With no other Belgian brewery currently doing what farmhouse brewers have been doing for centuries, the ebs and flows of Fantome earns them as much frustration as it does grace. But once in a while, magic happens and that does so with Pissenlit.

Pouring a darker amber shade than is common, its richer reds and browns elude to the toasted character within. With the nose hovering above, whiffs of bread crust and cotton candy seduce the senses while earthen wafts of peppercorn, straw and hay float above.

Its sultry taste is estery of grape candy, plum and apple before the middle palate sets in with its earthy and peppery balance. With the soft malt presence drying out, the slightness of rose wine acidity, cumin, clove and cork all offer an herbal, woodsy and leathery quality to give the taste mature complexity, balance and grace.

Its dry and peppery finish easily sheds any lingering finish and offers a refreshing, bubbly and warming feel with an aftertaste of dried fruit and damp straw. More complex than words allow, Fantome demonstrates why they are the premiere farmhouse ale makers!

a really weird beer, wine-like in its yeast complexion with even a little wild yeast funk in there too. fantome always has awesome yeast in their beers, this one is weird and new to me, tart but really full bodied and quite dry. the beer is a darker copper color, heady and hazy with a ton of sediment at the bottom of the bottle. the head never settles at all staying thick and cloud-like. the nose is sharp, spicy from the yeast, and with a distinct floral bitterness. not hoppy, but bitter like greens. there is a definitive dandelion head flavor in the finish of this beer, and ive heard mixed things that it is in fact brewed with dandelions, and that it is not. if i had to guess id say it must be, because it really does taste like them. spring time is in this beer, but its super bitter too, almost like the dandelion greens are used in the place of hops for bittering. its mildly astringent and really full bodied and frothy in the feel, but there is an acidity too. carbonation is great, white wine tannins show up in the finish, with the flowers and the bitterness. its really weird, but i like that weirdness in fantome beers, and thats why i keep buying them when i see them. enjoyable, but one time only. i wouldnt pick this up again.

750ml bottle 8,0% Abv.
Served chilled in a wine glass

Appearance: Wow, this is a really interesting colour, I was expecting a golden beer, but instead it pours a rather clouded light reddish-brown with golden-orange edges. A soft pour yields a massive off-white head that lasts fantastically well and leaves thick lacing as it recedes. 4.25

Smell: This might just be the most unique smelling Fantome offering I have had to date, offering a strong earthiness, grassy notes, freashly broken foliage, some underlying sweetness, apple, a touch of citrus peel, coriander and actually a touch of dandelion. 4.5

Taste: As the nose suggested, this is absolutely delicious and incredibly unique. Note include: A light tartness, an earthy quality, apples, a touch of citrus, coriander, spicy yeast, a little lactic, broken foliage, a little dandelion and a touch of sweetness. 4.25

Mouthfeel: Medium bodies with a medium-high level of carbonation. The body matches the flavour profile perfectly and results in a fantastically refreshing, easy drinking beer. 4.25

Overall: Pissenlit is another fantastic beer from Fantome and one I hope to have again soon. I think it would pair amazingly well with a crusty loaf of bread and some rustic cheeses. 4.5

This was a really weird beer. The herbal bitternes from the dandelions was difficult to get past. Giving this beer some time to grow on you might be necessary. I will probably revisit this later and give it more of a chance.

Pours a dark orange, decent head, moderate lacing. Sherry on the nose, a little spice. Red fruit, some toffee, citrus, somewhat sour, moderately dry finish. Not what I expected in a beer labeled a "saison," but standing on its own it's a very nice beer. Reminds me more of a Flemish brown than a saison.

A: Pours a clear orange with a 1/2-inch thick white head which lingers before settling to a thin cap and rim leaving spotty lace.

T: Mild cheese, funk is more developed, farmhouse yeast, oak, earthy, spices, musty, fruity.

M: Moderate body and medium carbonation. Fruity, dry, yeasty finish.

O: Nice and aged well.
