The production process is nearly the same as for the Kriek, the difference being that no cherries are added. It's a naturally acidified ale in which we try to reach the perfect balance between sweet and sour. This amber-coloured ale contains 7% vol. Alc. and can age really nice."

This is a nice, well balanced sour ale. Pretty approachable, would be a good entry into the category but it didn't stand out to me as being extraordinary or anything you can't miss. (181 characters)

Pours a vibrant, golden yellow color with a decent, bubbly head.

Has aromas of an enjoyable tart rustic ale, with some barnyard to it, together with strawy hay and crisp, white citrus peel.

Exhibits a high, fitting carbonation among a smooth, enjoyable mouthfeel with a medium body.

Full, round taste, of straw, old leather, citrus and soft, dough hay. Citrus shines through in a very convincing fashion, among the present, apple infused acidity. Finishes very refreshing, with stony minerals, slightly sweeter malts and sour citrus - very clean and refreshing.

Tastes a tad smooth and softer than your usual Lambic, gently fruit accentuated, with a pleasant depth of flavors. (681 characters)

It looks like a lambic or geuze, but is a bit darker with slightly more foam on it. The taste and smell are also like a lambic or geuze, but the sourness is somewhat milder, probably caused by the blending with a flemish old brown beer. I was not a fan of sour beer in the beginning, but this beer has me started to appreciate the sourness. (341 characters)

This has become a go-to beer recently for me...
When?
When I don't quite want to break the cellar for Cantillon but I still want a very drinkable sour... This goes half way and is oh so drinkable. It says half pale ale half sour and is.
Only downside is the 7%... If only it were 5.

Pours amber with a small head.
Nose shows elderflower, funky barnyard notes, light malt, unripe plums. Lovely.
Flavours focus on a delicious tartness, a little oak, light elderflower and lemon rind. (198 characters)

I enjoyed this at Moeder lambic served in a tulip glass.

The color is light amber/golden with honey-like appearance with thick bone white head and fine bead with ringlets of lace left clinging. The smell has a woody and light sour aroma with mix of hoppy and light wild yeast elements with gentle citrus and sour apple odors. The feel is very good with tangy acidity with mild spice and very tart with gentle lactic tinge with subtle spiciness throughout and clean malt underlying a grapefruit pithy puckering quality with moderate carbonation.

The tasteis very tart like a juicy grapefruit mixed with malt and carbonated with zesty lightly hoppy flavor and dry woody character with some mild tannin and gentle flavor from the barrel. The taste is slightly sharp with mild toasted flavor which I suspect is part of the blend with finish acidic almost like biting into a grapefruit rind. Overall very good-nothing bad about this but a bit raw and bitter fresh, perhaps a little aging may help some of the sour flavors conflict for me but very decent overall. (1,061 characters)

0.75 paper wrapped bottle. 70% sour, 30% lambic. Best before 07/12/18.
Pours a bit hazy orange, small white head kept alive for a while by bubbles, leaving just a thin sticky lacing.
Smell is divided equally between the two styles used: lots of sour grapes, vinegar, but also the lambic barnyard funk. Light sour cherries, hay, lemon, wood, green apple and a faint sugary note that tells me this won't be exclusively sour. A lot going on here.
It starts really sour, not only vinegar but packing the astringency and acidity of lemon juice, white grapes, green apple, a touch of slightly sweet pear, unripe cherry plum and lots of green fruit peel. Brett yeasts seem to take over, big barnyard notes with green hay, floorboard, oak barrel stave, grass, plus lots of green funky notes towards the end. Finish is quite bitter and very dry. Almost none of the bit of sweetness detected in the smell.
Medium body, helpful carbonation, very refreshing. Aftertaste resembles that of dry red wine that's been barrel aged for a while.
It hits all the right spots perfectly, but doesn't really wow. Still very very good. (1,110 characters)

Haven't been lucky enough to find one in NYC yet, but picked up this bottle at a shop in Bruges and brought it back to the states. Poured into a snifter.

A - A murky, cloudy tan/orange with a soapy head. Thicker than a traditional gueuze.

S - Sour, intense.

T - Sour and bitter, but not overwhelmingly so. Citrusy, like grapefruit with a hint of lemon.

M - Light body with a rich carbonation. Very crisp and refreshing.

O - A very well executed twist on the lambic style. I was fortunate enough to visit Cantillon during my trip to Belgium, and personally I prefer this beer over any of theirs as this one has a bit more intensity and a much fuller carbonation. Really wish this was easier to find in the states, I'd gladly keep a bottle or two handy for a hot summer day. (777 characters)

A: Wrapped in paper bottle. Pours a slightly hazy dark orange color forming a medium light yellow bubble and fizzy head. Medium to low retention and only few spotty lacings left in the glass. A thin layer remains for very long on the top

S: Great fruitiness with notes of white grapes mainly. Sour and vinegar, nevertheless, smooth and pleasant. Notes of leather and oak. Metallic and earthy. Flowery hops. Great balance

T: Very fruity upfront. Strong notes of white grapes, pale malts, vinegar, oak and leather. Mild tartness. A bit earthy and metallic. Perfect taste

M: Light body. Medium carbonation. Lambic and woody aftertaste

O: Excellent drinkability. One of the best sour belgian ales I've ever had. Extremely balanced and smooth. 7% ABV that cannot be noticed. Masterpiece (824 characters)

From Shelton Bros. Website: "The Cuvée de Ranke is roughly a 70/30 blend of a beer brewed with top fermenting Rodenbach yeast and aged Girardin lambic." It's the base beer for Kriek de Ranke.

This lambic styled brew form De Ranke fills my tulip wit ha deep sunset orange bordering on red with a mild haziness that makes the body though to see through. This beer looked still until the glass was half full and an ecru head grew to a half finger before fizzling out to a thin cap. Each drink and swirl leaves thin sheet lacing down the glass. This is an excellent looking brew with great color!

The aroma of this beer is packed to the gills with complexity. All the complexity morphs over time in the glass and actually changes from whiff to whiff. Dried out woodiness comes forward first and resembles rosemary at times and horse blanket & straw at others. A little bit of sweat comes through here and there accompanied by dried, cracked leather, summer weeds, slightly under ripe plum, and barnyard all in that order of intensity but switching positions often. There's even a ghost like spicy hoppiness in there somewhere.

The flavor is as dizzyingly complex as the aroma but the profile is actually quite different. The sourness comes across mid-palate and grows through the finish. It's hard to put my finger on the flavors in this one. Sweaty horse blanket, dry leather, damp mildewing straw, and plum all slide over the tongue. The sourness is enough to permeate my cheeks and cause a small pucker while the finish brings something completely unexpected. The dry woody like rosemary combines with glistening orchard fruit that was nowhere to be found in the nose. Juicy peach, pear and melon (I know it's not orchard) all come together on the finish to cool down the sour finish. The sour is still there but the slight fruity sweetness balances it out nicely. I almost forgot about the quick flash of herbal bitterness on the swallow. Cuvee de Ranke is delicious brew!

The body is light with a bone dry woodiness on the swallow. The sourness coats the entire mouth and the mild bitterness comes in afterwards, growing after each drink. The carbonation is very light but the light, almost watery body keeps this beer flowing without a problem. The combination of bitter and sour do a number on the taste buds halfway through the glass.

I started off giving this a 4 for drinkability but it's now to the point I can't drink it fast enough. It's not a slamable beer at all but it can be quietly sipped all night long, one after the other. This beer goes down supremely easy.

Next time I see Cuvee de Ranke on the shelf I will be picking up a few more bottles. This really is an outstanding beer that will smack you over the head with its complexity. This beer should be enjoyed over a long period of time with the huge change in flavor as it warms. Pick this up if you see it.

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a Moinette chalice. Expiration date 8/6/17.

A - Hazy dark gold. Eggshell head that dissipates quickly.

S - Tart lemon, a little horse blanket, but mostly light breadiness.

T - Lemonade-esque, not a tart bomb at all, sourness is very subtle. A little tart cherry, along w/ sourdough breadiness. Refreshing.

M - Medium with lively carbonation. Still coats well and the bubbles scrub the palate clean.

O - The lack of tartness is refreshing at first, but then you start to miss that tart punch. This is a blend of aged geuze and fresh Belgian blond ale, I need to remember that. But a very refreshing, tasty beer. Not quite worth the price, though. (682 characters)

BB June 2017.

Beer is cloudy dark orange in colour, with a very small white head. Head fades fairly quickly.

The smell is tart, with yeast, bread and funk.

The beer is fairly sour, with a notable brett funkiness. Yeast, quite dry. Bread and wheat flavours. A bit of a cherry flavour. Oak.

Medium bodied, moderately carbonated. Sticky and puckery.

Overall, very good. The sour and funk adds a nice twist to the Belgian pale. (429 characters)

Tap at Moeder Lambic.

Pours a nice pillowy creamy head of 1.5 fingers, fades slowly with layers, fairly hazy golden base dark orange top, thins to a golden color on the sides.

nose is pretty nice, tart fruit, light musty vinous funk, acidity, sour fruity mostly, a bit of banand too, light oak.

Taste is fairly sour, tart fruit like acidic bite but not too much, very light bready taste, light stone fruit, not super sour either. A bit juicy, and tart funky fruit. Finish is dry and flemmy, light cracker with a lingering sharp tartness and acidic taste.

Mouth is med bod, decent carb.

Overall pretty nice, different but good, tasty. (638 characters)

Lightly hazed apricot with an airy white head of average size for a Belgian brew. Leaves some spotty lacing, a raised lattice and strong film. Slow, steady bead.

Nicely rounded, with plenty of crisp sour character working with an oak-like woodiness. Loads of tart green apple, marmalade, cloves and zingy grassy funk. Sweet malt backbone is surprisingly evident, but then again this aint 5%

Flavours are not at all sweet however, as buckets of green capsicum, lemon and grapefruit pith team up with the green apple. Hefty amounts of peppery hay make it very dry overall.

Light to medium with vibrant acidity. Carbonation is fairly average for the style. Properly dry, earthy sour finish with good length.

Solid sour from a brewery that never misses. (795 characters)

Purchased on the joint recommendation of Stu from Yeastie Boys and Adam from Platinum Liquor. Enjoyed the bottle all myself one lonely Friday evening.

Pours a golden colour, steady bead feeding a very pleasant heavy head, nice and generous but sinks in strands. Some lacing left behind. Looks nice.

Smells tart and funky. Large organic, earthy kind of offness with a crisp and fresh lemony acidity over the top. Touch of raspberry, too, some dirt and lucerne, but yeah the tartness is a real fresh note, and makes it smell very pleasant indeed.

Taste is also pretty funky, with a really noticeable damp, organic barnyard flavour. Tartness comes through pretty strong, with lemon, vinegar and a very underripe strawberry note. Finishes with a very slight puckering astringency, but it's really just a whisper. The back palate is mostly sweet and fruity, with a big caramelised pear character. Very tasty, balanced and professionally put-together lambic style.

Nips a bit from that wild yeast. Bit foamy from the carbonation and ends surprisingly sweet and full, but inevitably dry.

Great drop. Complex and confronting, but deeply rewarding. Beautifully reined in. (1,167 characters)

Bottle: Poured a clear bright deep golden color ale with a large pure white foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of tart notes with light funky barnyard notes from the lambic. Taste is a complex mix between some sour and tart notes with light acidic notes, green apple notes, oak and some funky barnyard notes also perceptible. Body is about average with good carbonation. Well put together with great amount of complexity while retaining a good level of drinkability. (491 characters)

Deep golden colour with a bit of orange in there as well, ring of white head and just a touch of lace. Smell has a big dose of lemon, wheat and pear, quite funky, wild yeast gives this an acidic smell, a bit of spice is picked up as well, more fruit especially as it came to room temp. Taste is tart up front, a bit of a grainy sweetness and a touch of honey, fruity with lots of pear, lemon and apple, acidic and puckering, nice sourness throughout. High carbonation, dry and acidic, medium bodied, a bit of syrup at points. Delicious and easy drinking stuff, quite dry and very refreshing, I could kill a 750 of this on a nice warm day easy. (643 characters)

At Moeder

Thick white head chillin on some hazy dark golden orange beer. Looking good in the De Ranke glass.

Smells fruity n' funky. That whole being out on the farm type of smell. The lemon is dominate but there are hints of some sweeter mango and peach.

Tart fruitiness(lots of lemon citrus character) and some funkiness. The flavor washes away fairly quickly it seems. Seems like some oakiness to it.

Drinks super smooth with light carbonation and body. Drying.

Highly enjoyable beer here. I was hoping for more sourness but got over that quick. Very delicious and easy to slug down which isn't good for the wallet. (624 characters)

Hazy golden colour with a foamy, white head. Good head retention.

Earthy and somewhat tart. Nice lemon and grapefruit characteristics. Almost a little malt. Nice.

Refined tartness that combines with a very mellow sweetness. The overall character is reminiscent of lambic. Mild earthiness and not much bitterness. There could be a bit more fruit character but it is good.

Medium-light body with moderately-high carbonation. Fine.

A solid sour ale. The lambic qualities are great and it comes together very nicely. (516 characters)

Bomber bought in Buffalo last winter. Cellared, let outside today to cool, poured into wine glasses and enjoyed.

The packaging is funny. I like the paper-wrapped bottle. The label on the actual bottle itself is straight out of the early 1980s. Dot matrix font printing. Kind of awe-uninspiring. But I'm not drinking the label, so no biggie. Oh, and I can't find the abv on the label. Fun!

Pour: there wasn't all that much head/carbonation.Thin microcarbon bubbles with a teeny tiny white lacing on top. leaves an o-ring around the rim of the glass.

Its colour in an apricot gold. very purdy. Nose-wise, you have to breath in real deep to get the nuances of the nose (so a few points off for that). but once you breathe it in, you appreciate the barnyard hit that you get. It's like a horse had sex with a lemon on a pile of wet hay. Now, the challenge is explaining to non-sourheads how that is appealing, but trust me, it is.

This is a very nice tasting beer. It has a lingering, bitter (orange peel?) finish to it, which is strange for a sour/lambic. But I don't mind. Not kicking this girl out of bed just yet. It definitely has a medium level of sweetness to the taste, but it has the dry, barrel-aged finish to it, which is nice. Getting a mouthful of lemon, citrus, some cherry. The funk/blue cheese taste lingers along with the bitterness after you swallow. A lovely reminder of what you just consumed. Alcohol is hidden. Be careful, ye mateys. Oh yeah, I'd suggest that there's a slight chalky mouth coat after. strange.

This is definitely a solid sour. Curious as to what it would taste like 2 years down the road. But the level of funk after 1 year was very nice. Not sure if I'd let it ride for anything more than 1 additional year. (1,749 characters)

750ml bottle, paper-wrapped. Refermented, once again 'en bouteille', for 'taste evolution'. I love that, I just do.

This beer pours a hazy, medium muddled golden apricot hue, with two fingers of puffy, foamy off-white head, which leaves some crumbling sea-cliff lace around the glass as it duly recedes.

It smells of moderately tart lemon and cherry notes, pale grainy malt, mild, yeasty barn-like funk, soft hay, and a weak woodiness. The taste leads with the same tamely sour stone fruit acidity - mostly lemon - with a sturdy grainy, almost lager-like malt, some waning green yeastiness, subtle organic funk, a further, slightly sweet orchard fruitiness, and some equivocating dry oak notes. Nothing from the elevated ABV of which to speak at this juncture, apparently.

The carbonation is a tad frizzy, but seemingly only momentarily so, and otherwise mostly understated in its support, the body a generally medium weight, and fairly smooth in the face of the understated sour interlopers. It finishes off-dry, the sweetness of the malt engendering a fruitiness that is not all that (tart, that is), with the funk and yeast trailing off into the West.

A decently balanced sour Belgian ale, the blended 'fruity' lambic adding an extra oomph factor, without going all over the top. Weirdly drinkable, especially when your taste buds have gotten all pent up in anticipation, which I suppose is a good thing here. Now, on the flip side, the ABV has been upped, yet the inherent tartness is just capable enough at hiding it. Huh. It's always something, with these Low Country offerings. (1,589 characters)

Poured hazy orange with some bubbles along with a small white head that faded away quickly. A bit of lacing down the glass.

Lots of funk. Cherry, citrus and oak in the aroma too.

Similar flavors. Very funky and sour all along. Good mustiness and sour fruit flavors. Finishes dry.

Medium bodied with medium to low carbonation. Very dry on the finish almost like a good Merlot.

Overall very tasty beer and one that took me by surprise as being one of my favorites at our tasting. (481 characters)

Best by 06/2016:
Pours turbid amber with etched whites atop with a solid rim of the same fluffed bubble. Nice apple, copper, acetic vinegar, hints of lemon and funky hay and soil. Nicely tart up front and with a bitterness I’d not anticipated and some metallic and astringent character. Some leafy, vinous character along some unrefined vinegar. Thin bodied with hi carb and watering finish. An okay beer, at an okay price ($17/750ml). Actually a very sessionable, approachable beer with a sour character and a lambic twist. I would enjoy this with a friend at lunch time over a couple sanwiches with a friend on a nice warm Spring day. (638 characters)

a - pours a murky orange with a think fizzy head.

s - smells nice. pretty sweet tart. some grass and hay.

t - pretty earty and grassy. geuze with a sour kick, not bad at all.

m - prickly but soft. easy for a sunday morning.

o - nice geuze vibe, not worth the price of admission in my opinion, but rather tasty. pretty surprised to see that this is classified as a BPA. (451 characters)

Pours a clear, dark amber color with a thin ring of white bubbles. Minimal lacing as it recedes.

Aroms begin funky and yeasty with freshly squeezed lemon rinds, oaky chardonnay and quite a bit of earth. As it warms you get some mild stone fruits.

The tastes follow the nose with a mild pilners maltiness underneath a layer of funk. There's a flicker of sweetness, but otherwise it's a sour ride. Splash of citric lemon juice and white wine vinegar. Big pop of acidity and a touch of spiciness.

The mouthfeel is medium-thin bodied with medium carbonation. Finish is dry, sour and earthy but not overly so of either. (617 characters)
