Folks at the beer store always rave about this one. I saw it is highly regarded on this site and the reviews made me interested. Variance in the annual recipe and other aspects attracted my attention. So, I shelled out the $15 for a 750 ml bottle.
I opened the cap only to find a cork underneath. That is a first for me.
The pour was as I expected. Aggressive pour and you get a medium head that does not want to stay around. However, the ring around the edge is substantial. Note: The second glass out of this bottle yielded a better head and the nose is stronger. Out came lots of the yeast from the bottom but it did not injure the taste of the beer!!
Nose was initially more funky. I wondered if it was due to the green bottle, but as the glass aired out the funk went away. I will say I got some acidity, funk and a hint of yeast.
Taste gets better as it is left to sit in the glass. I don't want to rush this. Overall, this is a very tart beer, not sour like gueze, etc. I would say green apple, vinegar. lemon and yeast. The more I drink this; the more the spicy lemon comes out. I also pick up some orange peel in the back ground.
Mouth feel is more substantial than one would expect; rather heavy mouth feel. Alcohol is so hidden it scares me. This is a really refreshing drink. There is something about this beer that is really growing on me. A very intriguing drink to be sure and very well done. This is the best tart beer/saison I have had.
