A: Viscous brown pour with about two fingers of light brown head. It looks like a thick beer, but some bubbles make their way through it.
S: The dates (or, at least, some dark fruits) dominate the aroma not unlike a quad. Roasted and caramel malts provide the base. Both overcome any booze and make this a really sweet smelling beer.
T: The taste continues the sweet theme. Dark fruits, and malts, as in the aroma, dominate the taste. The balance is pretty nice, while the sweetness is at the forefront it isn't offensive at all. The finish is roasty.
MF: Not nearly as thick a body as I was expecting, it actually hinted towards watery at some points. Lower amount of carbonation than I would have expected from the pour as well.
O: This was pretty average. I don't know what I expected from a strong ale brewed with dates, but I guess I was hoping for a bit more. I think the body hasn't held up all that well, and maybe the next batch will be a but fuller.

Canned in 2011.
Pours a slightly hazy medium brown with copper highlights and a large, frothy khaki head that slowly dissipates, leaving sticky lacing.
Aroma is laden with dates, figs, prunes, and toffee. Smells very rich.
Flavor reveals green apple, dates, and raisins underlying a lightly toasted, bready caramel malt backbone. Hints of sherry indicate that oxidation may have set in.
Body is a touch full, with fairly low carbonation and moderate alcohol warmth.
The malt backbone is a little lacking for the style, but ester notes are fairly complex. Probably won't age nicely much longer. Metallic notes surface as it warms.

A: Pours a deep ruby red with a light mocha head.
S: Dark fruits and light, but not citric fruits in the nose.
T: Lemon, some resiny pine, dark fruits to start followed by bready malt in the finish. Interesting. Definitely different from English or American barleywines.
M: Full bodied and smooth.
O: Worth a try. It's a good beer, and if nothing else, it's interesting. I've tasted few beers that taste quite like this.
