Poured into a tulip glass, it pours a dark chestnut color w/ hints of ruby red. A 1-finger thick tan dense head forms on top quickly and slowly dissipates to a very nice surface layer w/ some lacing on the glass.

Heavy on the plums with some brown sugar...very sweet on the nose. Some spices also come through as well, but not as apparent. Cherries also to accompany the plums.

Sipping reveals a very interesting flavor. Much more malty and "nutty" than expected. The fruits come through (plums or cherries) but not tart as thought. Some biscuits come through as well w/ the yeast flavor. Alcohol burn is there for sure on the swallow as well as a very flavorful aftertaste.

Big bodied brew w/ some nice carbonation balance and a nice burn on the finish. Maybe more burn than hoped for on the finish, but the feel is overall nice!

Overall, I love 21st Amendment, but honestly as much as I like the dark belgian style, this is not one of my favorites. I tend to enjoy some of their other offerings a bit more. Not a bad brew to say the least, but I was slightly disappointed for $12 for a 4 pack.

A - Head poured thick but fell back quickly leaving nice lace. Liquid is a nice dark color. Served in a chalice from a can.

S - Like any great dark Belgian, strong notes of dark fruits and spice

T - Like the smell, it does not disappoint. Raisins and clove foremost plus candy sugars, other spices I can't identify and dark fruit flavors throughout.

M - Medium to light mouthfeel, maybe a bit thinner than I'm used to from the style.

O - One of the better US made Belgians. Particularly impressive coming from a can. Strong heavy flavors make it a great sipping beer and not very sessionable.

Poured from a 12oz can at Firehouse No. 1 in San Jose, Calif. Reviewed from notes.

A- Finger width white head, somewhat low retention. Nice lacing. Mahogany color with low clarity.

S- Coppery, chocolate, roast marshmallow. Sweet and metallic scent.

T- Rich, roast malts and some subdued hops. Roast marshmallow and campfire kind of tastes. Quite nice. Finishes bitter and metallic.

M- Rich and creamy, nice feel.

O- Rich and very heavy beer all around. Filling.

12 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 3/26/2012. Pours lightly cloudy red copper color with a nice 2 finger fairly dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of molasses, banana, clove, pear, fig, cinnamon, allspice, dark bread, candi sugar, oak, pepper, and yeast spiciness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity. Taste of prune, brown sugar, fig, dark bread, toast, cinnamon, clove, ripe banana, oak, candi sugar, earth, and yeast spiciness. Lingering notes of dark fruit, brown sugar, dark bread, toast, candi sugar, clove, cinnamon, banana, earth, oak, and yeast spices on the finish for a good bit. Solid flavor balance and good complexity; a touch too bready and spicy; with zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a creamy, slick, and lightly prickly mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very good Belgian strong dark ale. Nice complexity and solid flavor balance; and very smooth to sip on. I enjoyed this quite a bit.

Appearance shows a very dark brown color supporting a fair head and lace. Smell is rich in dark fruits, sweet malt, cotton candy with a light spice in the back. Taste of the rich dark fruits, light spice and having a sweetness of cream soda, hops are there but not upfront leaving a nice balance. Mouthfeel is medium with good carbonation. A nice treat to sip upon.

Can to Goose Island Chalice

Thanks to my brother in law for this one from DC. (Go figure)

App- It poured out like a soda. Very brown with some light notes on the bottom of the pour. A little bit of a rust tinge. The head was a small thin off tan color. It faded quickly and didnt leave any cling or lace.

Smell- The aromatics came together nicely on this one. The vanilla was a bit mellow and the fig and dark fruits created a nice blend of BSDA and then a bit of a cinnamon note came through. It wasnt the most aromatic but it pulled together nicely.

Taste- I liked it. It had a nice spice note to it. The flavors melded well and calmed down with a bit of time in the can (I know 7 months isnt long). It was flavorful and semi balanced with a bit of the vanilla coming in waves and the figs adding a good layer to it. Not as big as other BSDA but was a good format in the can to enjoy.

Mouth- This was a bit light for the style and was almost too thin. A bit like a soda really thats been watered down. The carbonation was nice and high. The bubbles created a nice effect and the residual spice and fig/vanilla was a good flavor.

Drink- I am still pissed we cant get 21st in So. Cal. This had to come all the way from DC from my bro-in-law. Oh well. Still a nice beer. Id have again, but fresh.

pours a ruddy mahogany tone while yielding a finger of beige head; average retention and some patchy lacing evident. nose offers dark fruit, caramel, a little spice, Belgian yeast, alcohol and some candi sugar.

flavor follows the nose with plenty of dark fruit, candi sugar, oak, caramel, spice, Belgian yeast, brown sugar, and a hint of vanilla in the background. medium bodied mouthfeel with average carbonation.

while this one doesn't lack for flavor, the whole is less than the sum of its parts IMO. still a tasty brew i would welcome a revisit to, but not a home run.

Only my 2nd craft beer from a can!!

Pours out a nice copper/fig color with hints of ruby red and a nice 4 fingers of khaki head.

The aroma has a lot of fig, plum and raisin, along with candied sugar, vanilla and oak.

The taste is also strongly made up of fig, plum and raisin. The notes of molasses and cinnamon help balance it out along with the hint of coriander, yeasty notes and vanilla and oak.

The body is light and the mouthfeel is thin. It's definitely not watery, but it's light for a beer of this style. The alcohol is masked very, very well.

This won't be around in 2013 and maybe even longer so pick this up if you still can.

12oz can, canned on 3/5/12, poured into a tulip glass

A: Light brown with a one-finger head that slowly settles to 1/2 finger the lingers. A bit of yeast floating around.
S: Brown sugar, tropical fruit esters, cherries, figs. Smells quite sweet.
T: Sweet dried cherries, fig, brown sugar, a hint of cocoa. Tasty, but the sugars could be toed back a bit.
M: Medium-bodied and has nice carbonation, but comes across a touch syrupy from the sugar.
O: This has a lot of potential and I would love to try one closer to it's canned-on date. That being said, this can, while tasty overall, was too sweet/sugary for my palate.

Can into tulip.

A- Murky, opaque brown pour with red highlights. Finger and a half off white head with sticky gobs of lacing.

S- Brown sugar, figs, vanilla, dates, candied sugar, strawberries and a touch of alcohol. Smells syrupy and sweet.

T- Slight alcohol right up front, there is a touch of a metallic taste to it. Brown sugar, vanilla, figs, dates, cinnamon, maple syrup and some dark roasted malts.

M- Medium body, low carbonation, slightly syrupy.

O- Overall this is pretty good. Years ago the alcohol in the taste would have turned me right off, now I can appreciate how it adds to the flavour and character of the beer.

Poured from the can.

Cloudy, brownish-red in colour. There was an interesting nose to it: vanilla, malts, raisen, oak and you could definitely smell the alcohol in it. The taste had a heavy oak taste with a hint of bitterness. Sweet, Belgian-yeast finish. You could tell that it is 8.3% ABV.

Would I buy it again? Yes.

The brew poured a slightly reddish-brown color and was a bit cloudy. The head was pure white and one finger. It dissipated after a few minutes and left some lacing on the glass. The nose presented with some booze, raisins and dark fruit and a hint of Belgian yeast. The taste is definitely dark fruit coupled with moderate carbonation and a hint of fig. The alcohol is pretty well hidden in the taste. A bit of spice also came out, specifically cinnamon. The body is a little lighter than expected, but very pleasant. This is definitely an easy Belgian style brew to drink and if not for the alcohol I would. The finish lingers a bit and for me, that’s where I got a bit of heat from the booze. This is a brew that does not disappoint. I would definitely have this again.

A - rich dark antique wood color with a half finger of white head to hazy to note any carbonation or sediment

S- the vanilla hits first, a nice oaky vanilla combination. The figs do play a small role in the nose, but I can't find the cinnamon. Roasted malts supply an incredible vehicle for the adjuncts to blossom.

T - A weird amalgamation of flavors, the cinnamon and hops cuts the vanilla sweetness like a katana, the flavor is complex and layered,but the combination is strange and not the best pairing

M&D - however, the strangeness and uniqueness is what it has going for it. it is smooth and disappears quickly as you struggle to pinpoint the flavors, a good beer with one of the most unusual flavors (without being downright freaky)

355ml can served into a conical USC branded mini pint glass in me friend Bo's gaff in low altitude Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are high given the style.

Served straight from the refrigerator and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with extra vigor by accident; I'm used to pouring from bottles.

Paired with pretzel rods.

A: Pours a four finger khaki head of nice cream and thickness, and great retention (though the pour was very aggressive). Colour is a nontransparent caramel-copper. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Predictable for the style, but appealing.

Sm: Fig, raisin, alcohol, biscuit malt, dark malt, caramel, some plum, and toasted malt. Very appealing and enjoyable. Fig is dominant. A somewhat strong aroma.

T: Raisin and fig over top a caramel and dark sugar build, with biscuit malt throughout. A tasty little beer. Hints of plum - though not in a dark quadrupel sense. Nicely balanced, though the style demands more of a yeasty build. I do like it. No alcohol comes through.

Mf: Far too light and smooth. Needs more of a presence. Wet and refreshing, but no beer in this style should be refreshing. Way too thin. Weak.

Dr: Quite drinkable. It doesn't hold a candle to other better beers in the style, but I quite like it. Hides its ABV quite well. A great effort from 21st Amendment.

Pours from the can a muddy, reddish brown with a pretty, foamy head that leaves traces of chunky lacing.

Smells of cherry cola, overripe banana peel, and alcohol.

Tastes of cherries, a little vinegar (which I dig), overripe banana peel, with a little solvent.

Medium carbonation, so so in the mouth.

Belgian abbey- style ale in a can? Cool! Unfortunately, the flaws and in this beer make it a one time pour.

A: Pours a murky dark ruby amber with a couple fingers of very dense light brown head that faded into a thick rocky film. Great thick lacing.
S: Hints of caramel, chocolate, wood, mint, and faint coffee. Lots of dark fruits as well.
T: Clean notes of sweet dark fruits, candied fruits, caramel, and hints of coffee amd wood. The finish is sweet with notes of Belgian yeast and mint, and the aftertaste is full of light cocoa powder.
M: Medium body, slightly bitter but clean mouthfeel, creamy carbonation, smooth and drinkable mouthfeel.
O: Not a bad Belgian actually. Good drinking, pretty run of the mill. One of the better 21st A. beers I've had.

Aroma and taste of sweet caramel malt, dried dark fruits, dates, some Belgian yeast, some dark fruity esters and bitter notes. Palate is a medium body, with some lively carbonation. Finishes with some sweet caramel malt followed by some lingering bitter notes for balance, and a slightly dry alcohol ending. Overall a good, balanced and solid brew.

Can poured into a tulip glass

A- Pours a very cloudy, murky, deep caramel brown. With 2 fingers of light tan head that has some staying power and leaves some chunky lacing on the glass.

S- Rich malt character. Lots of dark fruits, hints of vanilla, and other spices. Little bit of alcohol. Lots of vanilla as it warms.

T- Follows nose well. Starts off rich dark fruits, then goes on to spicy Belgian yeast. Finishes with medium dryness.

M- Solid medium body, with a moderate amount of carbonation. The ABV is dry enough that it makes you want another sip quickly.

O- A tasty offering from a can. 21st Amendment really has made a good beer here. Worth trying.

12oz can poured into my Ithaca glass. It poured dark mahogany in color with a dense, tan colored head to it. Nice lacing as I drank it, nice color too.

The aroma has a rich maltiness to it with notes of caramel, brown sugar and a touch of cherry. The Belgian yeast is a noticeable, but seems to play a minor role. There is a touch or rum there as well.

The taste follows through with the rich, sweet malt flavors. I get a lot more of the dark fruit/cherry flavors coming out and a little less caramel and brown sugar. Again, the Belgian yeast is noticeable but more in the background. A little of the alcohol, slight rum like flavor is in the finish.

The mouthfeel is leaning towards the heavier side with carbonation being a little below average. Overall, I thought it was a pretty good beer. I really liked the dark fruit and cherry flavors coming out of the malts. It did feel a little overly sweet at times, but overall i really enjoyed it.

Served from can into a chalice. Poured a deep red-orange with a half finger off-white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, red wine, spice, dark fruit, and plum. The flavor was of sweet malt, fruit, grape, spices, dark fruit, and subtle dark chocolate. It had a light feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a pretty decent brew. This one really reminded me a lot of a more toned down red wine when it came to the aromas given off here. There was a nice spice character here that was very similar to red wine as well. The addition of the dark fruit profile helped to balance this one out. The alcohol flavor was non-existant for me as the dark fruit and spices seemed to cover it up quite nicely. Definitely worth your time to try if you see it in your area.

Aroma: Dark fruity esters up front. Raisin and plum dominate. Definite alcohol warmth detected on the nose. Light earthy/floral hop background notes but very faint.

Appearance: Murky leather brown/brick red pour with low off white head. Appears still in the glass.

Flavor: Sweet bready based that is quickly kicked to the curb by a prickling earthy hop presence, some dark fruity esters (more raisin and plum), and a slightly fusely but enjoyable alcohol flavor. The flavors all play well together and add to the complexity. The finish is clean and dry.

Mouthfeel: Moderate carbonation, medium-light body, and warming alcohol heat.

Overall impression: A definite American version of a Belgian. Hop character seems way forward and alcohol is dominate. Could stand some age. I'm enjoying it now but I can see why some wouldn't consider it a classic.

Appearance - Pours a deep auburn brown with light tan finger width head. Retention is average, leaving behind a thin but consistent lace. There's a considerable amount of sediment throughout.

Smell - Notes of brown sugar and clove; Belgian yeast; almost a 'rum and coke' aroma.

Taste - Sweet and sugary. Notes of dried fruit; fig, raisin and prune. Slightly sour. Plenty of alcohol burn in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Full body; slightly syrupy. Decent carbonation.

Overall - Too sweet and sugary. If I had to describe this in10 words or less it'd be 'A sugary, fruity rum and coke'. Lots of alcohol burn on the back end.

A - pours a beautiful dark brown with 2+ fingers of lush head

S - dark fruits here

T - A little watery but fruity with a little bit of cherry and a good balance with the malt.

O - I haven't had many BSDAs but this drinks really well. Great for the price too. Would definitely buy again.

It pour a hazy deep copper with a creamy light tan head

Fruit esters are the first thing you smell then the malt aromas start to dominate. The malt aromas are kind of nondescript at first then resolve into some carmel and light toffee while the strong esters are of raisins and prunes. It has nice peppery phenols and a soft perfume alcohol aroma.

The first sip is like carmel covered marshmallows from the combination of the sweetness, vanilla, carmel and mouthfeel. There is also the pepper in there along with some of the dark fruit flavors. It has a medium-dry finish

The medium light body and moderately high carbonation combine to create a creaminess and softness on the palate. There is a bit of slickness from the diacetyl probably from the oak chips. The pepper and an odd spiciness start to dominate the other flavors after a few sips; I would really call the spiciness cinnamon and defiantly not clove.

There's a lot going on in this but the flavors muted and unfocused and the oak is barley coming through. It does it the marks for the style of being dark, rich, complex and strong and possible smooth depending on home much pepper you enjoy.
