Notes/Commercial Description:
Gritty McDuff's Red Claws Ale is a what the Brits call a fine session beer: a smooth ale, not too strong and full of flavor. Red Claws Ale has a dark red-amber color; a full, round malt palate; nutty and roasted accents, and a delicate hop flavor that whispers with just a hint of floral finish. The perfect ale for a long afternoon in the pub with good friends and traditional fare.

Two finger head with fairly large sized bubbles, pours a brown copper with very large bubbles for carbonation, and minimal lacing.

Smells of faint light toast with sweet cheap sugar smells coming through to dominate. After a few sips though, it's impossible to nearly smell anything again.

Taste is an initial first good bread characteristic, biscuit thing going on but then quickly replaced by carbonation. Finish is very soda pop in feel and carbonation takes over. Afterfinish and wet play bring out some faint brown sugar but the beer feels incredibly fizzy.

I think I'll pass on this one.

Poured on-tap and served in a tumbler pint, the beer is a slightly hazy, dark, ruby copper coloring with no head. Aromas of scotch and dark sweet malts. Flavors are rich and roasted, with a dark caramel and sugar malt backbone. The aftertaste is roasty and subtle sweet tone, and it transitions to a clean, smooth finish. Midbodied, but light enough to not be imposing.

I can only assume this beer was named for the NBA D League team in Portland (not a bad team, by the way). The price was right ($3.99 for the bomber at my local Hannafords), but the beer was mediocre. Pretty enough, cherry amber color, medium tan head, a bit of lacing. Uninspiring sweet malt aroma. Faint taste of caramel, with a bitter background. Not very pleasant. Won't buy this again

Draught @ Brewpub: This one pours a dark amber color. There was very little of an off-white head on it, and about no lacing. The aroma is decent. Mainly some caramel malt. Some roastiness, smokiness and chocolate to the nose. The taste is good. Slightly bitter with a touch of a dry finish. Faint roast, caramel, no sweetness at all. Some earthy notes. Not bad.

22oz bottle poured into a Pint Glass.

Pours a dark reddish-copper with a dense ivory head that settles to a decent haze and leaves some spotty lacing. Muted aromas of sweet caramel malt and buttery bread with just a touch of spicy hops. Taste is similar to the nose, amber malt, butter, and earthy hops. Nothing special. Mouthfeel is smooth and fairly crisp, with a medium-thin body and decent carbonation. Unimpressive and fairly boring, no thanks.

22oz bomber brought back from ME by a buddy.

Appearance: Pours an attractive garnet with honey folds, a small white crown, minimal retention or lace.

Smell: Light candied fruit malt note and hop notes that come off like fuggle meets hallertau.

Taste: Lightly bitter herbal grassy hops over the light candied fruit malt notes. The malt offer a touch of sweetness that seems buttery but is soon masked by the hops.

Mouthfeel: Seltzer

Drinkability: Would be good but the mouthfeel sucks.

A Gritty's red claw is not to be confused with the ol' dry thumb.

Pours translucent, dull copper--it's really not an attractive hue. Finger width white head diminishes and leaves a few lacey splashes. All the ingredients for a snazzy lookin' brew are here--it's just an ugly color. Bonus points for the lobster holding a basketball on the label. I love when exoskeletal sea life hoop it up.

Smell is the highlight of this beer. Fruity esters and crystal malts spring forth to create a lively apple cinnamon aroma. Upon first sip I thought "wow, this is watery." My final sip I was still thinking "woe, this is watery." Taste follows the aroma albiet it in dulled down version.

I, and basketball playing lobsters everywhere, am let down.

Received a pint of medium amber brew. A slight spotty head, no true lace.

Some toasted malt and a touch of fruit in the nose. Some mineral notes as well.

A little lean on the flavor side, but that is ok. A very easy drinking beer, with toasted malt, some boiled grain, some moderate hop bitterness, a touch of sweetness, more like bread than fruit. Light bitter and malt in the finish. It works.

Seemsed a bit thin, appropriate carbonation.

Pure pub beer. Gritty's had this on tap and it fit the bill for a meal. Not overbearing, easy to drink. Worth a shot.

22 oz bomber from the Freeport brewery trucked back to CT from a Maine roadtrip, then poured into a pint glass.

Pours reddish brown minimal foma, little lacing. Cloudy pour.

Empty smell, kind of soapy. Blah.

Malty taste, bold-ish hop pokes through, but never bitters the beer. Clean but watery finish. Light in the mouth.

Good, but in a strange and unconvincing way. Not much to it. Much better selections available at Grittys.

22oz bomber recently purchased at RSVP.

Pours a clear amber color with a perfect sized head, fades at a decent rate.

The aroma is pretty much all sweet malt, nothing that really grabs your attention at all.

The taste is fairly uninspiring, caramel malt with a horrible bitter aftertaste, not good type of bitter either, it just kind of lingers there killing the palate, it does have good carbonation though.

Gritty McDuff's Red Claws Ale
22 oz brown bottle
Served in a 20 oz tulip glass

I picked up this bomber at a Hannaford's in Portland a few weeks ago. Pours a reddish amber with a decent head on top.

Malty with flavors of wheat toast. I also get some light fruit flavors, possibly apple. Some sips taste like fermented apple cider juice, which is rather unenjoyable.

The mouthfeel is soft with minimal carbonation. A pretty straightforward beer overall with a minimal hop presence. The mouthfeel is a tad thin for my liking.

Not worth pursuing, but drinkable.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pin glass.

The color is a clear copper with a slight finger of foamy white head with little lacing left on the glass.

The smell is a slight bit hoppy with a touch of some fruity flavors. Some slight apple and cinnamon mixed with a malt flavor that is holding it’s own. There is a slight bitterness that is in the backend but gone quickly before really getting a chance.

The feel of this beer is medium bodied and feels like a plain, average ale. It’s easy to get into and makes for an easy drinking beer and would be something that would go well

I've had this bottle sitting in my cellar since the start of basketball season. I decided to crack it open tonight, as I didn't want it to get too old. I'm pouring as much of the 22 ounces that will fit into a Gritty's logo glass. It has a light brown color, like tarnished copper. It's fairly clear. There is a big brown head of bubbles. Lots of carbonation is clinging to the sides of the glass and rising up to the top. There is no lacing. It has the aroma of caramel malt and maybe a hint of burnt toast. The flavor is more like a buttery brown ale than a red ale. I know Gritty's can make a fairly decent red ale (see my review of their Irish Red) but the dropped the ball with this brew. There is some caramel and a little bitterness, but not much else works in its favor. The off-tastes of butter and a bit of vinegar don't help. The mouthfeel is rather poor. It's watery, but also sticky without being sweet. The buttery feeling just doesn't do it for me. This beer is far from a drain pour, I will finish the bottle. If I ever find myself at a Red Claws game, I may even order a cup of it, but otherwise I will avoid this beer. I'd much rather go for the Pub Style or Best Bitter if I wanted a Gritty's brew.

12 oz bottle poured into a white wine glass · fridge temp · Enjoy before January 2012

Appearance: A great amber color with a nice brown-nes and aggressive 2.5" head that is ivory in color. Good retention and great lacing. Transparent beer.

Smell: Tons of caramel and nougat.

Taste: More of that same caramel taste comes through with some cereal grain as well. A slight hop bitterness in there too

Mouthfeel: Clean, crisp and lots of caramel malts. Nicely carbonated and buttery.

Overall: A great drinker that doesn't have a TON of hop bitterness like most beers these days. I could easily do a 12 pack.
