A: Poured a brown-cocoa amber, almost a deep gold. Bright cream head, nice retention

S: Smells of rye malt... Quite a bit of lingering spices... Quite a good nose... Deeper notes of chocolate and coffee tend to dominate.

T: Huge malt character blended with Rye is quite spot on. I have to say I'm impressed with this brew. Some dark fruit mixed in the finish also.

M: Light carbonation makes this beer so scrumptious and creamy. Full bodied and long on the finish but not unattractive. I likes

O: Quite a good winter ale, but it is winter and I tend to be bias during this season, but any who Bitter Root Brewing should be proud of this one.

a deep mahogany pour with 2 fingers fluffy off-white head. a fruity, malty overall smell with hints of grapes, chocolate, cinnamon, fig. taste is very fruity, almost like a barley wine. present are grapes, cherry, plum, chocolate malt, toasted oats, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon. medium bodied, creamy, mild carbonation, great lacing. a great winter warmer which was honestly great for this grey spring day. very flavorful and similar to a barley wine which happens to be right up my alley.

I don't think this was really ever retired.... just a nice hiatus between reviews. Picked this up tonight at Brewforia for $6.

Poured into my Old Guardian goblet... thin white head.. the brew is nice crystal clear amber.

Nose shows a surprising hoppiness for what is supposed to be an Old Ale style brew... but I am digging it.. A bit of pine and hints of grassy/spicy hoppiness with a fair amount of caramel and toffee.

Nutty and toasty... good malt backbone balanced by a good bitterness up front and a liberal hopping mid palate.. finishes pretty clean with a some nutty malt and background caramel essence.

Good medium body and carbonation. I have no real flaws with this one, I think it tastes damn fresh.

Poured from a standard pressure-cap bomber into a shaker pint glass in high elevation Libby, Mont. Reviewed live. No best-by date visible.

A- One-finger off-white head. Fluffy head. Decent retention. Mahogany-red color with decent clarity. Nice looking brew. Appealing.

S- Charcoal, roast malts and toffee. Caramel and walnut smells as well.

T- Roasty, smooth flavors. Some tobacco and coffee. Earthy and dark. Nice deep flavor.

M- Wet and well carbonated.

O- Above average. Nutty, roasty and surprisingly complex.

22 oz bomber courtesy of RWNewhouse, thanks Ryan! Pours a dark brown color with a huge, long lasting cap of tan head. Nice lacing.

Nose is full of piney hops and an interesting spice note...nutmeg and cinnamon I think, maybe some grains of paradise and cardamon. Interesting, but smells a little over-spiced.

Taste is much better and has a nice balance of roasty malt and dry spice flavors. Hops play a nice role all the way through. Has a very spruce-y flavor that is reminescent of Anchor OSA...maybe juniper? Unique beer that is very drinkable, I will have no problem finishing this bomber by myself. The mouthfeel is nice and lively and the beer finishes quite dry. I could definitely see myself bying a handful of bombers of this were I to find myself in the Treasure State.

Dark brown color. Medium head. Aroma is malty. A medium bodied strong ale. Malts are nutty, fruity and slightly sweet. Hops are mildly spicy. Very smooth. Bottle aging has appeared to improve this beer greatly. There is a nice complexity going on here as well. It’s very smooth, and has a nice sweet molasses, chocolate malty flavor. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

05/09/07- Had on tap at Bitter Root Brewing in Hamilton, MT.

Presentation- Fron the tap into two 4oz samplers.

Appearance- Medium brown in color, a touch murky. 1/2 inch head which dies fairly quickly. Leaves decent spotty lace behind.

Smell- Lacking much of anything. Maybe a tad bit of spices (nutmeg)? A few sporatic hops maybe with some toasted malt.

Taste- Good roasted malt base and is lightly hopped. A handful of spices...maybe some light cinnimon. No huge flavor, but what's there is fine.

Mouthfeel- Mid range carbonation with a light aftertaste.

Drinkability- Your run of the mill winter brew. Just OK here.

Old bottle. No date.

Pours a graham brown with some surface etchings of light tan foam. Smells of cinnamon, brown sugar and some oxidized malts. Tastes of dark, sweet malts, some rye cracker, some coffee grounds and a bit of cinnamon still. Medium bodied with low carb and an off dry finish. I kinda expected this to be infected or overly brutalized by oxygen, not the case. Decent enough
