Pours a nearly opaque brown with a tan, long-lasting head that leaves a lot of lace.
The aroma is a combination of citrus and roasted malt with a hint of something vegetal/grassy.
Taste features plenty of hop bite right up front, plenty of citrus and pine followed by dark chocolate and roast coffee notes that finish the sip on a bitter note.
Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy.
Quite enjoyed it. (393 characters)

Poured from a 12oz can into a Speiglau IPA glass.

Dark brown bordering on black with reddish brown highlights at the edges of the glass.

Rich frothy head.

Aroma is highly roasty with a slight citrus hop note.

Taste is roast coffee with a thin body. Strong bitterness with a slight chalk note. (297 characters)

Clear dark brown beer with a little red observed during the pour. Big tan head which breaks down quickly. Mild sweet aroma with dark malts and subtle earthy hops. The flavor is very similar and predominantly dark malty sweetness. Subtle dark fruity and earthy hops. Mild bitterness for an IPA that lingers only a little. Full flavor and pretty smooth. (357 characters)

From the 12 fl. oz. can. Stamped Enjoy by 7/2/15. It is July 4, 2015. Hope it didn't go bad overnight.

Really dark brown pour under a full, tan head.

The aroma has some roasted malt sweetness but I also pick up something akin to roses. Maybe that is another way to define floral hops.

The body is about medium.

The hop bitterness kicks in more noticeably in the flavor after I get through those dark malt extracts. Mild bitterness at the end. (447 characters)

A: Dark brown, nearly black but lifting to the light reveals a little translucence, 1 inch khaki head, good lacing

S: Dark malts, floral hops, both equally present

T: Sweet malts, caramel, bitter hops in middle, floral, chocolate comes through on back end, maybe a little coffee

M: Medium to full, velvety carbonation

O: I love this style and this beer is not the best representation Ive had but still hard to beat. I love how the chocolaty dark malts mix with the astringent hops. Glad my growler shop picked it up. (527 characters)

i agree with the criticism of others here in that this might not be quite hoppy enough to fit the black ipa bill, but i dont think thats as big a negative here as it has been deemed to be by the masses. as a porter, even a hoppy one, i think it excels. nice dark look to it, not real thick, but quite impenetrable to light, and holding its head well. nose is a hint of pine hops, maybe cascade or centennial, something similar, there isnt any of that oily sweet hop resin that maybe people were looking for. in the taste, there is a really nice dryness, one rich with cocoa powder notes from the malt, and pleasant bitterness from the roasted barley and the hops in communion. the body is medium but not heavy, fluffy and well carbonated enough to drink quite a bit of it, but you have to drink it fast, it warms up not so well, with a tannic sharpness coming out of nowhere. well built beer, lighter on the hops than many, but is serves its purpose well in my book, i really enjoyed this one. (993 characters)

The first and only other black IPA I've had so far has been the Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous IPA, which is easily one of the most fascinating beers I've tried. Back in Black's somewhat simplified flavor has both advantages and disadvantages, mostly directly related to this simplification on both accounts. The most notable difference is just how much the stout-esque quality shines through in this beer. It creates an aftertaste that is almost akin to a cola, and it makes this beer somewhat less profound but definitely more sessionable. Not a beer I could get lost in, but I could certainly have a few and not get sick of it. (630 characters)

Look - Color lacked depth more brown than black.
Taste - improved as it warmed but had too much of a smoky, charred quality.
Overall - just not enough there to like. (165 characters)

I was really surprised how much I enjoyed this one. I'm not totally gaga over black IPAs but this one pulls it off very well. Balanced is the best way to describe this one. (172 characters)

This is a pretty beer but very average overall. Will not buy again.

Medium brown color, big, persistent pale tan head.

Hints of malt, but mostly unattractive bitterness, with hints of unripe pine. Long, piney finish with distinct chemical and asphalt notes.

Feels pretty good. Slightly rich, tastes unfiltered.

Nope. (320 characters)

12oz can - pours a dark caramel/black color similar to cola, with 2 finger beige head with moderate lacing. The smell is roasted malt with slight coffee notes and faint earthy pine hops. The taste is like the nose, roasted malt upfront with small amount of coffee finished with mild bitter pith and semidry. Definitely hides the 6.8% alc well. Light to medium body and low to medium carbonation. Overall not bad but not mind blowing either. Nice to have if you want something a bit different and I like cans. (508 characters)

12oz can, Enjoy by 05/15/15
A - fluffy tan colored head tops a cola colored ale; great head retention
S - earthy, tea-like, faint chocolate and citrus
T - nice complexity with well balanced flavors: chocolate, pine, tea, earth, grapefruit rind, roasted barley
M - medium body, a bit resinous, nice roasty bitter finish
O - one of the better American black ales I've had. I really like this style, and this one is solidly good. (426 characters)

I thought this ale was a mess. It looked good in the glass and that was about it. Medicinal taste, off-putting. And I really like black IPAs. Maybe I got a bad batch. (168 characters)

Pretty good. Aroma's mainly hop with a hint of malt. Appearance is excellent with a huge, long lasting, tan head, lots of lace, and a clear dark garnet color. Taste is similar to nose, good balance between malt sweet, hop bitter, & carbonic tang. Good body. Finish falls fast at first and then tapers very slow at the last. Fairly drinkable beer; wouldn't mind another. (369 characters)

Can into pint at Rocklands. Pours cola dark with tan foam that dissipates quickly. Smells of roasty malts and piney hops. Flavor is bitter, smokey, sweet malty. Thin body, dry finish, porter-esque. (197 characters)

I really like Hop Crisis and other offerings from 21st Amendment, but this one was underwhelming. Bitter up front, without a distinctive hops character - not citrus, not pine, not earthy, not...anything. Oh, well. Their other stuff is good. (243 characters)

Great dark hue with deep amber tinge and a slick vanishing porter-like head. Cola-ish scent. A bit dull on the way in, but carries nice carbonation across the middle of the tongue, and leaves a malty trail down the back of the pallet as it deposits slight tones of tobacco and vanilla. Not all its hyped to be, but would order one at a bar on a crisp winter evening. (366 characters)

Wow. This looks like a stout but is all west coast style IPA. Very piney aroma folllows into the flavor with a medium-strong hippy bitterness that is very refreshing. Pleasantly surprised. (189 characters)

Poured from the can into a pint glass…beautiful pillowy head with great retention and lacing. dark coffee like brown color

Aroma was basic holiness, but seems more malt to me…not the best attribute of this ale

Taste was very mild for an IPA, some cocoa, walnut, with a little alcohol in the back. Some lingering bitterness, but not unpleasant

Mouthfeel was medium to slightly full bodied, excellent carbonation, almost stout-like in its feel, some astringency and a little off at the finish

Overall, a pleasant enough ale, with a lot going for it at the start, it finished a little bitter for me, but nothing to bad. Not my favorite, but a solid decent ale. (669 characters)

An unusually nice day for November in Oregon yesterday, so I picked up a bargain growlette at Plew's to give this a try with some grilled burgers. It was very pleasant, with a nice bitter back to complement the roasted malt, and it went really well with the mushroom and onion burgers.
I'd definitely buy this again sometime. (326 characters)

Enjoy By: 01/22/15

A: Pours a near black color with 2+ fingers of tan head that very slowly fades down to a nice fluffy cap that leaves some nice lacing

S: Nice and hoppy along with a decent amount of roast up front. Hops are lightly citrusy and piney, with a bit of earthiness. Also get some dark chocolate in there, made a little sweeter from the crystal malt

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with the roasted malts and citrus and pine notes. This is followed by some mild sweetness and earthiness. Finishes with a moderate bitterness and more roast

M: Medium-full bodied with low-moderate carbonation. Very smooth, nearing on creamy

O: A very drinkable and enjoyable black IPA. Not over the top with bitterness or hops, it is extremely well balanced and does a great job getting the most out of both malt and hops. A nice surprise (837 characters)
