Weird. I mean really weird. I have drank almost every beer produced by Fantome. Most are odd, some are plain insane but this...this might just take the cake.

Pours a shiny orange with a bubbly white head and huge carbonation streams into a small wine glass provided kindly by the Brussels Marriott Renaissance. Bottle purchased at Beer Mania and consumed in August of 2008.

Aroma is like a tomato-basil wheat thin. Wet rice and thyme come next and then...rotten meat. Damn this is funky.

Taste is like a piece of day old pepperoni pizza that has been sitting on the cardboard box all night in a pool of stale natty ice that then melds with cotton mouth booze breath coming out of your mouth permeating over the lip you cut open getting bit while kissing a girl you can't quite remember.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, creamy, almost...powdery with no hint of hops or alcohol.

Drinkability: um...well...uh...no. An experiment gone bad...then again, if you liked that gimmicky pizza beer, you will love this.

From a 750ml green bottle with crown cap and cork. Many thanks to Patrick.

Apperance: Orange beer with a tiny white foam. A small ring around the glass.

Smell: Aromas of honey mead are perceptible. Some rancio and oxidation.

Taste: Some spices and acidity. The oxidation is way too present.

Mouthfell: Medium-bodied and easy drinking.

Overall: This beer is going downhill. It has better days.

Thanks Matt for adding to the crazy and thorough list of Fantome beers all sampled side-by-side at a recent Fantome tasting. Served in a Fantome tulip, this thing got USED.

Beer is yellow, hazy, lazy wispy head, small bubbles some lacing, moderate carbonation.

Aroma is like a pizza, oh there's oregano in this one? I would have never guessed, actually tha'ts all it smells like.

Beer is light and quite spicy in the sense that there is a lot of oregano in there. Very strong. The finish is a little dry, this was one of the "weird" ones there for sure, interesting but not a repeat for me. What's that? It's retired? OK, good.

Thanks to Huhzubendah for opening this one at the Fantome tasting. Served in a Fantome tulip.

Pours a hazy light golden color with a short white head. Light lacing. The nose has a very strong oregano component with some grain behind that. Not much though. Basically just the oregano with a bit of other spice. Flavor isn't quite as heavy on oregano. Light body. Strange, but good.

From 11/05/11 notes. Bottle shared by Huhzubendah at the mega-Fantome tasting. Poured from a 750ml bottle into my Cigar City snifter.

a - Pours a transparent straw yellow color with two inches of whtie head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of oregano, spices, yeast, wood, earthy notes, musty and floral notes. It's crazy how much this smells like oregano; never had anything like it.

t - Tastes of oregano, pizza, spices, yeast, floral notes, light hay and funk, grass and earthy notes. Again, oregano dominates. Very interesting.

m - Medium body and low carbonation.

o - Overall a very unique beer; one of the craziest and most unique beers I've ever had. It smells and tastes just like oregano, and would be itneresting to have with some pasta or pizza. I don't think I could necessarily drink more than a few ounces of this one, but it was very cool to try.

Shared at the Fantôme themed tasting.

Sampled alongside twenty other Fantôme beers.

The beer appears a hazy, golden yellow color, with a half inch or so of white head. The aroma is dominated by oregano. I can't say I have encountered a beer like this before.

Oregano takes center stage, and the beer has a flavor akin to pizza. This guy likes pizza, and Fleur de Bomal is well crafted, so I happen to enjoy this beer. On the other hand, this is definitely not for everyone. An odd beer for sure. Other saison characteristics are there (funk, yeast, fruit, floral notes, etc.), but are veiled behind an onslaught of oregano.

Light to medium in body with solid carbonation. Lingering herbal flavors on the palate.

Overall, a truly interesting and creative beer. I definitely recommend trying it, should you have the opportunity.

750ml bottle poured into a matching Fantome Tulip. This brew appears a clear golden yellow color. Very light hints of orange in the body with 2 fingers worth of creamy white fluff sitting across the top. The cap recedes leaving patches of lacework on the glass. A light swirl revives a finger of head back to the surface.

The smell of this brew is fresh like your kitchen spice cabinet just exploded. It is herbal and spicy with a bright character of something very familiar. I had no choice, I opened up our spice cabinet and went to the first thing I thought. Is that basil in this brew? Nope. How about oregano? Absolutely. The herbal aspect of oregano hits the nose with a little bit of a peppery quality as well. Collectively it forms in the nose with a brightness almost minty aspect somewhat like menthol. The expected saison yeast character of clovey quality is present but very much an afterthought. As the brew warms, it picks up a bit of cheesy funk.

The taste is fresh and herbal with oregano and a lighter flavoring of something that is almost cooling inside the mouth like mint or menthol. Even a hint of something vaguely reminiscent of spearmint gum is present. The yeast is present with a light peppery quality as well as a spice like cloves. The herbal contribution of oregano just persists from start to finish inside the mouth. While the character is loud and clear, I dont find it to be overbearing or distracting at all. In fact, in a really strange way I found this brew exceptional. I wonder how it would have paired with pizza. The finish is quite dry whih really ups the overall drinkability.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest level of carbonation. If you enjoy fresh herbal spices (especially oregano) you will love this beer. The alcohol was seemingly nonexistent even after the brew exceeded ideal temperature. This was a solid offering in my opinion that was received with mixed emotions across the table when I shared it with friends. In a very cynical way, I'm glad the others didn't enjoy this so I could have a second full pour all to myself!

A 750ml shared with some fellow BAs. A mountain of over carbonation. This one was a gusher. Smell is strange. Very strong oregano smell. Taste is a bit off-putting. Taste like a pizza. Nice (over) carbonation. I love Fantome but I am not sure I would reach for this one again. Beer and oregano don't seem to mix.

Sampled August 2010
A solid pour into my 25cl tulip glass produces an almost two-finger thick, pale tan colored head. The beer is an almost opaque honey color that shows a hazed, orange tinged, straw color when held up to the light. The aroma smells of herbal honey and wild flowers from a distance, but definitely smells of oregano when you take a sniff up close. It is still backed by a nice honey-like note that accentuates notes of ripe pears and juicy honey-dew melons. A deeper draft of the nose yields a huge, crystallized honey character that accentuates a huge sweetness at the end of the aroma; this contrasts nicely with the beginning of each smell that has that oregano almost savory character to it. As the beer warms up quite a bit the up front fruitiness becomes much more apparent, but still the expressive, crystallized honey note is buoyantly noticeable if you dig for it.

Quite a bit drier than the honey-rich nose suggested, but I was fully expecting this here, the beer also finishes with a light lactic tartness that seems to be just settling in. Dry, herbal honey-like notes up front meld into a savory, oregano character in the middle. The oregano manages to disappear for a short while in the near finish, but then comes back on quite persistently in the long, lingering finish. The carbonation on this beer is fairly low for a Belgian beer, much less a Fantome; it is certainly enough to couple with the light medium body though. This has very little if any hop character including no real bitterness; all of this sort of balance seems to be contributed by the oregano. Fruity flavors of Macintosh apples, subtle ripe pear, perhaps a hint of watermelon and some definite green apple are accentuated by various components of this beer.

The oregano was done pretty well here, while it is definitely distinct, it does not overwhelm the rustic Saison that makes up the base of this beer. I am continuously amazed by how intense the honey-like aromatics are in the nose; it makes me wonder how this character got here, is it purely from the fermentation character, does the oregano somehow play a role, and is there actually some honey used in the recipe to help this along (though this last alone would not be fully responsible for how intense this character is in the nose). This is another wonderful, fully rustic beer from Fantome, I can't wait to crack in to the other few bottles that I brought back from Belgium. I am really, really enjoying this beer right now; it isn't perhaps in the bowl me over class of beers, but damn this is one tasty brew. For some reason I like that this label has a whole section on the side for the date to be marked off on but hasn't been used at all :-)

Appearance: Orange straw-golden pour, a bit hazy/murky, leaves behind some decent lacing.

Smell: Typical fantome, smells nearly identical to the regular saison, but with a bit of spice, oregano and basil. No more funky than the regular saison.

Taste: Damn near identical to the regular saison, but with what tastes like oregano on the finish. It is unique and enjoyable.

Mouthfeel: Standard fantome, near-full and near-creamy. Very good. I wish I had a piece of pizza to compliment it.

Drinkable: I love fantome Saison, and this is an interesting variation that I would drink again.

I have had this twice, the first bottle was substantially better than the second.
