Pours a clear, dark brown color. 1/2 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of sweet malt, hops, hint of roasted malt, hint of wheat, and a hint of pale malt. Fits the style of an American Porter. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, hint of roasted malt, hops, slight yeast, hint of caramel malt, and a hint of wheat. Overall, good appearance, but wheat notes in aroma and body are unfavorable.

Started getting into their darker beers with this selection. This one poured a nice deep dark brown with a small off white head that faded quite quickly. Smell was sweet, lots of caramel and roasted coffee mixed in with a nice touch of earthy grains. The taste followed suit nicely, wth an almost smokey touch to it and a nice wel rounded sweetness. Overall this was a decent, albeit average ported. Nothing really stood out about it, but it was not bad in any way.

My second try at Downtown Grill & Brewery....

The Porter poured into the pint glass and produced a 1/4" head of tan color. The head didn't last too long and left minimal lacing.

The smell was of coffee and a woody-ness.

The first thing I noticed about the taste was the HOPS. Big on hops.... more than any other porter I have ever had. But I like hoppy beers. I would have preferred a bit more chocolate and malt sweetness though.... even their description pointed out a chocolate finish... but I couldn't taste it.

Mouthfeel was a little thin for a porter.

Overall, it is a decent beer.. not my favorite.... but good if you like hops.

Served on tap at the Downtown Brewery. Poured a pitch black with a tan head that leaves nice lacing and a ring around the top of the beer.

Aroma is a bit lacking. Mostly roasted grains and chocolate. Tempting but nothing out of the ordinary.

Nice flavor profile with some chocolate flavors and some burnt toast as well. Nice dark malts with little hop flavors. Some acrid flavors that are usually indicative of hard water and usually in the style anyway. Slightly metallic and chalky.

A nice beer with some nice roasted chocolate flavors. Medium to full bodied. Drinkability is nice. A bit heavy so one or two may do but certainly an enjoyable brew.

One of the weaker brews from The Downtown Brewery. The porter character showed up a little under malted, allowing the beer to fall short and a bit thin. The roastedness became a little chalky. The bitterness came predominantly from the charred grain and complimented by the hops. I would have liked to see a bit more chocolate tone and coffee notes. This along with a stronger malt base would have made for a fine porter. But, don't get me wrong. It's still pretty drinkable stuff.

The porter style has a long history in Knoxville, originally brewed by the New Knoxville Brewing Co in the late 1800's. This excellent original recipe was resurrected in the 90's by the 2nd incarnation of the company (now defunct). Moment of silence for the dearly departed. It's just a shame the 3rd NKBC is so wretched, it's definitely not worthy of the name. I'm happy to report there currently exist 2 very nice, locally brewed porters for my fellow lovers of the dark stuff (this one and Tuckaleechee Porter @ Calhoun's).
A: pours blacker than a CEO's heart with a much better head S: smoky sweetness with dark chocolate dominating the nose T: Strong, sweet overtones of hickory smoke, chocolate and roasted coffee excellent on the palate M: Viscous and hearty, a beer with some oomph D: A little heavy if you have several which I usually do. Final Verdict: Outstanding version, if only a local brewmaster(other than the current NKBC hack) could get the original New Knoxville Porter recipe.

I hadn't expected to find a full flavored, rich stout here. This was a beer that had texture, nothing thin about this one. I like the dark roasted, chocolately flavor in my stouts and this one met my hopes. When I get a fresh from the tap stout, I tend to watch the bubbles to see how they cascade down the side. This was a pleasure to watch, which prepared me for a beer to come back to. Good job.

The beer arrived at the table a translucent black with a persistent and foamy off-white head.

The aroma was chocolate and coffee with a very slight fruitiness.

The flavor was slightly sweet with restrained chocolate and coffee.

The finish was dry with chocolate/coffee into the aftertaste. The body was medium.

Nice beer!
