Notes/Commercial Description:
You can't put summer in a bottle, but we may have come close! When the weather gets warm we roll out our summer seasonal, Vacationland Summer Ale. Vacationland is an Extra Special Golden Ale that's light in color but full-bodied, with a snappy hop finish. A bit of extra time in the conditioning tank rounds out and mellows the ale. We use generous portions of pale malt with just a touch of wheat malt to give VSA unique flavor that?s richer than most summer brews. Cascade leaf hops add a delicate and forward hop character as well. It's the perfect brew for all things summer.

Pours a beautiful golden orange. Super clear, lots of little bubbles racing up the center of the glass. Exactly the body of the beer I want to be drinking on the first day above 90* this summer. Head is over-abundant, about seven fingers worth in a tall glass. I let it settle and poured more, yielding more perfectly white foam. Perhaps Im serving it just a bit too warm.

Smells of sweet pale malted barley. Maybe a vague dry fruitiness, but Im not sure.

Doesnt taste like anything special, it also has a certain flavor similar to what I find in my home-brewed beers. Not terribly crisp or refreshing, not overly flavorful. The flavor that is there I guess is just that of the pale malt, and maybe a little something reminiscent of perhaps banana from the yeast. Has a sort of almost dirty taste.

About the right amount of carbonation, could maybe use a little less. Could have been a little bit crisper, but maybe I didnt serve it quite cold enough. While not incredibly off-putting, I can think of plenty of beers Id rather have on a hot summer day vacationing.

Pours a bright amber and sports a light coat of creamy white. Champagne like carbonation. Aromas are hoppy and somewhat fruity in a citrusy way. In the mouth the beer cleanses and scrubs with its ample bubbleage. Flavors favor hop and the beer is all around fairly light and simple. Just like the season I'd guess. Nothing serious here just a zippy pale ale that goes down easy and leaves a bitter tang as it trails off onto the gentle finish.

This is a pretty nice beer. It's an orange color with a small to medium head. It has a floral, grassy aroma. The taste is sweet and malty, with some nice hoppiness. Good, assertive mouthfeel and very drinkable. Where I live in Maine, I think it's comparable in taste to Geary's Summer.

I've had this on draft and on bottle.

Golden Light in color, slightly cloudy (Unfiltered) Good head retention and some lacing. Wheat and citrus smell. Smooth initial mouth feel but becomes harsh on the tongue. Finishes with a slightly bitterness. Very light but has good flavor.

22 oz brown bomber, thanks to bennybrew!

Decent lacing on the glass, bright pale golden hue. Tight crispness deep with in the moderate body makes the mouth feel smooth. Smells and tastes a bit buttery from the yeast, the pale malt flavour provides a thin base of sweetness. Ample bitterness drops a metallic flavour on the palate. Lingering buttery flavour in the finish with some sweetness.

Tastes like a best bitter to me, I’d swear there is a good amount of wheat in there as well. Good drinking either way.

poured from bottle into a stein

Appearance: Light Amber Color with one finger of white head. Lacing on the glass was spotty at best. A lot of carbonation could be seen with this brew, and was evident by a head that lasted a long time.

Smell: Very citusy and intense hops(like most of Gritty's beers)

Mouthfeel/Taste: Well balanced and light bodied, although I felt with intense hops it was heavier than most summer ales.

Overall: This was an enjoyable beer. Not my first choice for a summer ale, but I would not turn it waway if offered or it was all that was there. The intense hops that I find with most of the Grtty's beers was evident here, and this summer ale reminded me more of an IPA.

12 oz bottle. Pours a clear golden amber with a large white head. Lots of retention.

Smells slightly of caramel and a hint estery.

Scant amount of pale malt turns slightly bitter and the goes a little buttery, like 99% of their beers do. Bittering hops are not quite on. This seems like a very wayward brew.

Thin mouthfeel with little texture..

A pour out for me.

Gritty's- Vacationland

A- Deep, clear golden orange with a huge biscuity head. Thick lacing down the glass.
S- Buttery caramel and toffee malt with citrus and bready grains.
T- Very buttery grainy malt, like an English Bitter, with nice sweet caramel and semi sweet lemon citrus. Touch of dry grassy straw hops.
M- Very smooth and buttery creamy. Nice sweet and slight citrusy bitter hop bite in the end.

Overall- Much better than I expected! Almost ESB'ish to me. Quite buttery and drinkable!

2 12 oz bottles poured into a large mug.

Pale Golden, mildly active. 2" thick white head, decent retention.

Picking up on sour notes, wheaty and hopped.

Taste has a good balance of wheaty flavors and hoppy bitterness, slight sour effect.

Feels thin and light, mildly active pop.Easy to drink.

This pours an amber gold with a medium tan head. The smell is pretty aromatic with a sweet malt and floral aroma. The taste is very hoppy, like an ESB, with some sweet malt that's very good. The m/f is light with a nice balance that makes this a very good summer beer that could be a session beer in the hot months. Cheers.

Thanks to my man Hoyt for bringing this back from Maine.

22oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

Pours a clear gold with a 1/4" head with great retention. Smells is hops and wheat similar to a german pilsner. Taste is mild hops and wheat; bitter and unbalanced; even a little sour in the finish (maybe yeast gone bad?). Mouthfeel is light with absolutely no carbonation.

I did not enjoy this beer at all. Given the sour taste I suspect it may have gone bad.

Pours a clear straw yellow color, head dissipates very quickly. Smells of grassy and slightly floral malt, some citrus fruits, lavender? Tastes of grassy and grainy sweet malt followed by a fairly muted bitterness. Finishes fairly sweet with just a touch of metal. Fairly thin mouthfeel, has a decent crispness to it.

Not a bad beer, crisp and refreshing. Didn't enjoy the finish too much, leaves an undesirable dryness. Overall, decent.

Poured from a 22 ounce bomber into a perfect pint glass. Pours golden white foam, semi hazy. Malty smell, citrus too. Light malty taste with a bitter lemon rind hoppy flavor. Lingers citrus taste. Has a minor soapy taste. Not the best beer out there.

A- Golden yellow. Light white head from a tap into a pint glass at Gritty McDuff's in Freeport.

S- Hops, spice and barley.

T- Somewhat bitter. A slight buttery taste. Presence of hops.

M- Very smooth and sweet.

D- Goes down easy enough.

Other- Only average. Ive had better summer ales (from other Maine breweries no less) that taste much better.

Gritty's comes through again. Summer Ales just aren't the kind of beers that knock your socks off, but this is already my favorite example of the style. It does everything you want a summer beer to do, without taxing your patience with too many orange peels or a bushel of lemongrass. I could happily purchase a case of this beer to have a summer ale on hand for whenever the mood (or weather) struck me, but it might not last too long.

Appearance - Vacationland pours a copper-golden hue, a mite bit darker than its peers in the style. The quantity of wheat in many summer beers often lends a cloudy haze, but this is beer is crystal clear. My pour resulted in a brief, fluffy head that quickly receded.

Smell - Nothing remarkable going on here, just a citrus, floral whiff. Pleasant enough and not overwhelming; some summers really shove a lemon wedge up your nose, but this isn't acrid.

Taste - Crisp (but not overwhelmingly bitter hops) stand out in the flavor. The malt character is pretty light but supplies a bit of sweet caramel to the taste. It's pretty clear that the citrus qualities of the beer are incidental to hops; there's no fruit being squeezed into this beer. Has a very nice wheat finish. Definitely wheat in here, but not a tremendous amount. Tastes very fresh.

Mouthfeel - It's fairly smooth and has a bit of a fuller body that one expects from a summer ale, but it's still relatively light. Carbonation is crisp enough for refreshment without turning Vacationland into beer soda.

Drinkability - Hey, this is an easy-drinking beer. I wouldn't complain if this were the only thing in the house, particularly on a balmy day. It goes down nicely and has enough beer character to keep you interested.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle with an expiration ndate of Nov 2013. Sampled on July 20, 2013.

It pours yellow to light amber with a short-lived white head.

The aroma is fairly malty, buiscuity, and has a melted butter ester to it.

The body is light to medium.

The taste has a biscuit malt and butter flavor up front and then there is a sharp but also mellow bitterness on the end. Pretty typical summer style brew.
