Roughneck Red with its beautiful color and underlying malty sweetness, the Irish Red ale style is readily apparent. The Chinook, Cascade and Mount Hood hops create a wonderful aroma and flavor combination.

Wellhead Brewery Roughneck Red

Dense beige foam on a clear medium red body. Nice lacing.

Nose of citrus, caramels, biscuit, wheat toast, herbal hop spice.

Palette follows closely with the nose, but giving off some extra malt and a bit of grapefruit from the Chinook hops. A decent amount of residual sugar is left, but the hops provide enough balance to keep it relatively even flavored.

Soft and slightly chewy on the palette, with a medium carbonation.

An easy drinking and respectable red ale from a pretty tiny brewery in the middle of nowhere.

Shaker pint glass brought to my table a very clear, reddish-copper color with a fine-bubbled but fairly thin white foam. Not an overabundance of retention or lacing but the glass was served pretty full.

Sweet, candied yam-esque malts dominate the nose...almost like cotton candy and freshly pulled boardwalk taffey. Fresh and clean smelling, but definitely on the sweet side.

Sweet, malty and a bit one-dimensional. Still tastes fresh, but there is an imbalance to the beer that is not quite my style. Hops provide a late-finishing clean-ness, but for the most part this is a malt heads wet dream. Drinkable, but does not hold the interest very long. Toasty malt provides the only bitterness it seems.
