even on a careful pour the head froths forth into the glass, rising nearly three fingers it calms down into a craggy mess of large soap bubbles that are slightly off white, as the name implies this is black (not like steve martin). pretty good lookin' I must say...
the first sense is some subtle roast aroma, sweet cocoa lurks in the shadows underneath that layer, the hops are hard to detect but are there, a nice subdued bouquet
I wasn't expecting the carbonation as I forgot this is an "IPA"... the roast really threw me off, The carbonation sort of seems out of place but it does carry the bitter hops well... the roast kind of floats over the top of the bitterness. this feels slightly heavier than other IPAs, visually this throws me off but it really does drink like a tamer IPA with a hint of roast. The hops linger and gather as you sip this one down.. something about the carbonation really bothers me though... I really think less carb here would improve this beer.
pretty interesting beer, definitely worth a look. I wouldn't turn one down if it was offered.

Had at Bar of Soap Asheville. Served in a pint glass
A- Pours a mostly opaque dark brown color with a 1/2 inch light tan head that retains well before diminishing to a...whoops.
S- Semi-pungent piney hops break out of the glass against a mildly roasty backdrop.
T- Quite bitter with the dark roast accentuating the bitterness and leaving a chocolate aftertaste. Alcohol is certainly present but works well within the construct of the overall flavor profile. Bitterness lingers after a few sips.
M- Oily, thick and somewhat sharp. Medium carbonation and a fullish body.
O- This is probably one of my favorite 21st Amendment beers. A no-nonsense black IPA that brings the hops and roast right into the forefront but, even on a hot day, it goes down nicely.
