This one came in as dark as I've ever seen a black ipa/dipa. Good tan head 4/5" on the top. Equal mixture of hops and roasted malt.

Taste brought the hops harder than they were in the aroma. Despite the dark black appearance, you taste hops more than roast. And the body isn't thick and heavy. Covers a strong degree of alcohol quite well. Plenty of hop bitterness, the hop flavors aren't exactly lush tropical ones, but they do provide more flavor than most black dipas.

10% ABV version at the brewery tap during 'Strong Beer Month' on 5th Feb 2013.

Black body with a deep tanned head on top.

Roasted and toasted malts rule the flavours here: the nose and taste completely controlled by those slightly singed malts, dark chocolate being the dominate taste and smell. Hop bitterness however is just below the surface and comes out slowly towards the end of each sip.

OK and different (to a Brit on holiday), not the best beer I had during a long and heavy session in the tap, but certainly not the worst either.

Smell: Grassy/citrusy and piney in equal amounts and just enough coffee to notice. Intense!

Taste: A little coffee up front, a little dark ripe fruits. Some grassy and fruit skin bitterness though the bitterness does have a appreciable espresso bean edge to it. A little more burnt caramel that is unique.

On tap at 21A. Black body with a dense white cap, this beer could body-double for Guinness. The head has strong retention, almost nitro-esque in it's perseverance. Sharp piney hops meet chocolate, charcoal and burnt toast in the nose. Swirling and sniffing brings out more complexity from the hops, orange notes blending with the dark malt to create a beautiful chocolate-orange aroma. Roasted malt is up-front on the palate, but it's quickly met by resiny, piney hops. Malt and hops duel for dominance, leaving a flurry of flavors on the palate; roast, pine, charcoal, grapefruit, dark chocolate, orange peel - the alternation of flavors is complex but almost tiring. Sweetness is nearly non-existent; the black malts contributing little in the way of body or richness, they're more a bittering agent that melds with the hops in the finish to create a bitterness that belies the listed 65 IBUs. This is very good, though the flavor becomes overly intense after a while. Not an ideal session beer, but highly enjoyable in small quantities.

strong beer month? ridiculous. a whole month? rolled into the brewery today for a little taste of 21a. the imperial version of the back in black. or something ridiculous like that. quite dark, almost black, roasty and hoppy, bitterness comes from both the grains and the hops. decent hop aroma, nothing too crazy, the smells are battling each other for dominance b/w the dark malts and the hops. alcohols hiding. had to drink it slow, but that's more a reflection of the shape i was in than the drinkability of the beer.

Another great beer from the dipa fest.

Jet black, but not thick in appearance. Hop aroma and burnt malt resonate. Taste, hops really dominate more than in any black IPA I've ever had. And I've had some good ones. As much as I love Stone Sublime or Dogzilla, this might be the best. I'm amazed how dark the color of the beer is, and yet the zippy hoppiness to it, and that it lacks any noticeable alcohol warming effect or heaviness.

Mouthfeel, so enjoyable, doesn't change into something less desireable, so many flavors running the gamut. Very drinkable, especially for a black ipa.
