12 oz. can brought back from visit to Boston in August. Freshness date on can bottom is June 6th, so 6 mo. old & well past peak. Poured into Duvel tulip glass.

A: Crystal clear gold/amber; very little effervescence; off-white 1-1/4" foam that drops slowly and leaves fairly consistent thin layer of lacing.

S: Mostly caramel malt, with some fruit and vanilla; apparent alcohol.

T: Vanilla caramel, moderate bitterness, woody aftertaste.

M: Very creamy and smooth; low carbonation, medium/full body; substantial alcohol warming.

O: Malt and alcohol dominate at this point of this brew's timeline, so the balance has tipped away from the six different hops with the resulting 94 IBUs. A very good D.I.P.A., somewhat reminiscent of Tyranena Hop Whore, but with more alcohol and added oaky flavor.

Appearance - Crisp/clear light amber body with about a finger and a half of head that settles quickly. Lots of small bubbles that are rising from the bottom of the glass up to the head. Decent lacing that tracks your sips down the side of the glass.

Smell - Bright, floral nose with hints of grapefruit and other citrus notes. Hardly any of the 9.7% ABV coming through the nose. Smells sweet with little of a hop character, but has some sweet mango in the nose.

Taste - Lots of similarities between the smell and flavor. Definite citrus sweetness to start off with but it subtly and slowly subsides into a more hop flavor, without ever being very bitter. The high ABV is still masked quite well in the flavor.

Mouthfeel - fairly highly carbonated with a slightly thicker consistency than most IPA's that I've had. It kind of works well with the sweetness of this IPA.

Overall - Nice clean IIPA that is a little different than most of the others in the genre that I have tasted. This beer appropriately hides the high ABV without overloading the beer with bittering hops. It is a good beer, but probably not something that I will be extremely eager to try again.

Well....I am trying a can of Hop Crisis...from Cold Spring, MN...however....I am putting my rating on 21st Amendment out of San Fran....so how do you answer this Beer Advocate???? The beer pours a clear yellow with thin white head that appears to be lacing. The smell is grapefruite balanced by malt. The taste includes a hop coating on the tongue makes this beer very good. The mouthfeel is a fuller body with good carbonation. Overall I would sip opn one of these....not session....to powerful.

A - Pours a medium gold color with a thick, creamy, foamy layer of head sits, stays, and doesn't subside!

S - WEAK nose for a 9+% beer. Very light malt, mildly earthy, and smells pretty much like flavored water to me. (sorry to say)

T - Sweet crackery caramel malt up front, miniml hop character, maybe a little lemon rind, grapefruit, and oranges (and I'm really digging for that description).

M - Smooth and creamy but feels totally DEAD on the tongue.

O - I'd love to give this beer another opportunity with a fresher batch because I can detect it's potential.

Right off the bat, I knew something was different about this beer. I could smell a sweetness as I was pouring the beer, and I was quite excited for the first sip. I was a little disappointing at first, but then as the beer warmed up just a little, all the subtle flavors just popped. There was an awesome hop presences in the beer that was perfectly complimented with the strong oak flavor. Quite a fantastic beer, and one I'd highly recommended to everyone.
