Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle.

Pours a dark brick red with a huge, cream-colored head. The aroma has a Belgian yeast component as well as some sweet malt, candi sugar and some grassyness. The flavor is caramel malt, chocolate and some yeast. Medium mouthfeel and low carbonation.

Pours a dark amber haze with a thick, creamy hazelnut head that persists.

The smell is extraordinary, fresh yeast, hops, dried apricot fruit, red apple, nuts and vanilla with a slight sour character. Really alive and vibrant coming out of the bottle, I can smell it from a couple of feet away.

Very nicely balanced between soft malts, aggressive hops and bittering from the dark grains. There is a lot of depth to this but the freshness dominates. The finish is dry and slightly astringent which brings down the drinkability score a little bit. Perhaps some more time in the bottle would smooth out those rough edges. For what it is worth, my wife told me after drinking this that "we HAVE to go to Belgium...". I am not going to argue with that sentiment. :-)

Had on-tap at the Brick Store.

Pours a dark brown color with dark ruby highlights. The head is one-finger of off-white foam that recedes into a thin layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of lightly roasted malts and herbal hops with solid amounts of dark fruit aromas that intensify as the beer warms.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Dark fruit and herbal hop flavors stand out over smooth and lightly roasted malt flavors. As with the aroma the dark fruit flavors gain steam as the beer warms.

Mouthfeel is good. There's a smooth thickness with soft carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I didn't have a problem finishing my glass and could have another.

Overall this is another solid beer from De Ranke. Worth a shot.

(Served in a tulip glass) Bottled five years before 02 2014
A-This beer has a dense dark caramel brown body that doesn't allow any light to pass. There is a thick creamy tan head that sticks to the glass in clouds with each sip.
S- There is a fresh yeasty note but otherwise the beer is pretty clean.
T- The mellow flavors of malt have some chocolate malt notes that become more watery as the beer warms. The soft roasted malt note in the finish has some licorice hints and a green cinnamon heat to the hops. There is a bitterness that lingers after each sip.
M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with no real alcohol heat.
D- This beer is pretty clean if aroma and flavor with hops only really in the bitterness. I can't imagine that age would help this beer at all.

750ml bottle, white paper wrapping. "Beer refermented in the bottle, with taste evolution." All right...I'm sensing, and expressly enjoying, a Flemish/French/English lost in translation moment here.

This beer pours a hazy, very dark reddish brown colour, with two flabby fingers of tight foamy beige head, which settles lazily, but evenly, rendering some forest canopy lace around the glass in the process.

It smells of roasted dark grain, dry coffee grounds, ash, mild black fruity malt, and earthy, gritty hops. The taste is lightly toasted dark malt, sweet and acidic fleshy fruit - plums, prunes, and dates - softly sugary molasses, dusty yeast, some grainy chocolate, zingy anise, and edgy earthy, floral hops.

The carbonation is rather low-key, just a subtle prick here and there, the body a sturdy medium weight, with an airiness that provides a strange edge, but also seems to aid in the overall creamy smoothness. It finishes fairly off-dry, the sweetness of the dark fruity malt, swirling blended sugar, and (I just have to surmise, sans any other evidence) some saccharine contribution from the big ABV. A high-palate zinginess (it just isn't actually bitter, fyi) helps to keep things in a relatively teetering balance.

A sort of a wraith of a BSDA - one moment it's all sweet fruit and earthy restraint, the next it's pungent, but not hot, hops and booze, integrated in such a way as to disavow you of the particular idea of either. Huh. Wow, this goes down pretty easily - if it wasn't already clear, the 9 points of alcohol sure do well to remain hidden in a tactile sense, and we all know that end game.

Another good De Ranke, they consistently have been making good beers. On tap at the Ginger Man. Like a good balanced stout owing to the roasted malt, chocolate malt, with yeast noticeable taking us back into the Belgian dark ale catagory. Very brown and lacey, with a bit of head. Above average mouthfeel.

On-tap in Ghent. The bartender called it a black beer. Sure it's black, but it's also 9% and Belgian. Recently I've had a few Belgian-style stouts and this beer by comparison was like a Belgian porter. The color is more dark brown and red when held to the light. The flavor has creamy, light cocoa with sweet spice. Cool beer. I like.

330ml bottle courtesy of a Beermasons subscription, poured into a Redoak globe style glass.

Has a very deep brown colour with a nice looking beige head of foam that has some streaky lacing to it and while the foam was large, it didn't fall away super quick.

Smells firstly of chocolate and in a smooth and not over the top manner. Some banana is there as well, along with plum. Smell starts to get a bit boozy later on, mixed with a bit of yeast.

Decently yeasty, it has some hint of the dark fruits in the nose but not a lot. It does avoid tasting boozy, which was a bit of a worry with some of the smell.

Body is well matched for the beer style, relatively well balanced finish to it, given the size and the style.

Good solid beer, flavours don't really match the level of the smell and that is the only let-down, and it is only small.
