Notes/Commercial Description:
Based on an extinct yet favorite tipple of the De Ranke owners, Nino Bacelle and Guido Devos, De Ranke Kriek emulates the famed Oud Kriekenbier from the defunct Crombé brewery in Zottegem. De Ranke Kriek is a mixture of two blended soured pale ales and Girardin lambic, all steeped in whole fresh cherries from Poland and then aged for six months. A unique and much sought after Kriekenbier.

Bright cherry red color yields a cloudy body but a bright white head of intense fizz. There's a tart cherry nose but mostly I get a strong mineral rock aroma. The flavor is light, tart natural cherry sweet but the minerally taste comes rushing through. It's like sucking on a rock. The feel is easy, not too sour but slightly acidic. I love a sour or a lambic or for that matter nearly every fruit based beer but not this one.

from bottle cap: EXP 09/06/17
A: tahiti treat!; cranberry juice; translucent
S: kind of wet cardboard, not getting much cherry or much of anything
T: tart but not too much; not a lot of cherry character and what is there is pretty lean; slightly musty finish that is not appealing; just a touch of sourness; not a lot of flavour but what's there is quite interesting; finishes fast
M: light bodied, elegant,
O: This beer really doesn't do much for me at all. Not a lot of flavour or complexity, very little aroma, beautiful mouthfeel but all-in-all kind of disappointing. Did I miss something/ Drink it too soon?

750 ml Bottle Consumed 4/26/14

A: 4.5 Pours reddish pink with a fairly large light pink head that dissipates quickly. Pretty hazy.

S: 4.5 Lots of tart cherries and funk as soon as the beer hits the glass. Belgian yeast is in the background with a little vanilla and oak.

T: 4 Quite tart at first with a bit of sweetness following. Mostly get cherries (and maybe some raspberries), oak, and a bit of funk. Lemon and herbs show up later on as well. Pleasant medicinal flavor at the end with some light bitterness too.

M: 4 Seems a little light at first, but opens up a bit and coats the palate after a moment. Has a nice, dry finish.

O: 4.25 Really nice beer all around. I really like the way the acidity and fruit play off one another while remaining balanced.

Bottle to tulip. Thanks to Jake_ramrod for the share.

A. Bright ruby red. Almost translucent, with some haziness. Ours a thick, light red fine-bubble head that retreats to a rim and film.

S. Tart. Sour yeast and light malts. A little fruity.

T. Tart. Sour yeast, neutral oak, cherries, persimmons, dust, and a little mineral.

M. High carbonation. Very smooth. Light body. A little syrupy.

O. A very nice sour kreik. A little syrupy but this ale holds it own with some of the heavy hitters from Belgium. he price seems reasonable. If I were in the mood for a kriek I would likely go for this again. This is likely something I would not keep in the cellar. Aging may help, but it seems good to go.
