Poured from 12 Oz can into a pint glass. Pours a big frothy sea foam looking head and a thick chocolate. A great mix of hops, malts and very balanced flavors

pours dark black with a slight ruby tone.

i smell sweet malt. sweet caramel.

taste is roasted malt with some sweet citrus hops. odd combination but for a black IPA it works. goes down smooth, easy to drink.

overall this is a pretty good beer. nothing spectacular but still a good beer. goes down smooth and has a clean taste. would totally drink this again

Appearance : Cola brown with 100% opacity. Popcorn colored head, 3 fingers tall. Leaves pockets of lace on the sides of the pint glass.

Smell : An exceptional aroma of both pine needles and roasted malts. Rye bread, cocoa, milk, and oat can also be nosed.

Taste : First piney, then malty, then piney again, and a final wash of cocoa malts. A fair bit of cocoa powder, toast malts, lactose, and oatmeal accompany the piney body. Some burnt brown sugar as well.

Feel : Medium bodied, yet still crisp and refreshing. Moderate carbonation props it up and finishes on a semi-dry parch.

Overall : A very nice Black IPA. These are my kinds of IPA’s. I’d gladly have this one again.

On tap at Ogies Trailer Park:

Pours a rich dark brown, with a small, quickly dissipating head. Looks almost exactly like coca-cola. Not much discernible smell, either in malt or hop aroma. Just a little bit of char from the roasted malt, and that's pretty much it. Taste is decent, solid amount of malt, but not too sweet. Not much in the way of hops from what I got anyway. Feels crisp, with a medium body, and a short finish. Overall, it's a decent beer, but not one I'd go out of my way to find.

I saw a curious box with some neat illustrations. The box has dark colors to reflect the black IPA hidden inside. It has 65 IBUs and 6.8% ABV.

Look-It pours a nearly opaque black body with a tan head that is rich and foamy.

Smell-It smells of rich coffee beans and chocolate. I get hints of toffee and brown sugar.

Taste-You get a swath of grassy hops right up front that are subtle and delicate. The flavors of dark chocolate, coffee beans, toffee, caramel hints with some brown sugar, come out strong and then it finishes clean.

Mouthfeel-It is smooth and fizzy from the medium strong carbonation. The grassy hops burst forth from the carbonation and the brew overall is about medium-bodied. There is a lingering grassy bitterness that coats the tongue nicely which cuts the sweetness.

Overall-This beer isn’t syrupy or overly sweet at all. It is rather refreshing and enjoyable. It’s very drinkable and delicious. Cheers!

Pours a nearly opaque brown with a tan, long-lasting head that leaves a lot of lace.
The aroma is a combination of citrus and roasted malt with a hint of something vegetal/grassy.
Taste features plenty of hop bite right up front, plenty of citrus and pine followed by dark chocolate and roast coffee notes that finish the sip on a bitter note.
Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy.
Quite enjoyed it.

Poured from a 12oz can into a Speiglau IPA glass.

Dark brown bordering on black with reddish brown highlights at the edges of the glass.

Rich frothy head.

Aroma is highly roasty with a slight citrus hop note.

Taste is roast coffee with a thin body. Strong bitterness with a slight chalk note.

Clear dark brown beer with a little red observed during the pour. Big tan head which breaks down quickly. Mild sweet aroma with dark malts and subtle earthy hops. The flavor is very similar and predominantly dark malty sweetness. Subtle dark fruity and earthy hops. Mild bitterness for an IPA that lingers only a little. Full flavor and pretty smooth.

From the 12 fl. oz. can. Stamped Enjoy by 7/2/15. It is July 4, 2015. Hope it didn't go bad overnight.

Really dark brown pour under a full, tan head.

The aroma has some roasted malt sweetness but I also pick up something akin to roses. Maybe that is another way to define floral hops.

The body is about medium.

The hop bitterness kicks in more noticeably in the flavor after I get through those dark malt extracts. Mild bitterness at the end.

A: Dark brown, nearly black but lifting to the light reveals a little translucence, 1 inch khaki head, good lacing

S: Dark malts, floral hops, both equally present

T: Sweet malts, caramel, bitter hops in middle, floral, chocolate comes through on back end, maybe a little coffee

M: Medium to full, velvety carbonation

O: I love this style and this beer is not the best representation Ive had but still hard to beat. I love how the chocolaty dark malts mix with the astringent hops. Glad my growler shop picked it up.

i agree with the criticism of others here in that this might not be quite hoppy enough to fit the black ipa bill, but i dont think thats as big a negative here as it has been deemed to be by the masses. as a porter, even a hoppy one, i think it excels. nice dark look to it, not real thick, but quite impenetrable to light, and holding its head well. nose is a hint of pine hops, maybe cascade or centennial, something similar, there isnt any of that oily sweet hop resin that maybe people were looking for. in the taste, there is a really nice dryness, one rich with cocoa powder notes from the malt, and pleasant bitterness from the roasted barley and the hops in communion. the body is medium but not heavy, fluffy and well carbonated enough to drink quite a bit of it, but you have to drink it fast, it warms up not so well, with a tannic sharpness coming out of nowhere. well built beer, lighter on the hops than many, but is serves its purpose well in my book, i really enjoyed this one.

The first and only other black IPA I've had so far has been the Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous IPA, which is easily one of the most fascinating beers I've tried. Back in Black's somewhat simplified flavor has both advantages and disadvantages, mostly directly related to this simplification on both accounts. The most notable difference is just how much the stout-esque quality shines through in this beer. It creates an aftertaste that is almost akin to a cola, and it makes this beer somewhat less profound but definitely more sessionable. Not a beer I could get lost in, but I could certainly have a few and not get sick of it.

Look - Color lacked depth more brown than black.
Taste - improved as it warmed but had too much of a smoky, charred quality.
Overall - just not enough there to like.

I was really surprised how much I enjoyed this one. I'm not totally gaga over black IPAs but this one pulls it off very well. Balanced is the best way to describe this one.

This is a pretty beer but very average overall. Will not buy again.

Medium brown color, big, persistent pale tan head.

Hints of malt, but mostly unattractive bitterness, with hints of unripe pine. Long, piney finish with distinct chemical and asphalt notes.

Feels pretty good. Slightly rich, tastes unfiltered.

12oz can - pours a dark caramel/black color similar to cola, with 2 finger beige head with moderate lacing. The smell is roasted malt with slight coffee notes and faint earthy pine hops. The taste is like the nose, roasted malt upfront with small amount of coffee finished with mild bitter pith and semidry. Definitely hides the 6.8% alc well. Light to medium body and low to medium carbonation. Overall not bad but not mind blowing either. Nice to have if you want something a bit different and I like cans.

12oz can, Enjoy by 05/15/15
A - fluffy tan colored head tops a cola colored ale; great head retention
S - earthy, tea-like, faint chocolate and citrus
T - nice complexity with well balanced flavors: chocolate, pine, tea, earth, grapefruit rind, roasted barley
M - medium body, a bit resinous, nice roasty bitter finish
O - one of the better American black ales I've had. I really like this style, and this one is solidly good.

Pretty good. Aroma's mainly hop with a hint of malt. Appearance is excellent with a huge, long lasting, tan head, lots of lace, and a clear dark garnet color. Taste is similar to nose, good balance between malt sweet, hop bitter, & carbonic tang. Good body. Finish falls fast at first and then tapers very slow at the last. Fairly drinkable beer; wouldn't mind another.
