Notes/Commercial Description:
Based on an extinct yet favorite tipple of the De Ranke owners, Nino Bacelle and Guido Devos, De Ranke Kriek emulates the famed Oud Kriekenbier from the defunct Crombé brewery in Zottegem. De Ranke Kriek is a mixture of two blended soured pale ales and Girardin lambic, all steeped in whole fresh cherries from Poland and then aged for six months. A unique and much sought after Kriekenbier.

Big thanks goes out to hero27 for sending me this bottle as an extra. You over did it, Eric, and I thank you!

Pours a clear vibrant reddish color into a pint glass. The slightly pink but mostly white head fizzles out quickly, leaving little to nothing behind. No lacing either. The color is beautiful, and the lack of head is understandable. The first glass is clear as day, and subsequent glasses get cloudier and cloudier, until the final, yeast filled glass is poured, at which point the color changes from beautiful red, to murky brown with red tint.

The nose is huge on the cherry notes. I'm not the worlds biggest cherry fan but I totally dig this. Tart unripened cherries dominate, and in teh background I detect a light woody character, along with a light wild yeast funk.

The taste is acidic and sour. A light woody character comes out again, but the focal point is tart cherries. The acidity only gains strength as the brew warms. Finishs tart and dry.

Mouthfeel is light to medium, with a crisp acidity. Drinkability is great.

Overall, not my favorite Lambic in the world, but definitely up there. This is a fantastic representation of a Kriek, and by far the best that I've had so far. Thanks a bunch Eric for sending me this amazing extra!

Pours ruby, hazy, half finger light pinkish head, quickly bombarded by fizziness, reduced to a line thin lacing.
Sour smell from afar, lots of lemon, some tart cherries also, but especially lots of balsamic vinegar and bit funky green hay and grass. A hint of barrel in the smell too, with a bit of old wine.
The 70% part of the beer dominates, with a huge sourness (at least at first), tons of lemon zest, with a nice cherry undertone, and again, vinegar. Barnyard funk straight from the start, lots of green hay, mold, funky herbs, gets more "rural" with horseblanket later on. Big chewy bitter grassiness, small hint of amaretto/marzipan. Unripe grape/dry wine in the finish, with a nice dry woody barrel showing too.
Light bodied, maybe a bit watery, decent carbonation. Aftertaste filled with funky notes, but with a minimum of cherry.
Not what you would expect from a "kriek", with the fruit present just to enrich a little bit, so don't get fooled by the name. Funkiness/sourness might seem a bit straightforward and simple too, but for me it just seemed.. perfected.

Bright cherry red color yields a cloudy body but a bright white head of intense fizz. There's a tart cherry nose but mostly I get a strong mineral rock aroma. The flavor is light, tart natural cherry sweet but the minerally taste comes rushing through. It's like sucking on a rock. The feel is easy, not too sour but slightly acidic. I love a sour or a lambic or for that matter nearly every fruit based beer but not this one.

from bottle cap: EXP 09/06/17
A: tahiti treat!; cranberry juice; translucent
S: kind of wet cardboard, not getting much cherry or much of anything
T: tart but not too much; not a lot of cherry character and what is there is pretty lean; slightly musty finish that is not appealing; just a touch of sourness; not a lot of flavour but what's there is quite interesting; finishes fast
M: light bodied, elegant,
O: This beer really doesn't do much for me at all. Not a lot of flavour or complexity, very little aroma, beautiful mouthfeel but all-in-all kind of disappointing. Did I miss something/ Drink it too soon?

750 ml Bottle Consumed 4/26/14

A: 4.5 Pours reddish pink with a fairly large light pink head that dissipates quickly. Pretty hazy.

S: 4.5 Lots of tart cherries and funk as soon as the beer hits the glass. Belgian yeast is in the background with a little vanilla and oak.

T: 4 Quite tart at first with a bit of sweetness following. Mostly get cherries (and maybe some raspberries), oak, and a bit of funk. Lemon and herbs show up later on as well. Pleasant medicinal flavor at the end with some light bitterness too.

M: 4 Seems a little light at first, but opens up a bit and coats the palate after a moment. Has a nice, dry finish.

O: 4.25 Really nice beer all around. I really like the way the acidity and fruit play off one another while remaining balanced.
