Review dated 11/21/2010.

On tap at 21st Amendment.Clear crimson-brown in color with a large lasting tan head. Aroma has a slight mustiness that is a bit off-putting, but besides that it’s sweet malt, dark fruits, and Belgian yeast. Nice Belgian flavor with sweet caramel and spices. Smooth on the palate with medium-plus body. Not a bad beer, if not amazing.

On-tap at 21A

A: The pour is a dark brown/mahogany color with lots of red highlights and an off-white head.

S: The nose opens up with plums, cherries, raisins, and some other miscellaneous dark fruits. Sweet caramel and toffee are present as well, but not all that impressive overall.

T: More bitter than I would have expected for this style of beer. A fairly substantial roasted malt presence along with dark fruits, caramel, and some overdone toffee. Perhaps it's from the fruit notes, but I get a little bit of a port flavor out of this.

M: The body is medium with a smooth, creamy carbonation.

D: A really weird flavor profile. A bit too much roast and bitterness for my liking.

Had this on tap at the 21st Amendment brewpub in San Francisco. Was told this was a dubbel by the bartender. Pours a clear brown colour with a thin ring of off-white head. Some lacing down the glass. Smells of dark fruit and caramel with the Belgian yeast. Some bitterness in the flavour, lots of sweetness. Just a little bit more toned down than many dubbels I've had. Big carbonation.

A - Served a dark black color with a touch of red mixed in and a finger of frothy white head atop. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some lace.

S - Aroma is a mix of sweet rich dark fruits with some prune and date with some rich slightly toasted caramel malts, some Belgian yeast, and a touch of booze.

T - Starts off with some sweet rich dark fruits with some fig, date, and raisin with some lightly roasted caramel malts. Through the middle, some richer and deeper malts come through with some residual sugars and some light Belgian yeast. The finish is a mix of dark fruit sweetness, yeast, and a bit of booze.

M - Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a sweet and warming finish.

D - Very drinkable. Pretty good balance of flavor and the body is big enough to hold all of the flavors and sweetness.

Sampled 11/13/2010 at the brewpub.

Pours black/brown/red, semi clear, tan head, good lacing, decent retention.

Aroma is roast, burnt, fruity, and boozy.

Flavor is slightly more Belgium than the others but also considerably roasty and nutty and burnt (like Papa Park's and Noir De Blanc). I also taste banana, fig, and booze. Could be a good beer if they backed off the roast and booziness. Ample CO2.

Body is medium and drinkable but again, not amazing.

Tick.
