Draught in Freeport: This one poured an opaque, almost black color. There was about a finger of a tan head on it that left lots of lacing. The nose is nice. Some sweet chocolate and roasted notes. The taste is also good. A bit of roastiness and coffee, and some chocolate with a subdued sweetness. Some bitterness also. Nicely balanced.

From the 650 ml. bottle. Sampled on June 15, 2013

The pour is almost entirely black with a long-lasting soft mocha head. I can see the slightest of brown hues while holding it to the light.

The aroma is vibrant with dark malts, oatmeal, barley, yeast, coffee, and a twinge of hops sneaking up on the backside.

The body is medium, soft, and velvety.

The taste gets better and better with each sip. The main features are dark oatmeal grain, sweetness and coffee up front and then the biting hop bitterness comes up from behind just like it does on the nose and lingers for a couple of heartbeats at the finale. This beer improves as it warms so let it sit out a bit before drinking it.

In a pint glass the beer was a dark brown, nearly black color. There was a modest tan head that was very sticky.

The aroma was roasted malt and cooked oatmeal.

The taste was espresso coffee, very bitter, almost like burnt coffee. Some dark chocolate. Oatmeal background.

I liked this beer and found the bitterness enhancing the taste. Will drink this again.

22oz bottle purchased as a single from somewhere localish. Gold foiled cap.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a 1/4" dark tan head over the almost opaque reddish brown brew. Head holds on well, with sticky froth. Aroma is rich toasted oats.

Taste is sweet darkness upfront, slight fruitiness in the middle, rounded bitterness in the close. Seeing a somewhat off-putting bitterness pretty much from beginning to end that I could do without. Mouthfeel is smooth, and drinkability is pretty good. Grows on me through the bottle.

Very dark brown body, ruby highlights, and three fingers of light tan head. Low grade lacing.

Aroma I has plenty of coffee with milk, some oatmeal, and a hint of chocolate.

Taste begins with big roasted coffee. Dash of milk. Nicely rolled oats. Mild bitterness.

Smooth mouthfeel, stops short of slick.

A solid oatmeal stout to celebrate a New England beer landmark.

Poured from a bottle into a nonic, the beer is a mahogany highlighted dark brown-to-black coloring with a frothy, light, tall, cream colored head with a decent cling. Aromas of mocha coffee and bittersweet chocolate, with some nutty and creamy highlights, too. Flavors are rich and roasty initially, with a solid bitterness of coffee and dark chocolate in the backbone. Creamy overlays and a solid dose of dry, peppery hops make this a robust, full flavor on the palate. Creamy, smooth bodied, with a great lacing left along the glass. The aftertaste is bitter and rich, with a slight char characteristic. Smooth, clean finish with a slight bitter linger. Solid brew.

A: The beer is close to being black in color and appears dark brownish red in color when held up to a bright light. It poured with a quarter finger high beige head that gradually died own, leaving some lacing on the surface and sides of the glass and a collar around the sides.
S: Light aromas of roasted malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell but is a lot stronger and has lots of flavors of roasted malts along with hints of burnt coffee beans and a light amount of bitterness. The roasted flavors linger through the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied and smooth on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. The beer becomes smoother as it warms up.
O: This beer is quite roasty for an oatmeal stout but is nice if you like bold flavors.

Pours deep brown with a decent off-white foam head. Some spotty lace.

Rich dark roasted malt aroma. Coffee, and some charred sugars in the nose.

This brew is a 2-stage drinker. First stage is dark roasted malt, some oatmeal nuttiness, coffee, grain, even maybe a touch of molasses. Then it turns bitter on you. the bitterness has an aspirin quality to it that kicks this beer out of balance. I'm glad it is not pine nor citrus, but it is still a touch out of whack. Bomber worked here, but by the time I got to the end of it I was ready to move on.

Full bodied. Good carbonation.

I was ok with this one. tasty, but a little too bitter as the palate cleared. to be blunt, it was off-putting. The sugars in the malt weren't so over the top that this needed a clean bitter outrigger. A bit flawed, but overall worthy.

A: Pours an opaque but clear very dark amber in color (like cola, almost black) with moderate to heavy amounts of visible carbonation and some dark brown highlights. The beer has a finger tall creamy light tan head that slowly reduces to a thin film covering the majority of the surface of the beer and a thick ring of larger bubbles at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of roasted malts with some distinct oat as well. Very light notes of coffee.

T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of roasted malts and oat with a very light amount of sweetness. That is followed by some light notes of coffee and dark chocolate that leads to a light to moderate amounts of gentle bitterness which fades slowly.

M: Medium bodied with just heavier than moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth and creamy.

O: Very enjoyable and easy to drink - there is a certain lightness to the flavors/mouthfeel that make this one go down pretty easy.

Appearance: pours a black color with a two finger tan colored head.

Smell: roasted malt and bread are the main aromas picked up by the nose.

Taste: roasted malt, oats, pumpernickel bread, a hint of prunes, and a mild bitterness. Some buttery tones arrive late.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied. Smooth at the start, almost velvety at the finish. The malt and bready flavors linger long into the aftertaste.

Overall: this was a very enjoyable oatmeal stout. Easy to drink and nicely satisfying. Worthy of a try.
