Maine's Best IPA is a unique blend of American hops with a British body utilizing English 2-Row Pale malts. This IPA starts with a hoppy aroma and taste; ending with a sweet finish. Plenty of Munich and caramalts are used to give the beer that golden hue. There are fifty-six pounds of Cascade Hops used in each 50 barrel batch that is brewed! Then we finish the beer with Willamette & Warrior Hops, (Warrior is a high-alpha acid variety of hops).

12 oz. bottle poured into a Libby stout glass because I was feeling zany.

Appearance: Pours a mostly clear dark amber with a one-and-a-half finger white head. Lots of lacing.

Aroma: Smell is mostly caramel malt with some citrus.

Taste: I sense some apricot, grapefruit juice and lemon along with some grass and pine.

Mouthfeel: A little on the lighter side for an IPA.

Overall: Not Maine's best IPA, but not a terrible one. Kind of an average beer from a brewer that makes lots of kind of average beers.

If this beer isn't skunked then it is god awful! Smells and tastes like vinegar. That's all.

12oz bottle as part of the Christmas mix pack.

Pours a golden color with a tinge of amber, smallish head that doesn't stick around or on the glass.

Smell is heavy on the caramel malt front with an upfront sweetness to the nose, hops are not very strong, slight metallic aroma.

Taste starts out with a mild hop presence, kind of piney but quickly tempered by the sweet malt, carbonation level is medium, very slick feel in the mouth, almost buttery, for as sweet of an IPA this can be it does finish with a drier than expected finish.

"Maine's Best IPA"? Maybe when they first started and competition was pretty absent, now I can think of plenty IPA's from Maine that are better than this best.

On tap in Portland location.

This is more in the style of an English ale. Weaker carbonation, lots of malt flavor. Hops are stronger on the nose than in the taste. Easy to drink.

Wow. Can't believe the high scores.

Got a flight at the Gritty McDuff's in Portland ME:
Halloween Ale
Cask Best Bitter
Maine's Best IPA
Pub Style

All were exactly the same amber color, with the same head. The aroma was exactly the same, except for the Pub Style. I also had a pint of their Black Fly Stout, which fortunately did have a different color.

I iterated between their Halloween Ale, their IPA, and their Cask Bitter. All were exactly the same, except that the Cask Bitter was slightly warmer.

When I suggested to the waitress that the beers might have been mis-poured, she said that they were correct, that she was also a bartender, and that she could tell from the color of the pours.

Assuming what I drank was correct ...

I found the beer was watery, and it was as though they used poor quality water. All their beers had an off after-taste ... as though their was a Gritty McDuffs flavor they added to all their beers (including their stout)

Mouth feel was watery. And a little evervescent ... a slight bite from the c02. Interesting, even the cask best bitter had a slight CO2 bite to it.

Very sorry I went to this pub. Food was ok. But the beers were mediocre to poor.

Deep amber color (borderline light brown). Clear. Lasting but little (spotty) lace.

Plenty of caramel aroma like a true British IPA. Smooth and round.

Quite dry but still with lots caramel. Spritzy but with small bubbles. Far more bitter than the smell suggests. Rich body. In a word, very British.
