Cheers to Goblinmunkey7 for sharing this beer

Consumed 1/15/14

I purchased this bottle in Vermont a few months ago. I'm guessing I should also thank Shaun Hill?

Appearance: Definitely dark, but I wouldn't call it "black dark" - really more of a medium brown, with some clarity around the edges - pours with a medium-sized head, fades to a nearly solid cap, leaves some nice streaks of lacing

Smell: Tons of Fantôme funky weirdness and some genuinely strange burnt aromas - tons of funk, with some wet, dirt basements - some roasty aromas - some burnt/smoky aromas, kind of smells like a burnt cardboard box that was abandoned in a flooded basement... in a good way - some yeasty esters, pepper, and dirt

Taste: About as bizarre as the smell, with some charm - funky, weird dirt/stone basement - very earthy - lots of Fantôme yeast weirdness, with some clove, spice, and straight up yeast - the burnt character here is pretty strange - smoky, burnt, kind of roasty - kind of tastes like the aroma of musty cigarettes (not ideal) - some tartness and sourness, but I wouldn't really label this as "extra sour"

Mouthfeel: Medium body, nicely carbonated, smooth, finishes nicely dry and clean dispite some the weird flavors

Overall: Smoking is bad, mmmkay

This is probably the most bizarre thing I've ever had from Fantôme. This kind of reminds me of the Fantôme/Hill Farmstead 5 Sciences, except it's even weirder. There's a lot of smoke. And funk. I'm not sure what to make of it.

Purchased this awesome 22oz flip top bottle from The Beer Temple in Chicago, IL for $25. Wouldn't fit in my checked luggage so I drank it.
The label is just awesome...it looks like it was printed on a home desktop printer. All the images are all skewed and fuzzy...plus the "million dollar" ghost on the back is great.
The top popped with little effort - which makes me thankful for not trying to check this.
Pours a deep brown with amber hue and a half finger of white head into the FFF teku glass. Lots of lacing - almost wine like as the white foam sticks to the glass.
Aromas of huge smokey, leather, chocolate, dried fruit...and ever so slight funk.
Taste is very similar...big leather flavor, with chocolate, red wine, and dried fruit flavor with classic Fantome funky finish...so good; its why I buy it.
Overall, its not like any beer ive ever had, which again is the normal with Fantome. So unique. I crave no other brew like a Fantome...
Thank you Danny. Another great one.

Review from memory, but the beer was a little thin, not a huge amount of carbonation. With the flip top closure I am not sure about getting an extra to let this one cellar. The "dark" side to this didn't really come through, more-so was a lot of horseblanket and super barnyard funk. For a beer with no age in the bottle this was surprising, reminded me a bit of a 30 year old burgundy.

I purchased a 750 ml swing top bottle at a bottle shop just south of the loop in Chicago - paid $28.99.

A - As I flip the cap the foam starts to slowly rise out of the bottle so I had to pour it into a wine glass fast. It pours a brownish / red mahogany color with a small beige head that fades quickly but leaves considerable lacing.

S - Lots of funk on the nose. It smells like an intense Flanders Red and really gets the saliva flowing too.

T - The best way I can really describe the taste is that it tastes like the blend of a Porter and a Flanders Red. Lots of chocolate malt and even some dark fruit flavors up front followed by a tart and biting finish that leaves your mouth dry and makes you want to keep sipping. The 10% abv is almost completely hidden in this beer as well, which might be its most impressive feat.

M - There was a decent amount of carbonation in my bottle, so I would have preferred a little less, but overall it was very nice. Medium bodied and what you would suspect from a Fantôme saison.

O - For me, I'd say this was absolutely worth purchasing once (maybe 2 bottles if you want to cellar one). It should be noted that Fantôme bottles vary a LOT from bottle to bottle. But I had a good experience with this one.

Blind tasting.

Weird...but with Fantome, you just never know what you're going to see next. A flip-top bottle that opened with a huge *pop.* Murky pour, dark coffee brown, with a wispy off-white head that settled to a collar, and left a few strands of lacing on the glass. Roasty aroma, obvious hit of smoked meat up front (I'm thinking cherrywood-smoked malts), peat, tobacco ash, dry rub spices. Smokey taste, as expected from the nose, cured meat, tobacco ash, roasty dark malts, some dry cocoa flavor, peppery spice and hints of something vegetal, with a bit of fruity astringency. Medium body. Pretty awkward and messy overall...I wouldn't come near tackling a whole bottle by myself. But it was nice to give it a try.
