Rendezvous pours a bright reddish color with a small lacing head. There is a oaky and sweet aroma, with wine like notes. The taste is the same, a nice wine like oak flavor, sweeter overall. Very nice body, great carbonation, love the feel, and stronger flavor. Overall its a nice beer, some nice flavors, a little too sweet.

$4.89 for a 22oz bottle @ Siciliano's. Brewed with 2-row, munich, Saaz and Mt. Hood. 7.2% ABV.

Pours out to a hazy dark amber, forming a creamy deep yellow head with very good retention and lacing. Carbonation is mild, ~2.0 carbs or so, much calmer than most Biere-de Garde. The nose is of caramel, butterscotch, dates and figs. Not very Biere de Garde, in other words. Doesn't have the spicy or peppery nose typical of the style. Fair amount of DMS and diacetyl, not appropriate to style. The mouthfeel is mild and soft with a medium body. The taste is a recap of the nose...lots of munich and caramel, figs, butterscotch, DMA and diacetyl. Bitterness is almost non-existent. Finish is sweet. Totally under-attenuated for the style. No hop flavor to speak of. In the finish is a little bit of peppery alcohol. No tartness, no spice.

This is not a Biere de Garde. Not even close. Imagine a really bad Vienna lager and this is it. This one is going down the drain. Total disappointment.

DATE TASTED: December 22, 2013... GLASSWARE: Maudite snifter...OCCASION: fantasy football championships on the line... APPEARANCE: dark reddish-brown glistening body; uneven white head; steady bubble with hazy smears of lacing--not unattractive... AROMA: bright, malty presence; yeasty bouquet--fresh and floral--decently balanced... PALATE: warming, unexpectedly creamy body; aftertaste affords more than the "fleeting experience" the label foretells--and the aftertaste is not one to hold on to...TASTE: a cinnamon, slightly medicinal/syrupy experience--surprisingly not what a bier de garde is supposed to be; astringent wine-like red blushes the pallet late; a struggle to chew, let alone enjoy ... OVERALL: bad bombers really disappoint, and though this beer kindles winter spirits with a firewater kind of fever, this truly resembles no b.d.g. I've had before...

22oz bomber purchased from Slowbeer and given to me for Christmas by Sam.

Pours a clear and rather vibrant amber colour, quite light and fluid. Head is a slightly bubbly ring, larger at the start, but ultimately just a minimal edging to the glass. Carbonation is fine. Looks decent enough, but not very exciting.

Nose is worty, a little sweet but savoury, and with a slightly brusque odour of BO. Some rustic spice and a touch of roastiness, weirdly. It's perhaps a little oxidised as well, giving a slightly flat papery character. Hmm.

Somewhat chewy grain character on the front, just a hint of spice. Slight sweetness as well, a little candy and caramel. Old lemon skin and a definite wet cardboard oxidised character. BB date is 05/14, but even now it's tasting a bit old. Feel is pretty smooth at least: it accentuates the caramel, which is a bit of a shame, but allows some of the aromatics to come through on the finish. Hints of melon and pepper, perhaps.

Overall, this is okay, but I don't think it's in its prime to begin with, and I'm not convinced it really has the chops to be good even when fresh. Still, it's nice to have tried it at least.

On-tap at Cafe Coquette in Milwaukee's Third Ward District:

Pours dark amber with a thin tan head. Some sliding lace sticks.

The smell is mild with some mustiness, some sour and a touch of caramel.

The taste is sour-ish and fruity - some lemon and apple. A touch of bitterness is in the finish. Alcohol is well-covered/integrated.

It is fairly creamy with a thick body. Could use a bit more carbonation to make it smoother.

A decent interpretation of a style that has a relatively wide range of interpretations. It paired well with the veal meatloaf I had ordered.

Pours copper in color with a white fizzy soda like head that disappears instantly. No bubbles coming from the etching in the glass and no head remains.

Smell has some lightly toasted malt notes, some light fruit esters are also present with some sweet caramel like malt.

Taste has some dry apple rind like fruity esters with some toasted malt and moderate sweetness over a mild spice like belgian funk. Alcohol is also present in the taste.

Mouthfeel has a medium body with high carbonation and a dry finish.

A- Murky brown with minimal head.

S- Enticing malt. Sweet with nothing to indicate this is a Belgian beer.

T- Malty sweet and nothing to balance it out. Clean without the usual funk and esters I expect from a Belgian style.

M- A bit syrupy and low on the carbonation.

O- I like a good malty Belgian ale but this one lacks the complexity to keep the sweetness below the cloying level.
