Lambic - Fruit |  7.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Based on an extinct yet favorite tipple of the De Ranke owners, Nino Bacelle and Guido Devos, De Ranke Kriek emulates the famed Oud Kriekenbier from the defunct Crombé brewery in Zottegem. De Ranke Kriek is a mixture of two blended soured pale ales and Girardin lambic, all steeped in whole fresh cherries from Poland and then aged for six months. A unique and much sought after Kriekenbier.

Big thanks goes out to hero27 for sending me this bottle as an extra. You over did it, Eric, and I thank you!

Pours a clear vibrant reddish color into a pint glass. The slightly pink but mostly white head fizzles out quickly, leaving little to nothing behind. No lacing either. The color is beautiful, and the lack of head is understandable. The first glass is clear as day, and subsequent glasses get cloudier and cloudier, until the final, yeast filled glass is poured, at which point the color changes from beautiful red, to murky brown with red tint.

The nose is huge on the cherry notes. I'm not the worlds biggest cherry fan but I totally dig this. Tart unripened cherries dominate, and in teh background I detect a light woody character, along with a light wild yeast funk.

The taste is acidic and sour. A light woody character comes out again, but the focal point is tart cherries. The acidity only gains strength as the brew warms. Finishs tart and dry.

Mouthfeel is light to medium, with a crisp acidity. Drinkability is great.

Overall, not my favorite Lambic in the world, but definitely up there. This is a fantastic representation of a Kriek, and by far the best that I've had so far. Thanks a bunch Eric for sending me this amazing extra!

Bottle to tulip. Thanks to Jake_ramrod for the share.

A. Bright ruby red. Almost translucent, with some haziness. Ours a thick, light red fine-bubble head that retreats to a rim and film.

S. Tart. Sour yeast and light malts. A little fruity.

T. Tart. Sour yeast, neutral oak, cherries, persimmons, dust, and a little mineral.

M. High carbonation. Very smooth. Light body. A little syrupy.

O. A very nice sour kreik. A little syrupy but this ale holds it own with some of the heavy hitters from Belgium. he price seems reasonable. If I were in the mood for a kriek I would likely go for this again. This is likely something I would not keep in the cellar. Aging may help, but it seems good to go.

an excellent kriek specimen here, like waffle cherries from dennys, or rather pie filling cherries, bright red in color, just like the fruit that shades it. heady too, an inch or so high and surprisingly white for a pink beer. haze and some little yeast stones, pebbles i should say, sexy all up. the nose here is semisweet cherries, the label says only 30% lambic blended, they probably could have taken this to 40, at least for my palate, not as sour as it could be, but pleasantly tart and mouthwatering nose, better and better as it warms. the fruit is desserty, long lasting, and only a little sugar laden. tartness doesn't show up until the very end, but it is clearly lambic, oaky, open fermented, and funked out as it is puckery, a joy to drink, where the sweetness just balances. moderate carbonation is appropriate, more of a winter kriek for me, but a very well made one, and probably worth the 15 bucks they ask for it. refreshing but medium bodied, and somewhat of an all day fruit beer, where the sour and the sugar find a happy and patient equilibrium. solid example of the style, cool blending, and suitable for cellaring.
