A- golden straw with a pure white head. Not as lively looking as other Pilseners I've had. Anyway, nice head retention and great lacing.

S- biscuity grain, a little skunky. Not a good start here.

T- better than the smell. A little sweeter than expected, with a decent herbal/spicy hop bitterness. Really pleasant actually.

M- light, gentle carbonation, refreshing. The finish is watery.

O- aside from being light struck, it wasn't bad.

DATE TASTED: April 26, 2014... GLASSWARE: Jever pokal... OCCASION: revisiting an old favorite... APPEARANCE: misty, murky golden yellow body; rocky, sporadic white head laces with wispy tentacles; medium effervescence... AROMA: holy Hallertau! metallic iron hammer a la Thor or a nine-iron to the nostrils--subtler hints of fragrant apple and pear with a bit of dough...a stronger, more forceful pilsner... PALATE: medium-bodied, crisp, almost biting mouthfeel--softens at the finish; highly drinkable, with a more lagerish body than expected...TASTE: apple/pear and good ol' Hallertau; a rather simple formula that also gives off fragrant waves of other fruits... OVERALL: a pleasant variation on the Bavarian theme--a pilsner that is a bit less clean and crisp, but retains enough of its style to cleanse and pucker; refreshing yet substantial...

11.2 oz bottle was poured into a pilsner glass.

Appearance: A one finger head was poured that reduced to a thin layer. It is a golden straw yellow with great clarity and vision of bubbles coming up through the glass.

Smell: Skunky lager yeast, pilsner malts, some sweetness, herbal, and grassy.

Taste: Pilsner malts, layer yeast, herbal, spicy, grassy, a little sweet, and some bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Crisp, refreshing, a little dry, light, and medium to high carbonation.

Overall: Easy drinking and traditional pilsner. A little more skunkiness than I would like, but still and enjoyable beer.

Jever Pilsener has the smogginess of a downtown core in summertime rush-hour but maintains a light and bright lemony complexion all the same. The beer looks somewhat blanched, as if it were left in the sun to dry out (what foreshadowing!). Its head is so soapy you'd think someone washed their hands in your glass; some of the suds stick while others don't.

Some of the bottles in this six-pack were so heavily light-struck you would have needed a forensics team to prove what they contained was in fact beer. My glass smells as though it were sprayed by a skunk. Somewhere in the backdrop of this particular sample, however, are the familiar scents of grainy pilsner malt and grassy hops. It may not be a lost cause after all...

Not entirely, anyhow. The flavour, likewise, doesn't stand tall with the hefty grain bill and zestful hoppiness of a proud German pilsner, but there's enough biscuity malt and grassiness to give some indication of its Lower Saxon roots. If not for that particularly off-putting combination of 3-methyl-2-butene-1-thiol, I reckon this could be a refreshing, very serviceable pils.

When car companies discover a defect in their parts or models they consult an actuary to calculate whether it'd be more financially advisable to recall the product or just pay out whatever lawsuits may ensue. Corporate owned breweries often have a similar discussion with their marketing departments: 'How much will green bottles affect our beer' versus 'how much extra beer will we sell if we use them'?

All too often unfortunately, the conclusion is to go ahead with it even despite the well-known fact that green glass can have awful consequences for delicate, light-bodied lagers. Sadly enough there's a good percentage of the population who, having only tried industrial import, actually perceive this skunkiness as a sign of quality! It's not. And Jever should know better.
