Notes/Commercial Description:
Maine's Best IPA is a unique blend of American hops with a British body utilizing English 2-Row Pale malts. This IPA starts with a hoppy aroma and taste; ending with a sweet finish. Plenty of Munich and caramalts are used to give the beer that golden hue. There are fifty-six pounds of Cascade Hops used in each 50 barrel batch that is brewed! Then we finish the beer with Willamette & Warrior Hops, (Warrior is a high-alpha acid variety of hops).

Appearance: Orange with too much head that lingers way too long.

Aroma: Bland...blah

Taste: Very weak. Watery with very little in the taste department to even speak (or write about).

Overall: If this is Maine's "best IPA" as the label claims, then is Maine's worst IPA stale urine?! Simply put, this beer reminds me of Killian's Red...in other words, bland, watery, and forgettable. If you truly want a great IPA, go for Ballast Point Sculpin. NEXT!!

This is ironically named. It should be called Maine's Worst IPA. This beer is a big mess of caramel and buttery Ringwood yeast. The bitterness is average, the hop aroma is non-existent and the hop flavor is hidden by the fracas between the butter and caramel flavors. This is just down right awful. If you're looking for a new IPA to try, this isn't it. It's obvious this beer was created completely out of marketing and it has failed miserably. Gritty's needs to wise up, build their own brewery and stop using Shipyard to contract all their 12oz beers.

this is pretty terrible stuff, which I tried hard to find reasons to like, but didn't come up with much. it pours copper colored and almost totally flat. its got a nose of watered down English malt and a lazy combination of haphazard hop varieties and additions. like the brewmaster through as much hops in as he could, without consideration of acid or oil properties, boil times, or anything else. its sloppy tasting too, watery and dull, not what an ipa should be. at first I thought this was a product of the English malts, not an American ipa maybe, but that's not the case, its just a mess all over the shop. no carbonation kills it for me, I would have liked to see a little less body too, but this was a touch pint to choke down, and one I would steer clear of. it filled me up before a nice meal too, ugh.

Wow. Can't believe the high scores.

Got a flight at the Gritty McDuff's in Portland ME:
Halloween Ale
Cask Best Bitter
Maine's Best IPA
Pub Style

All were exactly the same amber color, with the same head. The aroma was exactly the same, except for the Pub Style. I also had a pint of their Black Fly Stout, which fortunately did have a different color.

I iterated between their Halloween Ale, their IPA, and their Cask Bitter. All were exactly the same, except that the Cask Bitter was slightly warmer.

When I suggested to the waitress that the beers might have been mis-poured, she said that they were correct, that she was also a bartender, and that she could tell from the color of the pours.

Assuming what I drank was correct ...

I found the beer was watery, and it was as though they used poor quality water. All their beers had an off after-taste ... as though their was a Gritty McDuffs flavor they added to all their beers (including their stout)

Mouth feel was watery. And a little evervescent ... a slight bite from the c02. Interesting, even the cask best bitter had a slight CO2 bite to it.

Very sorry I went to this pub. Food was ok. But the beers were mediocre to poor.
