750ml Burgundian bottle. Thanks be to DoktorZee for the early X-mas gift from his recent SoCal sojourn. 'Hiver' equals 'winter', of course, and beyond the name, the only other indicator of seasonal affectation is the general listing of 'spices' in the specified ingredient list.

This beer pours a slight cloudy, dark golden amber hue, with three fingers of puffy, thinly foamy off-white head, which leaves some randomly sized flecks of fuzzy lace around the glass as it very slowly seeps away.

It smells of moderately smoked, peaty malt, like Islay meets Habana, with a seaside medicinal character that I have to stretch a bit to relate to any farmhouse funk qualities of note, though horseblanket and wet musty grain come to mind, somewhat. The taste is much more approachable, relatively, right off the bat - a caramel-tinged grainy malt, some lingering fleshy smokiness, a surprising, bitter noble hoppiness, a prominent sulphur character, a bit of soft, musty barnyard, lightly wafting gasoline fumes, a touch of tanned leather, and some burgeoning vinous notes.

The bubbles are generally supportive, and little more, the body an almost medium weight, and actually smooth enough, given the swirling demons around this whole project. It finishes off-dry, the pale malt sweetness enough to successfully counter the not quite played out smoky medicinal, musty notes, as the bitter hops hang out in the background, laughing and lounging.

One hell of a complicated, complex, and very busy beer, mes amis. It swings wildly from the dankest of Scotch influences, to the (almost) serenest of softy malty, yeasty farmhouse incarnations. Apparently there are some generic 'seasonal' spices added to this unholy mix, but I am patently unable to discern their provenance, given the distracting otherness overtly on display here. Interesting to try, but not one I would choose to actively revisit.

A-hazy orange amber color with a nice off-white head and good lacing

S-lemon, grains, strong bandaid, belgian yeast, light fruit and spices

T-grain, floral, honey, yeast, slight tartness, little nutmeg and apple, straw

F-medium body with moderate carbonation, crisp and a little dry

O-decent saison, but I prefer the regular to this offering, easy drinking if you get past the bandaid nose

750ml into snifter.

A: Pours a deep honey color with a fluffy, huge, whipped egg-white head that very slowly faded into a fuzzy and thick collar.
S: Meaty, savory, smoke fills my nose. I get notes of band aids and maybe a hint of mild lemon and caramel beneath.
T: Dirty dish water, peat, sour old grains, boiled meat, and faint citrus. The finish has a terrible sourness, and the aftertaste is peppery and full of grain.
M: Medium-full body, fluffy carbonation, muddy, sour, greasy mouthfeel.
O: Bad bottles are bad. I've heard of these smoke bombs but haven't encountered one yet. Very disappointing. I will have to revisit this again with hopefully a good bottle as I am not getting any of the flavors other reviewers are describing.

Poured from a capped & corked 750 mL bottle into a Brewer's Art goblet. Moderately gentle hand. No date visible, but presumably from this past winter.

A: Hazy, orange-brown body with 2 fingers of off-white head. Ok retention. Nice lacing.

S: Belgian yeast with musty, fruity notes. Apple and apricot. Hay. Bread.

T: Spicy, earthy yeast opens and introduces a slightly nutty, rustic maltiness. Light hop bitterness on a fairly dry finish. Alcohol is consistent with 8% or just slightly more present than expected. Pretty clean finish with light floral elements in the aftertaste.

M: Moderate carbonation with moderate body. Fuller than your typical saison, but fits well with the flavor profile.

O: A tasty, malt-forward saison. Reminded me a bit of a biere de garde without losing it's fundamental saison qualities. Probably would have enjoyed this more a few months ago, but on a temperate May day it still drank pretty damn nicely.

Prost!
