Poured into a tulip. A clear sunflower gold. Thick mounding white head. Decent retention and a nice lace. Aroma is hints of spice with an undertone of bread, a little grain and a lemon brightness. Taste is a light sweetness that quickly dries into a crisp, grainy and bitter finish. Nicely dry but with an odd astringency in the finish.
A decent saison. But I do enjoy a little farmhouse must in there somewhere.

Served chilled into a fluted tulip.

Pours a hazy bronze color with an inch plus of airy beige head that slowly recedes leaving moderate surface layer and lacing.

Very strong earthy, spicy aroma.

Very well balanced flavor profile. Earthy, grassy, hint of lemon with pepper and spices.

Medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation that gives it a crisp finish. Earthy aftertaste on the back of the tongue.

Overall, I really enjoyed this saison. I was afraid from the aromas it was going to focus too much on one flavor or another. However, it is very well balanced and pleasant.

375 ml poured into a Delirium Tremens snifter

A: Golden pale yellow with a white soapy head that quickly dissipated o a rim of medium bubbles with a few left over patches of small bubbles in the center.

S: Earthy hay like almost grassy hops on the nose with a gentle sweet malt character in the background. Definitely a hoppy example.

T: Sweet malt comes through then followed by the hops. Not as hoppy as I assumed. Definitely more malt forward with that typical musty farmhouse thing going on.

M: High carbonation adds a nice feel to the sweet malty beer and adds to the dryness. Nice bitterness lingers and is quite refreshing. Definitely feels thicker than a dry 5.5 % abv saison but saison yeast coupled with high carbonation can work wonders.

O: A nice malt forward, yet hoppy saison. Nice farmhouse character, drinkable and sessionable.

Poured into a Piraat tulip: cloudy with a thick white head. Smells yeasty and saisony. Not anything fantastic. Taste like white wine was mixed into the batch, which seems out of place considering the low abv. Taste does improve as it is drunk. Overall, interesting beer, but there are better saisons for the price.

Saisons are somewhat new to me, but it looks as though I chose a great one when I found a bottle of this at Whole Foods on Bowery and Houston.

Very smooth and refined, albeit pricey.

I would love to find a case of this stuff, but even at my goto craft brew suppliers it is really difficult to find this brew.

11.2 oz bottle was poured into a tulip glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a minimal head that reduced to a thin layer. It is a pale orange color with great clarity and bubbles coming up through the glass. Spotty lacing on glass as beer was drank.

Smell: Vanilla, pear, apple, powdery yeasty esters, spiciness, bready and pale malts, and Belgian candy.

Taste: Pear, apple, lemony, powdery yeast, spicy, pilsner and pale malts, some Belgian candy, and lingering mild bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied, a little chewy, a little dry, medium to high carbonation, and enjoyable.

Overall: This Saison is like a light triple. I was expecting more on the spicy and flavorful end, but was left short of my expectations. Still happy that it is a borderline triple.

Enjoyed in a new IPA glass over 20 minutes in an ocean sun.
Hemp emanates from the frothing bottle right upon opening.
Soapy pour, moderate cohesive retention, spotty lacing. Unfiltered opaque haze with visible, vigorous bubbling.
After hemp scents clear a bit, cloves and some resin and peanuts come through. Yeast kissed with lemon zest is sensible, too.
More citrus in the mouth. Chewy sourdough and sage. The nuttiness persists in the taste, as well. Ropey funk is rather unrelenting, though--some space for more of the apples and some added bright spice would be better.
For all the visible bubbles, it needs the buzz of more carbonation, since the relatively low alcohol won't cut through. The result is a rather flat, drab feel of cream on the tongue--it just slides back and once in the glottis, it's done.
Breaking this beer down into component assessments makes for the potential for an unfair review, overall. Because it is greater than the sum of its parts. De Ranke needs to balance its drugs more evenly, though--cut back on the ganja and add more booze.
