Deep gold with brass notes.

Citrus, pine, lightly roasted malt. Bitterness from the hops is bold but in balance.

Yeast, malt, citrus, floral and moderate resin notes.

Rich mouthfeel, full and round. Firm on the palate, with the bitterness becoming a little harsh in the finish of the beer.

Overall, a beer with nice, bold flavor, balance and easy to drink.

Appearance: orange in color with a nice one inch head that lasts a bit before falling to a thick surface foam.

Smell: orange and floral hops are easy to detect by the nose.

Taste: caramel, orange, some fruity sweetness, and a nice floral bitterness create a well balanced beer.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied. Lightly crisp throughout. Short lived aftertaste. Refreshing.

Overall: this is a great pale ale that can be consumed all afternoon and night long. Not overly complex, just a nice solid flavor profile. (509 characters)

Served in a small rocks glass.

A: Scattered lacing. Pale and clear. Light head.

S: Very malty. Spiked with Centennial.

T: A damn solid Pale Ale. Well-balanced with a malty-solid main taste and a dry finish.

M: Full-bodied for the style. Hoppy ending.

O: Very good. Very drinkable. Highly recommend. Will have again. (325 characters)

On-tap at 21st Amendment, in San Francisco.

It's never a bad sign when a beer intended as a refreshing, summertime quencher reminds you of another drink with similar properties, in this case pineapple juice. 5-South not only has the colour of it, but it shares the cloudy complexion too. Believe it or not, however, the beer generates less foam atop; its tiny white suds are fine as grains of sand.

This is a definitively west-coast pale ale in shape, but not in size. This bouquet has all the requisite grapefruit and papaya-like fruitiness but it has virtually none of the bright acidity, bitter disposition or aggressive temperament. Judging by smell, I'm not sure the other Californian hoppy pale ales would let this join in their hoppy pale ale games.

The beer has just enough sweetness to make the hops' notes of pineapple seem believable. And I might have bought into the peach and orange notes as well if a kind of tasteless, toffee-ish maltiness didn't abruptly take over the palate. This has enough caramel to remind me of an English IPA (and a leafy, only lightly acidic bitterness to support that).

To be sure, the beer is American - but just barely. The bitterness definitely needs a booster and while each the Cascade and Centennial hops - two quintessential American varieties - contribute citrus and floral tones, these are somewhat menial and fleet quickly. They do know they could have made this more hoppy without making it any more bitter, right?

Being slightly critical, I'm not sure about 5-South - it's probably too bitter for the average person but it's probably not hoppy enough for the average beer geek. In fairness, the brewpub makes a number of similar beers, some of which are lighter and some of which are stronger, so perhaps for someone out there this one is just right. But that someone isn't me. (1,838 characters)
