Poured a 22oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a VERY dark red. So dark that I had to hold it up to the light to see that yes, it has some reddish to it. Foam goes away pretty quickly.

Smell: Definitely a cherry smell to it. A little bit of other sweetness, too, such as some caramel. Not an overpowering smell to it like some beers.

Taste: Yep, definitely tart cherries. Some bitter chocolate notes to it, but definitely a cherry beer. It doesn't taste like a "fake" cherry taste, though, so it works.

Mouthfeel: Hmm... this leaves a slightly sticky aftertaste in my mouth. Not so much syrupy per se but sticky. A little smoother would have been good for this.

Overall: Not bad, but I don't think I'll pick up another bottle of this. Not my favorite "My Turn," but it's not bad overall.

22 oz bottle poured into a Lakefront imperial pint.
5.8% ABV, 20 IBUs, 16°P, 40°L

A - In the glass the beer is dark but during the pour clarity is visible through the brew's ruby-hued chocolaty color. A plump khaki head forms loosely over the beer, dropping to a skim of foam below thick gobs of lace.

S - John's #007 release in Lakefront's My Turn series has a moisture-depriving dryness to the nose that gives the tart cherry skin a smell similar to cocoa-rubbed cherry pits on top of bakers chocolate.

T - John's shy malt base barely brings the aroma's cocoa or chocolate characteristics to the table, much less any other real malt flavor for that matter, as it's largely overwhelmed by fresh cherries and slightly tannic cherry skins. The cherry flavor is fantastic but there's very little else going on here, just no depth.

M - Crisp and clean, this dark lager with cherries nails the mouthfeel on the head. Roasted malts might not show up in the flavor of the beer but their accompanying dryness gives the feel great balance in conjunction with the cherry's tartness. Very smooth and exceptionally drinkable.

O - Let's not beat around the bush; John's My Turn series is essentially Eastside Dark with cherries. The cherry flavor is great! All-natural, no syrupy sweetness, nice flavor with a balancing tartness and cherry skin tannin but, the abundant cherry profile overshadows everything else which includes Eastside's classic and delicious malt profile. John's release is great. In fact, it's an extremely drinkable beer but, given the chance to do anything under the sun, John's My Turn series just feels like a Cherry Lager-heavy blend with Eastside Dark.

People will rate this low because they are unsure what the hell a dark lager is. This is a goddamn great beer and the cherry notes on it are fantastic. Best way I can describe it is like a black ale (it is a lager), but instead of hops, there are bright tart cherry flavors. I really did not know what to expect, but hell if I'm not loving the creamy black liquid with nice tart notes of cherry!

Pours dark brown with ruby highlights. A fluffy tan head thins and stays. Lacing sticks.

The smell is of dark grain with tart cherries.

The taste is of dark grain with a slight roast. Cherries add a pleasant tart character without tasting artificial or like cherry cough medicine. A hint of chocolate comes through from the malt. There is also a bready character that leans towards pumpernickel. Just a touch of noble hops to balance the sweettart in the finish. Well-balanced. Fairly complex for a lager.

It has a malty lager smoothness with ample, but not fizzy, carbonation. Crisp and refreshing. A mild tart flavor lingers.

A very interesting brew. Interesting and enjoyable. Wonderfully balanced. A nice unique spin on a dark lager. Nice cherry tartness.

Thanks John! And Lakefront! This was a pleasure!

Pours a huge, dense, brown head that has good persistence. Toasted malt aroma. Deep, dark, burnt umber. Starts with a nice, tart cherry flavor. Slight hoppy bitterness. Lightly toasted malt moves in over the cherries to make for a nice cherry pie like flavor.

This is quite nice. The Cherries are front and center, with the toasted malt in the background.
