Purchased on a trip to Toledo, OH. Pours an ink-black color in the middle with very faint hints of dark brown around the edges; tan head fades quick and doesn't leave much lacing, if any at all. Aroma is surprisingly full of sweet malts; roasty on one side with some apple-juice and apple skin sweetness on the other. Light soy sauce-like aromas also come out more and more as the beer warms up - perhaps from the salty, brine-like character that may be from the oyster shells. Initial taste is some char, dark chocolate malts, roasted, and quite smokey. A brine aftertaste arises, a bit salty and seasoned like a musty sea deck - sounds off-putting, but it actually paired quite well with the smokiness of the beer. The liquid smoke flavor hung around until the very end, and an almost chipotle-like spice came out; wasn't very strong, and I may have the spice wrong, but it was pretty tasty. Medium-thick body, a little on the low side of the carbonation scale.

My first "oyster" stout - it was actually very enjoyable. I didn't know what to expect, so I didn't go into this one with high hopes and I was pleasantly surprised. A unique but nice combo of some sea creature flavors, brine, toasted cocoa-like malts, smoke, and light spice - I'd definitely have this one again if offered.

First off, like pretty much everything from 21st Amendment, the graphic design on the can is sweet.

Looking like an 8 ball in a snifter, you'd never know it came from a can. Chocolately head bubbles up quickly and dissipates almost as fast, but leaves some froth around the perimeter.

Licorice, plum, and almost a hint of soy sauce on the nose.

Sweeter than expected, some dark fruit notes. Roasty chocolate finish.

Thin bodied and clean finishing for the style. Just a little lingering roasted malt breath.

For me, Ten Fidy is still the gold standard for canned stouts, but this is a close second.

Dark dark brown, under an equally dark khaki head, that stays, goes all loose and stays some more. Very thick film, collar and bands of fine sheeting.

Light roastyness and toast on the nose.

Smooth in the mouth. This is a tasty stout with dark bread, light chocolate and cafe au lait flourishes. Near 8% and all of it is well hidden. Very enjoyable and easy drinking stout. One of my favorite brews from 21st Amendment. Worth a try if you see 4 packs of this in your local.

Serving glass: Poured from can into Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Near black with thin tan head and light lacing.

Smell: Molasses, chocolate, minerals and dark fruit.

Taste: Rich molasses, chocolate and dark fruit upfront - semi-sweet. After that is when it gets really special, with a finish that includes a roasted bite alongside nice salty and mineral layers from the oyster shells.

Feel: While it is somewhat full bodied, it is much lighter and silkier than I expected. Finish dries off nicely despite the initial sweet taste. The almost 8% abv is completely hidden.

Overall: This is my first Oyster Stout, so I have no exact comparisons. But in terms of the broader Stout category, this is first-rate stuff. This is also the best beer I have had from the solid, but not usually spectular, 21st Amendment.

The oyster stout poured out from a can. It was extremely dark in colour, yet had clarity to it and a reddish hue when held up to the light. Smelled of sweet malt. Clean. Had a rich taste of sweet almond, date, and molasses. Lingering mellow, roasty aftertaste.

Would I buy this beer again? Yes.

Marooned on Hog Island opens to a sweet and slightly salty aroma mixed with more standard stout notes. The stout brings ash, black malt, coffee, tobacco, and chocolate malt, but these are mixed with a briny sweetness, the former from the oyster shells, and the latter adding strong fig, black cherry, blood orange, and even bits of tart raspberry fruit esters. There’s also bits of lemon and lime from the hops, and an underbelly of toast crust and thick brown breads. Added together, these aromas blend wonderfully, and while the stout isn’t as thick and mealy on the nose as could be expected, the unexpected sweet and briny overtones are enticing.

On the tongue, the beer contains stronger stout notes, with ash, tobacco, fresh-ground coffee, chocolate malt, and whole wheat toast crust mixing with caramel, toffee, brown sugar, vanilla, and touches of molasses to form a lovely stout base. Add to this a hint of brine from the oysters, and a selection of fig, prune, raisin, and date dark fruit esters, and the result is very nice. The aftertaste is a more ash-laden continuation of the main mouthful, with threads of sea salt lacing the ash, lingering on the tongue for a long time. Mouthfeel is medium, and carbonation is medium.

Overall, this is an excellent beer, the oyster notes blending well with the stout to emphasize it, rather than overwhelm it, and the stout itself being of obviously high quality, even without the oyster notes. It can tend to be a bit too sweet, and the ashy notes feel as if they needed a slight boost, but this is still very much worth trying.

Poured from a 12 oz. can into a Surly Darkness chalice. Canned on 11-19-2012.

Appearance: Pours pitch black with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid three fingers of tan head with decent retention. Leaves a lot of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A dark and creamy aroma with a subtle spicing. Dark roasted malts with hints of chocolate and coffee beans as well as some burnt caramel, biscuit, toffee, yeast, and smoked malt. Some sweet molasses and hints of anise spicing. Has a subtle salty scent which is probably from the oysters added in. Also some hints of dark cherry, raisin, fig, and prunes. Hops are very subdued. A pretty decent aroma.

Taste: Roasty, creamy, and mildly salty like the aroma hints. Dark roasted malts with a taste of rich chocolate, coffee beans, cream, burnt caramel malt, toffee, biscuit, smoke, and yeast. A moderate sweet taste of molasses and some subtle spices including molasses. Undertones of dark fruits with notes of fig, raisin, prune, and dark cherry. The salty taste from the oysters is somewhat light but noticeable. A pretty solid taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Very creamy and moderately sweet and slick. Very smooth.

Overall: A pretty solid stout. Nice creamy dark flavors and the oysters add a interesting element.

ST: 12oz can poured into a pint glass.

A: Dark, near black with a red tints and a half-a-fingernail slightly brown head.

S: Cream, mineral, smoke, burnt malt, creamy coffee.

T: Starts with sweet chocolate nibs, then dark bitter chocolate with a hint of smoke and coffee, followed by sweet grilled oyster, and it finishes with a slight bitterness and the taste of gritty oyster shell.

M: Medium, smooth, creamy, dry on the finish.

O: A very tasty beer with a slight hard edge of mineral bordering on metal. Balanced well, the sweetness does not overtake the beer. This is a great stout.

I'm almost beginning to think oyster stout should be its own style; then again, do we make a style out of every element put into a beer (in this case, a sub-style, since I've only seen oyster in stouts). Maybe when oyster becomes as commonly used as pumpkin. Regardless, 21A does a good job with the information, giving the entire backstory on the can. I also appreciate that they really do give credit where it's due as a collaborative effort with Hog Island Oyster co., being referenced in the info, in the description ("Stout brewed with Hog Island sweetwater oyster shells"), and in including the companies logo along with theirs on the side of the can. Kudos to class.

It's not quite a black brew, being appropriately dark for the style and allowing a deep brown hue through the thickness. They're not getting carried away by giving it the body of a Russian, and they shouldn't. The beer grows a nice, creamy light brown head nearly two fingers tall that retains itself for several minutes and fades to a foam, but never quite entirely. On the way down, it leaves a thick layer of lacing at the top and drops rings and spotting between to just past halfway down the glass. This is a beer with which I might be torn between 4.0 and 4.5, so it's also my first beer with a 4.25 appearance. It's the little things,
The aroma is very much to style with nothing off-putting. The few oyster stouts I've had tend toward a predictable saltiness and a metallic element one might expect, the best ones doing well to overcome them but still perhaps almost giving off those notes, or keeping them to a minimum. I think this is where it was a fantastic idea to use the shells, just giving this beer a bit of the overall effect without the weirdness that may accompany. Some might want a little more oyster, and I can understand that; it ends up being very subtle. But it's better than overdone, and it meshes well. In both the aroma and the flavor, I assume chocolate malts are used as I get that note with just a light accompanying sweetness that's not too much to blend well. The roasty element is also there. This beer is a bit earthy and, while it's not too sweet, it's also not charred or bitter. In fact, it's very well-rounded. It might have higher ratings if it were EXTREME or if it were heavier, but in fact it's got as much balance as I think it could, is well-rounded, and is not light but mild while still being flavorful. "Stout" doesn't mean "huge", and I think they nailed it. Again, the only thing is that some might expect just a bit more oyster.
The mouthfeel is good, on the less extreme side but plenty full-bodied with a nice thickness that isn't choking. It has just the right, low level of crispness that's enough to add some life, and the underlying smoothness is good. A little alcohol peeks out and seems to thin it toward the end of the sip, but doesn't do much damage.

A: Pours a dark brown color with a very small head that quickly dissipates to a thin ring on top. Streaky lacing down the sides.

S: A good bit of chocolate with some faint roast and dark fruit. Just a touch of salt.

T: Sweet chocolate with some dark fruit in the middle, some raisin and plum. Not overly salty, just a pinch near the end.

M: Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: Was expecting it to be a bit more salty/briny, but it probably would have been a bit harder to drink.

A: Very close to black with a moderate sized light brown fine textured head. Lace is spotty and on the move.

S: Sweet, clean, caramel, cocoa, and yes, oceany. Not sure what I would call it if I didn't know about the oysters. Very refreshing aroma for a stout. Soft around the edges... Milk-like.

T: Taste has a nice pile of creamy caramel, lactose sweetness, and light bitterness. Caramel, cocoa, some coffee, toffee, pine. Doesn't taste salty but there something extra going on that works rather well with this beer....perhaps the oysters again. Milk stout meets salt water toffee.

M: Velvety smooth, soft, nice very fine carbonation levels, and well coating. Leaves a tingly bitterness behind combined possibly with alcohol warming.

O: This is a pretty great stout. I like what they have going on in this.

Straight from the can. Turns the rim of the can nice and dark. Strong coffee/chocolate flavor that melts into lighter roasted notes that finishes between a perfect blend of sweet and bitter. Oyster flavor is not apparent, or either contributes in a manner I am unable to pick up in. Overall impression is this is a very tasty easy drinking stout that helps me melt into the couch on a nice brisk fall evening, don't really care if I can't taste oysters because it taste so damn good without any sliminess.

Pours a very dark black with some red around the edges. There's a thick quarter of an inch of soft, brownish head atop which fades to a thin lacing in a few seconds. The aroma is a bit odd. There are some faint notes of coffee and roasted malts with some very faint underlying chocolate. What makes it odd for me is that I can actually smell something akin to fresh shellfish. The flavor opens up with dark fruit notes like raisins and dates. Then there is some chocolate, caramel and black licorice. Throughout all of these other more dominant notes, there are the typical roasted malt notes. The finish is a bit bitter and minerally and lingers on the palate. This is a full bodied beer with good carbonation.

This is definitely a different stout. It's not like your typical stout that is dominated by roasted malts. This one is unique but nonetheless delicious. I recommend this anyone who loves good beer and wants something a tad different.

Can into Snifter
Pours a white head, very dark body. Chocolate dominates the nose. The mouthfeel is very thin, drinks more like a low 5% rather than a stout just shy of 8%. I can't detect the oyster, but a bitter chocolate taste is definitely there. Very drinkable, especially considering the alc/vol. 21st Ammendment is a solid brewery and this reinforces my belief.

Picked this up in NC over the holidays...

Pours mahogany with 3+ fingers of mocha colored head. Good lacing & average head retention

S: Chocolate, slight roastyness, fades out somewhat as this warms, bummer...

T: Big time roastyness, a little bit of coffee, plum & baker's chocolate up front. Dark fruit & roastyness play off against each other as this warms, some chocolate & woody hops sneak in as well. Finishes dry, roasty, with a modicum of charcoal

MF: Fairly smooth carbonation , medium bodied, thickens up a bit as this warms

A nice roasty stout that pleased me quite a bit, ABV is concealed nicely

12oz can. Pours a deep amber/near brown, with a several fingers of mocha head. Retains well, leaving back a good bit of sticky lace. The aroma smells of cocoa, coffee, ripe citrus and some mineral notes. Pretty straight forward. The taste is similar, with chocolate and light caramel sweetness, a twang of ripe citrus flavor, light earthy bitterness and roasted malts that leave this burnt in the finish. Like the nose, a light briny mineral character is present. Medium bodied with some prickliness up front that then gives way to more of a bubbly and creamy feel. This was decent. It’s certainly better than average but not exactly special enough to stand out either. It's still worth a look.

Smells of rich chocolate mousse or pot de creme with a hint of booze that opens up into a raisiny port-like impression as it warms. The flavor doesn't veer far from the aroma as it begins with the same rich chocolatey quality. It starts sweet, but the mid-palate is smooth and creamy with a drying and very slightly roasted finish. Delicious and dangerously drinkable for its weighty 7.9% ABV. Might be my favorite oyster stout.

Nice little tale of two unhappy swabies on the packaging. A 21st Amendment tradition of putting stories on their beer. They bring us a different stout, an oyster stout. Not many of those around. Pours dark with a dense two fingered head that had great retention before settling to a thick cap. Nice amount of lacing is left down the glass.

Nice amount of roasted malt in the aroma. A touch of smoke and something faint that is reminiscent of the ocean.

Not as roasted in flavor as I thought it would be. More of an Irish stout type of flavor with a slight salinity in the finish. Dry with some dark bread and mocha notes. Some earthy notes rounds things out. No sign of alcohol or warmth.

Medium body that is deceptively easy to drink with the ABV this beer carries. Nice carbonation gives the beer a pleasant texture.

I thouroughly enjoyed this stout. Kudos to 21st Amendment to bring something different to the market instead of just another over-hopped, big, expensive stout.

A- caramel, coffee, pours into a glass smoothly with a mild head, lighter color at the bottom but that could be the glass (this is my first beer review).

S- Caramel for sure. The sea salt aroma blowing in the wind on the rocks on the ocean shore on Hog Island, and some vegetal notes as well. Another reviewer said he's 'straining to get a good sense of the aroma'

T- Coffee, toffee, cayenne, oyster shell fruit jelly.

M- Smooth with a gentle fuzz that burps up later. Could use a little more body.

Happy I was able to try this beer and I certainly recommend it. The alcohol from this one is creeping up on me. I'm just starting to get 'into beer'. Thanks for reading!

A- pours pitch black with a small foamy tan head with somewhat short retention, leaving just a reign after settling

S- smoky charred malt gives some dried meat character, some mineral notes, a bit woody with a touch of chocolate

T- surprising fruity notes with a bit of fig, mid-palate is slightly sweet with roasted malts and chocolate. The finish is mineraly, giving it a slight salty feel on the tongue, smoky and sweet-yet-dry on the finish

M- medium body and carbonation, foamy-turned-creamy mouthfeel with a smooth finish. Alcohol is barely noticeable

O- easy drinking, the oysters give it an interesting mineral flavor and finish. Worth a try once.

12oz can. Not overly thick looking, but black pour. No light gets through. Half finger of cream colored head. Retained and stuck to the glass a bit.

Aroma, light roast, caramel, chocolate and an earthy malt. Some cream.

Taste, roast malt up front, dark chocolate. Heavy minerally and even some salt like presence. Cocoa, peat, wood. Finishes with a hint of anise.

Solidly medium body. Carbonation is just barely higher than I would think ideal. No abv heat and very drinkable.
The Porterhouse and Harpoon oyster stouts are my only 2 to compare to this and this is easily as good as those. Definetely worth a try.

A: Sits a dense black in the vessel with a one finger dark khaki head with a frothy whipped consistency. Short retention span. Leaves a speckled band lacing.

S: Aroma is light, oyster shells, light roast. The oyster presence is low, wish it was more meaty, then shelly, and lacked a saltiness.

T: Creamy milky roastiness, some hard shell oyster hints. Smooth roast, again wish it had more of a oyster kick, was subtle, and more of a background ambience rather a focal point. The oyster shells did show a bit more later in the drink and with some warming.

M: silky, very smooth and slick, milk stout like, slippery texture and a quiet demeanor of carbonation.

O: Overall the flavor isnt bad, its just a bit middle of the road and safe. If youre gonna do a wild concept beer, dont half ass it, go all out with the oysters otherwise its just a shallow safe attempt to be daring.

12 ounce can, canned on 11/19/12 (printed on bottom of can). Served in a pint glass, the beer pours dark brown/black with a half inch tan head. Head retention and lacing are both decent enough. The brew smells like chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, and some oyster shell/brine. I think the taste is pretty much just like the aroma, but the oyster shell/brine salty flavor is stronger in comparison. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit coating with a moderate amount of carbonation. I think it's a good overall brew, definitely worth a try if you've never had it before. $8.99 a 4-pack.

A: pours black with a finger of khaki head that fades into a thin ring with a little lacing.

S: roasted malts with mild chocolate and sweet cocoa. There are also some nutty and slight coffee aromas.

T: roasted malts here as well with cocoa and semi-sweet chcolate. There are some smokey and char fla ors toward the finish that is lightly bitter.

M: medium-thick body with medium carbonation, this beer is carbonated enough to avoid being watery.

O: an enjoyable beer overall. They oysters don't really come through, but it's a solid stout nonetheless.

Poured from the can into a Walking Man shaker pint. One finger of tan head and some minor lacing. Smell is coffee, dark chocolate, and a whiff of sea breeze.
Taste is rich espresso with maybe a square of dark chocolate melted into it. Never tasted any real hop character within but plenty bitter from whatever source.
Mouthfeel was medium thick with minor carbonation. Leaves a medium dry bitter finish.
Overall a tasty brew and the alcohol is well hidden. As one who has eaten his fair share of fresh oysters both cooked and raw this beer only showed the oyster ingredient in the aroma. So oyster haters need not fear this stout. One of 21st Amendments better beers.
