Thanks to Joey for bringing this one to La Bella this past Tuesday night (8-25-09).
The bottle seemed to be from the most recent batch with a best by date of 5/2012. This beer poured a dull and cloudy orange color with a thin, fizzy, head that scattered rather quickly. A stream of tiny bubbles raced from the bottom edge of the glass all the way to the top.
At first I detected a grainy aroma and old orange, quite musty, wheat, hay, a bit of citrus, and a hint of floral notes in the back. Then I got some sour apricots and young/green nectarines with stronger malt sweetness as the beer warmed up.
The taste was similar to the aroma starting with a grain flavor, citrus, and a leathery brett finish. A bit cheesy towards the end, old lemons, and rotting orange mid-palate. Medium acidity level that lingers for a bit. Nice medium dry finish.
Sharp carbonation at first but it turned softer later on, still high on carbonation once it warmed. Hardly any sign of the 8% alcohol.
Pretty good for a fresh bottle but I'd really like to try this one with some age as I'm sure the wild yeast would do some interesting work on this one.
