This saison poured a cloudy, iced-tea brown color with white foam that settled but clung to the glass a little bit. The smell was lightly tart. The taste was nicely tart with a bit of sourness and very low hop bitterness. The mouthfeel was dry and tart with medium body and medium-low carbonation. The lightly tart taste lingered pleasantly. This was a very nice and drinkable saison.

Enjoyed this beer from Fantome on tap at Red Bones in Boston.

Appearance - Pours into goblet with a full clean white head with high lacing. Body color is clean strong amber with orange marmelade edging.

Aroma - My initial recognition was a fresh water, sandy-bottomed pond. Musty and earthy with hints wild clover flowers.

Taste - Cranberry front, mild fruit middle with clean hop-crabapple finish and nice dry bitterness. The entire follow-through is reminiscent of fresh cut firewood, like sweet wet wood.

Mouth - Full-bodied with good building carbonation in the mouth. Foams and fills the mouth and carries flavors throughout palate.

Drinkability - This works about as well as nature can. Please more.

Oh my, 8%...I couldn't tell. Had on tap at 'bones last evening. Cloudy chesnut when served, it came topped with a filmy tan head. It pretty much stayed the course. I am getting candi sugar, mustiness, and some kriek like notes from the aroma. Medium in mouthfeel, low carbonation, my tasting notes say: barnyard, dried horsesweat...very horseblankety in flavor. There are some krieklike notes (sour), and also some tannins in the finish. Tasty and unique...but I wouldn't want to drink it all day. One is enough.

Went big game hunting for lion with this one on 10/10/2004. 10-oz pour in a rotund and erotically bulbous Fantome glass at the Moan and Dove in Amherst, MA.

One-inch fluff of coated, frenetic head to start. Almost a raspberry-like hue to the pour, but a bit on the lighter side of the color palate. Tulips, other fragrant flowery notes to nose, which was mellowed somewhat by a light malt character. To taste, a biting flower presence, likely dandelion, cuts through everything else that might be offered but that smooths out and slowly the malt develops through the body. This one was hard to quantify, and as the bartender said, “man, that one has a serious identity complex.” Not sure I would choose to have more than one of these during an evening; the sour linger on the tongue might very well wreak havoc on your palate for the rest of the evening.

On tap at Spuyten Duyvil the saturday and at the moan and dove the sunday. lovely weekend! As soon as it's poured, it strikes me as different from the bottled version although with Dany it may just be another batch. I crave for bottles on this version. Shelton Bros have done quite a grand coup getting kegs of this.

The pour is chesnut brownish, very cloudy, mysterious. A gentle off-white ring is thinner than the bottle and the body will later confirm much smaller carbonation level, less fluffiness although still moderately carbonation and close to full bodied.

The nose abunds with belgian farmhouse characteristics, starting from the very peppery yeast which comes out musty with hints of cobwebs, sand.. quite undescribable, maybe even a touch of cat liter, but I swear it's a marvellous contemplative blend. Very earthy, leafy, salty. Notes of apples, caramel, brown sugar.. Complex and satisfying, sense bugging.

Typical fantôme light tartness reaches pinaccles in the abundant mustiness and cement like basement flavors. Very weird. Light astringence, lots of wood and leafy flavors remind me of my beloved speciaal brouwsel.. Terrific.

It doesn't have the appearance and mouthfeel grace of the bottled fantômes, but the flavors are utterly expansive and immensely enjoyable thoroughly. One of the top examples of farmish craft brewing.

A-hazy dark orange color with a good off-white head and decent lacing

S-lemon, wheat bread, earthy, slight funk,slight caramel

T-wheat, grassy, lemon, yeasty funk, apple, clove, mild sweetness, mildly tart finish

F-medium body with moderate carbonation, crisp and a little dry

O-the flavors were an interesting mix,but not as compelling as the regular saison

Appearance- Almost a gusher but not quite. Has pretty good retention as well. The head is a an off-white/very light tan while the body is a dull, medium to dark amber which appears a hazy medium amber when held up to the light. Some lacing is left behind.

Nose- Very subtle but very refined. Very clean smelling. Banana, very light cloves, a suggestion of lemon and apple. Very spring smelling if that means anything. Swirling shows a little bit more of the cloves and gives off a blend of earthiness and ashiness.

Taste- Starts with the fruit esters of the nose- a blend of apple and lemon. Cloves come in pretty strong and impart an ashiness that tends toward a woody bitterness. Some banana on the finish makes this a little bit more bearable. Some honey on the finish. Coriander as well but the cloves are a little much for me at the moment. The woody bitterness even gives off a little earwax. Fortunately, the honey and floral notes counteract this but not enough. A subsequent pour shows a much more mellow clove character with a bitter bite that serves to give the beer more character instead of overwhelming it. A good beer and a competent saison but doesn't really excite me in anyway. Nice balance and integration but it does lack in the presence and complexity departments. Some grain.

Mouthfeel- Light bodied with a good amount of carbonation which really works for this beer. Has some airiness.

Drinkability- Pretty easy going despite the slight distraction of the cloves. Certainly not worth the 16 bucks I paid though. I will not be buying this again.

Overall- A good beer and competent saison with a great beer price tag. Worth a try but if you balk at the cost, you should pass. Not as interesting as the regular Fantome. Definitely a bit boring.

750 ml poured into Brasserie D'Achouffe tullip glass

A: Pours a cloudy dark orange color with a huge light tan/off white head that dissipated to a one finger head made from medium to small size bubbles with a creamy patch in the center. Good lacing but doesn't last long and slowly makes its way back down to the foam and into the beer, minus a few patches. Given a minute or two, the head dissolved into a thin even layer but never completely gone. not a bad looking beer, definitely darker than I was expecting.

S: Not as Fantome funky as other beers but it has a cheese like, almost an earthy raw grain but also hay like funk to it. The aroma reminds me of a brew day during the mash in, its warm from the hot mash and the aroma of grain fills the air. That's the feel I get from this funky brew. A tad bit floral and maybe spice but very earthy and hay like to me.

T: First thing that came to mind was how clean and non-fantome this beer is. Kinda disappointing to not have any of that weirdness that I'm so used to and have grown to love. A bit warming from the abv. Beer has a satisfying fruitiness with an herbal touch to it with a bit of spice in the background. Finishes with a similar earthy hay like almost grain like maltiness that is nice. Medium carbonation makes for a light tartness and refreshing dryness, easy to drink and refreshing. Bitterness is almost non-existent but works for this Dandelion beer.

After waling away for a bit and lettign it warm up in the glass and let it linger in my mouth I start to notice a bit of Fantome character to it. Its just very subtle compared to others but it is there. Maybe since I get absolutely no smokiness from this when all other Fantome beers I've had did, which I've thoroughly enjoyed. A good tasting beer but just doesn't make me jump like most other Fantome brews have. Still worth a try and would buy again.

M: Finish is dry and lightly tart with good dark fruit flavors lingering. Dryness makes you want to take another sip and continue savoring. I do get some alcohol mixed with the dryness and fruitiness but is not bad at all. Its warming but not boozie.

O: Glad I finally got to try what seemed to be a strange beer but actually was not strange at all. I would not recommend this brew to some one who wants to experience the fantome funk but definatily to someone who's sampled other Fantomes and wants to experience a "clean" example of what Dany is capable of over in the Ardenne forest.

a deep amber pour, almost brown. 2 fingers of head which left behind a lot of nice lacing. smells very bready, wheat, some sweet dark fruits (raisin, plum, fig), white pepper, funky bubblegum-like belgian yeast. a weird rusty flavor, lots of raisins, very yeast oriented - a hint of brett but very charred-like woods as well.. this beer is like a funky "light" quad with a rusty overtone. in other words, not really my thing.

medium body with high carbonation, sweet and malty, funky with a dry finish.

if it weren't for the fact that it was cheapish and i was already pacing an order from belgium (so the shipping didn't give me a heart attack for a single bottle), i probably wouldn't have bothered with this one. i guess, too, with fantome it's hit or miss.. for me this was a miss - but some may like this style. i love saisons, but this was just more of a dark charred saison.. not my thing.

Derved from a 750ml bottle into a Hill Farmstead stemmed tulip. My first Fantome.

Appearance- Hazy orange/red with one finger of fluffy white head that left great lacing.

Smell- Rye and wheat spice, pilsner malts, light tart funky lemon, some pepper and yeast. Almost has a "BMC" "adjunct" smell to it.

Taste- Spicey yeast and a funky smoke flavor. Light lemon and very light tinge of booze. That smoke is so light and is almost hidden by funk, but it's still there. Minerality to this one too.

Mouthfeel- Well carbonated with medium body. Not hot from the 8%. Gently coats the mouth.

Overall- Wasn't expecting the flavors I got from this beer, but certainly glad it wasn't like people were saying the recent batches of Fantome were like. Solid saison. I should try more Fantome.

Bought a bottle or two at Bierparadijs

Pours cloudy, amber brown. Nice thick compacted head. Great retention.

Saison yeast in apparent on the nose. Malty sweet and hints of bitterness on the nose.

An explosion of flavor. Lots of fruity flavors, great malt base and something best described as funk. Sometimes it's like it wants to be tart but that never quite happens. Complex to say the least.

Nice medium to full body, perfect medium amout of carbonation.

One of the best beers I have ever had. After I drank one bottle I turned around to buy another 12. Great stuff and gert it if you can.

Pretty nice pour. Hazy, faded golden and pale. Nice foamy head

Musty aroma, some earthy barnyard not really funky. Some nice white pepper spice and a solid yet subtle notion of sulfur.

A solid taste. The sulfur seems to be the strongest aspect, but it's really well done and blends nicely with the white pepper, some coriander and lemon. It has a crispness with a lingering funkiness that's not all that funky. More earthy.

This beer is easy drinking with nice levels of carbonation, sulfur and citrus. Still, and earthy sort of beer.

Pours a bronze colour, slight cloud. Head is white, bit thin but lacing is nice. Looks alright.

Smells saisony and nice. Funky, but sweet, with brown sugar on there, notes of cherry, horse blanket and even salt. Very intriguing, but highly pleasant as well.

Taste is a little bit disappointing. Tastes quite yeasty for the most part with notes of tart, vinous characters upfront and some cherry on the back, with champagne and some of that brown sugar note. Very decent saison, with a bit of richness to it as well. Could use maybe more full flavour, and a bit more balance away from the yeast.

Bit of sizzle, but nicely padded by the body.

Fruity notes on an otherwise standard saison. Not bad at all.

A: Pour a clear yellow color. A one finger white head rises, then recedes in a second. No lace.
S: Funky, cheese, and plastic phenols. Some lemon and vinegar tartness in the nose as well. Though mostly, plastic band aid aromas.
T: Follows the nose with an intense funk and plastic phenolic flavor. Very unpleasant and harsh. A bit of lemony tartness works it way through, but very one sided.
M/D: A light to medium body. Very effervescent, and dry. To much so. I can feel the carbonation on my tongue. A little watery as well. Not something I want to drink.

After several tries of this, it is time to put my thoughts down. I did not enjoy this. To much plastic phenols for me tastes. I found nothing here I want to come back to.

A- colour is a cloudy apple honey, amazing retention and lacing, steller and beautiful. 4.5

S- farmhouse yeast, field, citrus, sour fruity malt, some flowery bitterness, herbal oiliness. Subtle but quite intricate. 4

T- lemon oil, yeast, grapefruit, blood orange, some backing malt, yeast is quite mild, very dry finish, mildly spicy, nutmeg. Very unique and complex. 4.5

M- lots of carbonation, pleasant mild body, crisp finish, a lot of dryness, sessionable and refreshing. 4.5.

First class saison, dandelion shows up on the aroma with a bit of a herbal note, taste is really complex, soft spicy and yeasty notes, all round really good, hops are light, some citrus oiliness, this is great stuff.

750ml, bottled 2012, purchase for $18.

A- Slightly hazy orange body. Thick foamy and fluffy white head with excellent retention. Active carbonation the minute the cork popped. Wonderful appeal.

S- Smells very haylike, herbal, grassy, spiced, and some light leathery tones. Very earthy and interesting.

T- There is a smoky note up front mixed with heavy spice. Plenty of leather, spice, grass, herbal bitterness, and plenty of earth. It's amazingly complex, earthy, herbal, and reminds me of a glass of Caol Ila 12 year. There is this wonderful smoky phenolic character that screams Islay scotch. Where's the 8%?

MF- Very full carbonation. It's soft, light, with a medium body.

O- Fantôme has done it again. This beer's earthiness is something else. The smoky phenolic notes tie it all together in such a wonderful way. I'm a scotch lover, so those flavors are really appealing. The grassy/herbal notes add an element of depth and complexity. Complex, confusing, unique, and exciting. Fantôme never ceases to brew something that makes you scratch your head.

750ml bottle into a tall tulip, I think this is a 2010 or 2011 but the label is ripped

A: Pours a slightly hazy golden color with some amber highlights. A finger of foam forms and quickly recedes to a film.

S: Lemons and Granny Smith apples intermingle very nicely to create a slightly sour smell.

T: Similar to smell, lemons and Granny Smith apples come together nicely. A bit minerally and grassy, this beer reminds me of spring.

M: Medium thickness with medium carbonation. Feels about right for the style.

O: The lemons and Granny Smith apples go well together, but I'm looking for a bit more in the style. Spices, funk, something else. This beer could be mistaken for cider. Decent nonetheless.

Poured from a 750ml cap and corked bottle into a wine glass

A - Really beautiful looking beer! Very bright and lively light orange color with a generous off-white head that fades quickly. Somewhat cloudy as well.

S - Lots of funky and earthy smells. I got that very strong and noticeable "wet horse blanket" smell that usually comes with Brettanomyces. There is also a faint citrus smell as well. The smell got me really excited to take a sip...

T - Like the smell, I got lots of earthy funk and brett flavors. Very complex. I was hoping for a little bit more sourness, but there it really wasn't sour at all. Each sip made me want to take another though... as it warmed up a bit the smell and the barnyard flavors intensified.

M - Medium bodied with a very nice, fine, natural carbonation

O - If you a fan of the saison style and like funky beers, give this a shot. If you are looking for something sour, pick something else. It would be pretty good with some nice meat and cheeses too...

A massive thanks to MrKennedy for this i never would of seen this otherwise and ive always been wanting to try something from these guys for a long time cheers mate and it pours the lightest amber hue with a fluffy three finger head that stays and some similar lacing here and there,the smell is very floral with honey,bandaids,a touch of funk and also citrus,the mouthfeel is medium bodied with above moderate carbonation but suits nicely with tastes of redgum honey,a slight touch of grapefruit,orange rind,a touch of toffee and finished with a floral bitterness that leaves you dry and wanting another sip and overall i really like it and suprisingly bitter for a Saison a very quaffable drop indeed and could drink it all day cheers.

Pours golden-amber with off white head in Fantome tulip. Nice lacing.

Smell is plum, bubblegum, banana, and an earthiness.

Taste is sweet malt, grass, hints of banana and bubblegum. An unusual charred oak quality comes in late with the bitterness. Bitterness is mild. I detect almost no tart character.

Mouthfeel is light-medium bodied. Lots of carbonation.

Overall this was good. Could have done without the charred oakiness and would have liked some tart sourness.

Pissenlit is a most interesting saison, unique in appearance, flavor, and texture, with solidly pleasing results. The beer's focus on bitterness and unripe fruits does not go unnoticed, though its other characters are still discernible below this flavorful mix. An excellent and unique saison, which along with the classic, goes together with Strange Ghost and Saint Roch as my most well-remembered beers from this brewery.

Pours a 2.5cm tall head, made up of small to medium-sized bubbles, tan in color, with excellent retention, lasting a few minutes as it settles to a 0.5cm cap atop the body. Lacing is exceptional: extra thick swatches stick to the sides of the glass with each sip and slowly merge into the cap topping the body; the sheeting effect is something of art. The body is an opaque golden brown color, with light bringing out reddish-orange hues and a faint yellow wrapping around the perimeter of the beer (and showing that the beer is slightly transparent, perhaps 90% opaque). Carbonation is visible moving along the edges of the glass, but I've never seen it move so slow: this is clearly a thick, heavy beer and it looks fantastic.

Aroma is, overall, very modest and rather average. There are hints of slight sweetness, Brettanomyces-influenced barnyard funk, citrus pith (grapefruit and/or orange), and aged herbs (bay leaves, savory), but none of them particularly strong or noteworthy.

Pissenlit's flavors focus on the bitter, tart, unripe, and citrus pith, creating a fairly amazing flavor when joined to the Belgian saison yeast and proprietary herbs that Dany uses. Front of tongue detects muted tartness, unripe fruits (apple, pear), and honey-like sweetness. Mid-palate finds dense flavors of unripe fruits, saison yeast, acidic tartness, tart candy sweetness, cheese, pineapple, and modest grapefruit. Back of palate picks up sharp bitterness, acidic tartness, cheese, saison yeast, and tart candy sweetness. Aftertaste is mildly tart and bitter, with slight graininess and citrus pith.

The beer is heavy, with ample carbonation, which nicely foams this thick concoction upon the palate creating a smooth and heavy mouthfeel. While this is different from many other saison I've had it's interesting and pleasing. Closes out thick, creamy, and fairly dry; quite satisfying.

750mL bottle. At least 2 years old, but date hasn't been marked. First tried this a couple of years back.

Initial pour is a near clear stained-glass orange, with a meeker than expected white head that rapidly recedes to the barest collar. Murkiness creeps into the later pours.

Aromas are distributed between a nice woody, almost oud-bruin like element and a lovely amalgam of sweet esters and candied malt character. Lashings of lemon and grapefruit peel, marmalade and sour cherry. Glints of booze and nailpolish remover at times.

Flavours follow, but there's no hint of the booze or phenolic notes from the aroma. There's an enticing savoury herbal element which I'm assuming is the dandelion, but it mixes so ably with the malt backbone it' s hard to tell. Juicy, sour apricot and citrus pith lead the way.

Medium, syrupy feel, with modest carbonation and a very satisfying tangy acidity.

Truly appetising stuff. Bright, juicy flavours together with the moderate acidity make this insanely drinkable.

Picked up in Vermont. So this is Fantome's dandelion beer. Lets see how it stacks up to Hill Farmsteads Vera Mae. Poured into my Duvel tulip.

A - Pours a crystal clear very dark gold with a MASSIVE four finger fizzy white head that slumped down to leave sticky side lacing and a dense, dense quarter inch white head. Quite nice.

S - Light earthy notes along with some faint alcohol notes and that subtle bitter vegetation that comes with dandelions. Not quite as citrusy as Vera Mae.

T - Taste is...well, a bit harsher than I was expecting. Lots of alcohol here, shocking amounts due to it being Fantome. Some faint barnyard funk, along with dandelion. Wow. Can't get over how much alcohol is in this!

M - Mouthfeel isnt bad. Lots of carbonation. Helps it be not quite as boozey but damn.

O - Overall, the harshness of the booze is incredibly rough. Ugh. Maybe some age will help this even out.

Bottle poured into a Hill Farmstead stem.

Pour: Deep, dark orange body, with two fingers of off white soapy head. Head hangs around for a while and leaves some sticky lacing.

Smell: Burst of lemony citrus right from the popping of the cork. Some white pepper, a light funk, and a light astringency.

Taste: More citrus and lemon, plus some nice yeasty sweetness. White pepper and cloves come out next, along with some bread and a light hay. The only downside is a light rubber cement on the finish... I'm glad I consumed this now because I feel like this flavor would grow given time.
EDIT: As it warms, this is awful. Straight up rubber cement

Mouthfeel: Rather heavier than I was expecting for a "spring" saison. Juicy, yet dry. A slightest hint of alcohol comes through on the finish.

Overall: Enjoyable at first, but the rubber cement becomes overpowering.
