Notes/Commercial Description:
Maine's Best IPA is a unique blend of American hops with a British body utilizing English 2-Row Pale malts. This IPA starts with a hoppy aroma and taste; ending with a sweet finish. Plenty of Munich and caramalts are used to give the beer that golden hue. There are fifty-six pounds of Cascade Hops used in each 50 barrel batch that is brewed! Then we finish the beer with Willamette & Warrior Hops, (Warrior is a high-alpha acid variety of hops).

Pours medium orange with a cream-colored head of 1 finger. Reduces to a ring, some splashy lace.

Ringwood yeast brings up the butter in the nose, some toasted malt, a little caramel.

Toasted malt with some of the buttery note, some bread, some mild fruit, and some assertive clean bitterness. I want a bit more depth and dimension to my hops here. Some herbal notes and real long bitter finish. This doesn't say IPA, just bitter amber to me. Still, knowing what this brewer is all about, the beer tastes fresh, and the flavors are bright.

Medium bodied, tingly carbonation.

Not the IPA we all want, and if you judge by the label, not a good representation of the style. But a blind taste test leaves this with ok drinkability. Nothing I'd drainpour, but nothing I'd want to ran a six of either. I'd have this as a pint at their pub, but would not chase this down.

Appearance: Orange with too much head that lingers way too long.

Aroma: Bland...blah

Taste: Very weak. Watery with very little in the taste department to even speak (or write about).

Overall: If this is Maine's "best IPA" as the label claims, then is Maine's worst IPA stale urine?! Simply put, this beer reminds me of Killian's Red...in other words, bland, watery, and forgettable. If you truly want a great IPA, go for Ballast Point Sculpin. NEXT!!

a - Pour is somewhat hazy, moderately small head, 1 inch or so.

s - Hops definitely making an appearance, though for some reason they are a little off putting.

t - Some citrus qualities to the beer.

m - pretty evenly bodied, extremely drinkable.

o - Not the greatest IPA, but good for what it is.

I am a fan of most Grittys beers, so I was excited to try Maine's Best IPA.
I would say it is a good IPA but it does have a few flaws.
1. The Ringwood yeast is wrong for this style, something cleaner would be more apropriate. As the beer warms up in the glass the butterscotch comes through.
2. The Warrior Hops as a flavor hop is rather curious. This beer could really benefit from some aroma additions.
Next time I want an IPA, I will pass on Grittys "Maines Best IPA" , and go for the Stowaway IPA from Baxter Brewing which deserves the title "Maines Best IPA"

A 6.8% IPA is always a gamble...throwing the dice on a hoppy brew at this abv will give wierd results. As to our buds at Shippy doing the gruntwork, Kudos; this is available at most pharmacy-beer-suppliers for a good price; and for that price we can drink all night and enjoy. Yes Orangy, yes Bubbly and gives a good head...better on tap, but works nevertheless. Not bitter, nor back-bacony, you need this as a daily tap.

Poured from a bottle into a tumbler pint, the beer is a bright, vibrant, copper-brown coloring with a thin, filmy coating of white sparsely covering the surface. Aromas of toffee sweetness and a subtle, peppery, dry hopping. Subtle nose, but very balanced. Flavors of a more resiny hopping, with a solid, roasted caramel backbone. Palate reminiscent of an English IPA. Very balanced. Rich and bitter throughout. The smooth flavors are kept manageable by a lighter body. The aftertaste has a more hopcentric feel, with spices and floral aromas throughout. Rich and bitter finish. Very tasty.
