Can't really beat the jet black look of this beer - it looks like a stout, and definitely lives up to its name. Head is think and tan with nice lacing that lingers. Nose doesn't have the roast that it looks like it would have - it smells like your average IPA with floral hoppiness.

Taste has an interesting mix of earthy hops and smoky malts - a good balance, but lacking in anything that really stands out. Medium body is ideal for this beer, nice and smooth without too much lingering aftertaste. Overall a good beer for the style, but maybe lacks something that stands out.

A: Jet black color, thick and frothy light khaki head, good carbonation and lacing

S: Hops and dark malts, nicely balanced

T: A little different than other black ales to me, some bitter hops and dark malts, a little more hops than malts

M: Smooth, decent carbonation, medium bodied

O: Above average Black IPA

Hoegaarden Glass
A ~ Pours dark brown (Dr. pepper) w/ a Khaki colored head collapsing into a spitty looking cap. Reminds me of a darker Dogzilla, which is not a good thing. Decent lace.

S ~ Pleasant citrus notes & a little cocoa. No roast notes that I come to expect w/ Black IPAs, but it is an informal style so what the hell. It still smells pretty decent. Light astringency.

T ~ Citrus follows through with weak coffee & caramel close behind. Faint mango. Citrus zest on the finish w/ a touch of semi-sweet chocolate. Bit of sweet baked goods. (Cinnamon Rolls)

M ~ Floral on the palette, but Heat is prevalent & that detracts a lot considering the ABV is not necessarily high. Needs more carbonation.

D ~ Was very very very happy to try this (a want for a long while) but to me it is more of a Hoppy brown ale than a black IPA. The roast just isn't very strong. I'm left wanting more in the end, it's very ho-hum. Thanks for the opportunity Crabbicus!

Appearance - Pitch black, two-finger head with good staying power. Lovely lacing as the head settles.

Smell - Heavy caramel and candy, almost no hops are evident at the pour. Smells much more like a porter than an IPA.

Taste - The malt is the star here, rich coffee mixes with a smooth creamy caramel. Hop bitterness balances the palate, but no citrus or pine really pops out; it's possible my can was a bit old. Finish is clean, though, unlike a porter, which counters the heaviness of the malt somewhat.

Mouthfeel - Clean and carbonated, this is the only sign that I'm drinking an IPA hybrid.

Overall - Not what I expected at all. It is much more reminiscent of an English Old Ale (say, Theakston Old Peculiar). Not a bad beer at all, but strays quite far from style. I may give this a second go if I can find a fresher can, but I still prefer the Otter Creek interpretation of the Black IPA.

The Alstrom Brothers state that "You know a beer style has made it when it has been canned." I could not agree more, however don't think that it is a knock. The fact that we can get a quality Black IPA canned is a greajt thing. Back in Black pours opaque and has light malt notes in the nose. Plenty of nice hop flavor throughout each sip. It's very smooth and a dry finish. It is a decent quality canned option.
