Tasted this beer on tap in a medieval-themed restaurant in Cesky Krumlov three weeks ago. I was so happy to see a different beer on offer after realising most restaurants and pubs in that area are dominated by Pilsner Urquell and Budweiser Budvar (apart from the local pivovar Eggenberg)... Nice for a change.

The 12% abv Golden Lager pours a light golden hue, with a gradually disappearing white beer head, until no trace of it at all. BTW, I found out that the barmen in most pubs I'd been to in the Czech Republic liked to wet the glasses before pouring beer straight from the taps. Is it really the way it should be served? I really doubt it, but I can see their point: to pour the beers as fast as possible. But in most cases the beers were still served under-measured, and in several cases it was so serious I dared to confront the waiters/waitresses for top-up...

The nose is nice and complex, with a very delicately floral and herbal, almost lavender-like, aroma, lightly buttery note and bready maltiness, plus lightly acidic, honeyish aroma. Not a single element is too assertive, while a quite elegant hop aroma sustains throughout. The taste has lightly acidic, lime-like lager malt flavour upfront, followed by a softly, sweetened-lavender-mead like floral flavour at the back, and a mildly bitter-sweet, crisply bitter finish. Overall it's a soft, very easy-drinking lager with a rather nice balance.

Nice floral hops. Toasty, honeyed flavour, dry and softly textured, subtle in every way, but very nice and enjoyable, nice bitterness on the finish, beautifully soft texture (obviously they use a soft water), beautiful for session drinking, bitterness that makes you want more, lovely (Bottle-GBBF 03')

500 cl bottle. Golden-yellow, rather pale. Smell is complex, with hoppy and herbal tones present. Start is malty-yeasty with good hop bitterness. Body firm, well-balanced, on the bitter side. Aftertaste bittersour.

An interesting version of Pilsner, but not a classic. Certainly worth a try.

BB 03-04-06. Nice head and a golden and cristal clear beer. Nose is good maltyness with fine saaz like flowery hopnose. Quiet papery aswell though. Taste is very pilsner like and quiet bitter in aftertaste. Good balanced and great maltyness for this brew and fine hopping makes sweetness unnoticable if it has any. Shows some oxidation also and bet it's a lot better fresh. Still an enjoyable beer that runs down just fine.

Back story: When I finished my masters degree in the Summer of 2012, friends gave me a book on 50 beers to drink before you die. Shortly after, I vistied the Czech Republic with my girlfriend and brought back this beer, because it was in the book. Well, I never got around to reviewing it. Well, I was very surprised to pull it out, look at the date and see that it was "best before January 2013". Well, can't hurt, right?

Apperance: Golden with slight chill haze from standing in the fridge for the past 6+ months. Non-existent head, but leaves a few laces.

Aroma: Honey. Honey. Honey. Smells like my one and only batch of mead I ever did.

Taste: On the roasted side for a pilsner, which I like. Not your average Carlsberg, Budweiser, or whatever you have in your country. On the malty scale we are balanced towards sweetness, and not a lot of bitterness at all.

A good Czech style pils thanks to Georgina's trip back home. Good carbonation and malting. Light mouthfeel, not much in wasy of taste other than some sweetness. Drying aftertaste. No aroma to speak of. Good head. Unpasteurized. Session beer. Easy drink.

A: Pours a golden color with a small head that fades to bits of lacing.

S: Aroma of grain, mild malt sweetness and a light trace of hops.

T: Taste has an initial bitterness with a bit of malt sweetness and slightly grainy. Bitterness continues to a fairly clean finish.

F: Light body, crisp and somewhat refreshing. Beer seem to have a gritty texture about it.

O: Decent beer, but sort of a middle of the road beer for the style.

500ml bottle bought from GapWines, Belfast...

Poured a nice crystal clear coppery yellow colour. White head poured pretty small then faded quickly to very light layer. Lots of big carbonation bubbles shoot to the surface... no lacing...

Aroma - Light sweet malts, some spicy fruits (lemons, oranges, pears), biscuity notes, some graininess, peppery hops, some floral honey sweetness, perfumey, herbal traces...

Taste – Nice light spicy fruits (lemons, apples, pears), good hop bitterness cuts through the sweet malts, honey, some saltiness, metallic notes, peppery, light corn notes, some floral notes...

Feel - Sharp initially then becomes smoother... light bodied... Pretty refreshing and drinkable although maybe becomes a little too sweet after a while..

Overall - A pretty good pilsener - nothing spectacular but worth a try...

This pours a cloudy light brown color. There’s not much of an aroma, just that faded-hop musty-honey-sweetness aroma in imported pilsners. Which is to say, faded.

The flavor isn’t too bad. It’s light, with a rounded sweetness. That honeyed note is present, along with a surprising crispness. The lager yeast gives some fruity-sweet hints as well. Nothing completely developed, but it ends on an enjoyable note for what could have been an otherwise forgettable beer.

It has a grassy and odd earthy pils aroma. The body is a transparent but a little darker than average gold color. The average carbonation in the body makes for an even and nice white head and lace. It has a fruity taste for a pilsner. There are some citrus and other different fruit like flavors. It is pretty light as far as the body is concerned. It is easy to drink and refreshing.

An extremely standard Czech Pilsner. Good but not fantastic.

Pours a very lively gold with a quickly dissapearing head. No discernable lacing, but that could have been because of some water on my mug.

Smell was mostly malty.

Flavor had little to no malts to speak of. Flavor was almost entirely subdued Saaz like Hops. Very spicy, a little bitter. Clean and refreshing, but not altogether amazing.

Mouth is far too carbonated, too much bite.

A decent session beer but little else.

Comes in a .5 liter Euro-style bottle, small expiration date at the bottom. White lable with a simple picture of hops + text, states the brewery was born in 1379!

After already sampling the Prezident and the Dark Lager, I have to say I'm dissapointed. Looks pretty, like a pilsner should, but has no distinct smell. Taste screams average after having the loaded with spice Prezident. A little hoppy and a little malty, but thats it. Still, this is a little better then some of the Czech macros.

The colour is medium straw yellow. The two finger head is warm white; it leaves some lacing on the glass.

The smell got notes of margarine, flowery hops, some minerals and bitterness.

The taste is rather sweet with hints of minerals and some anonymous hops. The aftertaste is light with some flowery hints.

The carbonation is medium strong; the liquid is quite light.

A run-of-the-mill Czech pilsner.

Standard reusable brown Czech bottle. Bohemia Regent in gothic green font, with a red stylised flower and bronze coins.

Partially my fault, but there's massive fizz and overspill on opening, almost made problems for my little travel keyboard. Pours a yellow-gold colour, with a lot of fizzy head that bubbles down to almost nothing at all. Sticky around the edges though, and it leaves decent lacing. Definitely lots of carbonation, looks over bubbly.

Oooh. Nasty caramel/butterscotch nose, with a hint of seawater, or perhaps sewerage. Actually, seawater is pretty much spot on as far as I can tell. No fragrance, no hoppiness, and the sweetness is overpowering.

The palate, at least, isn't really offensive, but it's pretty bland. Slightly artificial banana character, and a late hit of tinny metallic bitterness, but otherwise very little. Mouthfeel is better than I expected - I expected prickly overcarbonation, but this is quite smooth, still leaving the palate rather flat though.

This isn't great, but on the whole, when you look at it from a distance, it's not too bad. Hold your nose while you're drinking it and you could probably down a couple.

Poured medium gold from the bottle, with a very lively head, that took some taming! Aroma was not very good, strange mixture (as the below reviewer describes) grassy but strange seaweed or stagnant water smell, rather off putting. Taste was not much better, stagnant water, seemed almost to have a hint of salt in it, some hop bitternesss in the finish, but not very pleasant at all to my taste. I normally really enjoy Czech pilsners, but this was simply very poor and nothing like what I would have expected. Even worse that some of the UK 'brewed under licence' lagers and pilsners! Worth avoiding in my opinion.

Golden appearance, without bubbles, clean. White foam, not very compact.
Smell: some maltiness and hoppyyness, light and stale. Nothing remarkable. Maybe a hint of oxidation (wet cardboard).
Same for the taste, again malt, hop. Traces.
Slightly better aftertaste, with some decent hop.
