look: 3.5 | smell: 3 | taste: 3 | feel: 3 | overall: 4

Presentation: Served in a 0.5l branded mug at Restaurant Leibniz-Klause in Berlin.

Appearance: Pale golden/yellow beer with an ample creamy foam lace.

Taste: Quite herbally with a faint dose of anise in the back. Thin, low sweetness. Hops takeover with a coarse, earthy, rindy, citrus peel flavour that builds to a semi-astringent level. Dry finish.

Notes: An okay pils. Some of the flavours seemed a bit odd though, out of place and balance ... or rather forced. Especially the hops -- hop extract?

Used this beer to wash down my plate Königsberger Klopse ...

Presentation: 11.2 oz green long neck bottle with a freshness date on the front label. This is one of those durable glass bottles that are reused.

Appearance: Pale yellow and crystal clear with a light webbing of white lace all the way down the glass.

Smell: Grassy hop, honey and herb in the aroma … quite clean.

Taste: Light to medium in body with a bold crispness. Big accent of hops, noble hops without a doubt … very soft but not with out giving a spicy herbal bitterness first. A little thin on the malt but it makes up ground with a pale bready flavour and snappy graininess. Finishes on the dry side with a clean grainy and hoppy palate.

Notes: Definitely a thirst quencher pils, light enough to suck down on a very hot day while sweating at the bbq grilling some turkey sausages to pair with the next Jever.

a: three and a half fingers of fast-dissipating off-white head on top of a transparent pale yellow body

s: grassy crackery malts, slight citrus. pretty strong and inviting aroma here

t: follows the nose. malts all around (bread, crackers), as well as a prominent herbal hop bitterness that's hard to ignore and nears being harsh. hints of lemony citrus notes. shy spice flavours. overall this is clean and very hoppy

500 mL can picked up at the LCBO; best before June 18 2015. Served well-chilled.

Pours a clear, pale straw-yellow colour, topped with one finger of sparkling, fizzy white head that wastes no time fizzling itself right out of existence. A narrow collar and a swath of lace remain - it's a pretty typical-looking Euro lager. The aroma is inviting enough, and certainly appropriate for the style - lots of grainy, crackery pale malts, some honey sweetness, and a wisp of grassy hops. Nothing fancy, but it works for me...

The same can be said of the flavour profile - this is a pretty standard pils with no real surprises or serious flaws to discuss. Grainy pale malts dominate at first; somewhat bready or biscuity, with a light note of lemon. The finish is where the undoubtedly noble hop bill starts to shine - quite grassy, almost herbaceous, with a mildly skunky feel about them. Finishes dry. Light-bodied and easy to drink, with crisp, biting carbonation of the sort you'd expect from a pale lager.

Final Grade: 3.56, a B grade. Jever Pilsener is refreshing, inoffensive, and highly sessionable - in essence, a prototypical German pils. An otherwise unremarkable beer, but like most German pilseners imported into this province, it's still pretty good value for the price point. That reason alone means I will probably return to it in the future. A middle-of-the-road lager that shouldn't ruffle too many feathers.

Bottle purchased and poured into a generic pint glass at Magpie Irish Pub in Rochester, NY.

After looking at the bottle, it looks like it best by last year. Uh oh. Let's see how it tastes anyway, and if it held up.

It pours a very clear light yellow, with some amber tinges. There is barely any head, and barely any lacing.

Smells very faint, like some grassy hops, some slight skunk, and a little bit of sweetness.

The taste is similar, and a bit stronger. There is a pleasant classic pilsner hop bite up front, slightly peppery and grassy, but the finish on the beer just doesn't quite work- the malt is a bit too sweet, and there's some slight skunk flavor.

Light bodied, crisp mouthfeel, medium carbonation, very drinkable.

This was one was just ok- had some good elements up front- the hop flavors- but finished weak, with clearly old malt flavors and some skunkiness.
