Notes/Commercial Description:
Maine's Best IPA is a unique blend of American hops with a British body utilizing English 2-Row Pale malts. This IPA starts with a hoppy aroma and taste; ending with a sweet finish. Plenty of Munich and caramalts are used to give the beer that golden hue. There are fifty-six pounds of Cascade Hops used in each 50 barrel batch that is brewed! Then we finish the beer with Willamette & Warrior Hops, (Warrior is a high-alpha acid variety of hops).

Had this on tap at the Freeport location. Overall, a so-so IPA and probably not one I would have again. Main problem is lack of hops on the nose. For an IPA on tap, I expected much more. Just an average beer with no special notes worth mentioning.
If you found this review to be lacking but unoffensive, then you know how I felt about this beer.

From Notes on 10-17-13, On-Tap at the brewpub.

A - Pours a mostly clear gold orange with half a finger of white head, little lacing.
S - Floral aroma light citrus, a decent bready malt.
T - Bigger bread malt base than you pick up in the aroma, cristp, grassy, some dank pine and a little lemon zest.
M - Dry, semi-bitter, and a little sticky.
O - Decent English, but calling it Maine's best is a bit presumptuous.

Gritty Maines' Best IPA (A Maine budget IPA tasted vs Mission St (budget CA IPA) 3.8

OK I am re-tasting this against another Maine brew Gritty's Autumn Ale.
I think I got a bad metallic bottle on round 1, this second bottle is better so I am upping my rating.

A: Hazed, good thick head, fades fast, but leaves sheets and sails of lace. Look is best part. 3.75

S: 2nd try - the aroma was more in line with IPA style. Offers malt, wood, biscuit, hay, and tea-like herbs. It needs to warm. When it does, it's mostly malt, fruity and bread. 3.25

T: Follows the smell but an improvement. More caramel, such that sweet and bitter fight it out in the finish. It finishes clean, but average. Sweet and buttery for too much of the profile. However, I'd take this over a Sam Adams lager or mainstream brew. 3.5

M: Medium to thin. Second bottle finishes nicely, leaves me in good place. First bottle slightly metallic finish. 3.25

More of a pale ale, definitely ENGLISH in style, a bit bland, in line with other English styled pale ales. 3.25

Got this in a variety pack when I was in Maine, along with Halloween Ale , Best Brown, and Pub Style.
Pours a nice orange/amber color with a little cloudiness. I got 2 fingers of a creamy head that left a good bit of lacing. Was able to float the bottle cap(this is my daughters game she likes to play when I open a beer) on the head.
Decent hoppy aroma, not overpowering.

medium bodied overall, similar to other Gritty's brews. Not quite as much carbonation as a their best brown ale.
Has the same buttery flavor of other Gritty's beers, which I happen to like.
I think it has a fairly refreshing taste. Not overpowering.
Mouthfeel is similar to Gritty's Halloween Ale, but not quite as oily.

Overall I'd say it not the best IPA I've had, but nowhere near the worst.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Best before date of June 2014.

A: Golden-orange in color. Great clarity. Pillowy off-white head retains very well. Little foamy clumps of lacing.

S: Grassy and floral hops. Hint of lemon peel. Butterscotch. Rich malt base of caramel and toffee. Buttered biscuit.

T: Wave of earthy hop bitterness. Pine, bark, and bitter herbs. Hint of lemon peel locked deep within. Intensely bitter. Tea leaves. Caramel, toffee, and toasted bread from the malt. Butterscotch. Intensely bitter hop finish of dry herbs lingers with a buttery aftertaste.

M: Full medium body. Rich and a bit mouth coating. Hop oil astringency. Light scrubbing carbonation.

O: Perceived bitterness is quite a bit higher than I expected. To call this an American IPA is a mistake. It leans very hard to the English side of things, despite its use of american hop strains. Pretty much what you'd expect from one of the older Maine microbreweries. Another ringwood English IPA. Not bad if that's what you're looking for, but the average American palate doesn't really appreciate beers like this anymore.
