mostly like sweet and bready malt, along with a bit of watermelon Jolly Rancher candy. The taste is similar to the aroma, except that there's more balance between the malty and watermelon flavor. Mouthfeel/body is light, it's smooth and easy enough to drink. Not a bad beer for a hot day. I only grabbed this since I was able to get a single can at my local Kroger. I wouldn't buy a six pack of this, but it's worth trying if you've never had it before. (654 characters)

The appearance isn't bad - pale cloudy straw color, 2 fingers of lacing which dies pretty quickly; But I am getting about as much taste as a Miller Lite, maybe with a slight watermelon fruit essence and slight melon odor. Highly carbonated. Was worth one try to satisfy my curiosity, but will never get again. (309 characters)
